Agree @Scoham. I doubt the likes of Preston would even pay £500k for him in this window when they can get him for free in the summer

I expect something like £300k would be the most he would fetch in this window in light of his contract situation…which would make selling him even crazier vs keeping him & having a chance of promotion.
  • I don't think we would sell Small this window. The only potential upside is we could make sure we get a sell on but given he's only really performed well here it's a big risk. Am I right in thinking we'll get compensation if Small leaves this summer and signs somewhere else in England anyway?

Sadly I think Small will be gone soon. If there’s any truth in the Preston NE link and there’s money offered I can see that happening. If not I think he’ll walk in the summer. He’s been in no rush to sign a new deal and hasn’t really knuckled down or shown much loyalty wherever he’s been. He’s what ? 20 ? His next club will be his seventh I think.
He’ll be so difficult to replace in this window, and with 6 months on his contract we’re not going to get a huge offer. We’d be throwing away our chance of making the playoffs for what, £500k maybe?

We did similar with CBT last year, but we had a busy month reshaping the squad and the playoffs weren’t a possibility. This time we need 2/3 signings to help us keep up this recent form and improve a few weaker areas.

It would be ridiculous to let him go for the sake of a relatively low fee.
Do we get some compensation if he leaves in the summer? Even if it’s for nothing I’d still rather we kept him than took a fee now

Agree but I wonder if our SMT think £500k is such a small amount. I’d suspect we’d accept less.
  • Believe we’d get compensation due to his age, so any fee now is unlikely to be significantly more than we’d get in the summer.

  • I personally think Small loves being here and hasn’t settled anywhere before us. Hoping that works in our favour
He loves it so much he hasn’t signed a new deal that the club have been talking to him about for months.
Why would your agent not do everything he can to get you the best wage possible? Not necessarily guaranteed he’s off
The deal on the table now is probably a much better offer than a few months ago. Be silly to sign it now when if he keeps playing well that offer will keep having to go up

Well of course none of us know what’s on the table but the club will have a ceiling and given Smalls age, potential and performances now he’s back and fit I’d suspect we’re pretty keen on keeping him. Getting him nailed down for another two and half seasons would I suspect give us a very good return in 18 months when he could be worth much much more than the fee we’d get now. I don’t blame Small one bit for wanting as much as he can get from whomever btw.
  • Didn't realise Harry Cornick hasn't made a league appearance this season for Bristol City , would make a lot of sense as a loan signing although I'd have concerns about his lack of match sharpness

  • Jamal Blackman looks a very commanding keeper for Shrewsbury.

    From Croydon.
    And beats up women…no thanks

    Didn't know that.

    That's a no, then

Big mistake for Small if he doesn't renew IMO. First club he has settled in, has a great relationship with the fans and manager and is progressing week on week. Would hope he looks at the big picture and not the immediate attraction of playing in the league above.
    100%
  • I'd be buzzing with McGuane, one of the best players I saw against us last season, absolutely class.
Every one looked good against us last season.
January singings for us , are either cripples or should be claiming a pension. That is how it has been for the last 4 or 5 seasons.

Blackett-Taylor is a great example of sticking where you're happy rather than chasing the money.

Looks like he started to make a name for himself at Charlton, after a few bad decisions early in his career, now he's back to struggling for game time.

Wouldnt be surprised if the same misfortune befell Small if he decided to move on.

    Grass isn't always greener
No it isn’t and I agree that he’d benefit by hanging around with us for a couple more seasons but he’s moved around a lot for his age. Going to The Championship now would probably relegate him to being second choice. He’ll get there I’m sure but he needs a steady number of games on his CV. I’m not convinced his agent will see it that way.
