  • Are we expecting this midfielder to be confirmed today / before the weekend?
  • I am completely mystified by those on here who keep on saying we should be getting another keeper
NJ has woken up to the fact that AMB is better than both Isted ( completely useless) and now Mannion
The only weakness in his game is distribution but as a keeper who saves goals he is very good.
So long as the defence in front of him remains solid
he is a perfectly good keeper at this level and I would argue / Championship too - if we ever get there !!!!
He has improved, but depends on Jones in front of him rather than dominating the penalty area in the air.
  • Could be this new midfielder is Alan Campbell on a 5 year deal!
    Lets hope so
  • No clues on this midfielder then?
He's got two legs... or so I've heard, and he apparently likes playing Football
We can discount Jacko then, his legs have gone.

They went ages ago, maybe if we all had a look, we could find 'em again...🙄
You'll never make the stage mate.
    Sweeping it maybe...🤷‍♂️

  • I'd expect the midfielder to be signed and announced before the meeting tonight and then some hints from NJ and the SMT that " more deals are in the works"
  • More likely they’ll tell us a deal is close tonight rather than actually signing anyone.

That is not his only weakness. He doesn't come for crosses often, either.

Also, watch the highlights again. He has pulled off a few decent saves, granted. But when he saves, the ball ALWAYS stays in play. On a couple of occasions, the ball goes out into dangerous areas, and he is bailed out by a defender. He hardly ever deflects a shot out of play.
Another measure of how good he is, is that if we put him up for sale tomorrow, who would be in for him?

Realistically i doubt it would be championship sides and/or top league one teams. It would be league two sides and/or struggling league one teams.

Will allow Andy Scott to stay away.... as he is "trying to get a signing over the line" as we speak etc.

    What about Nicky Ajose
i was told by several of the previous SMT, he was the worst professional they had ever dealt with, so yep big yes.
I don't think I've ever seen a Charlton player in my 60 years of supporting the club put less effort in than him
    A total waste of space.
when we shipped him off on loan to Mansfield, we inserted a clause to stop a recall or them sending him back, after a couple of months they realised why!
Shame as he showed early promise. I remember watching a preseason video of the squad doing their bleep tests, out in the grass. After everyone had bailed out on the sunny day, the two left standing, or running, were Ajose and a total legend.
    The other.......?
    Kirk…..🤭
Gosh that's a nightmare for all addicts Kirk and Ajose in the same team

    Mystified :)
Apart from stays on his line, flaps on crosses and gets pushed around too easily on set pieces...

I think the criticism about AMB's faults should be aimed at the goal keeping coach, surely it is his job to improve the keepers.

To a certain extent yes but you can only work with what you are given. AMB could have years of personal tutelage from Buffon and it won't turn him into a Championship keeper.

Arguably he has actually improved from his first appearances but he's got a ceiling and that ceiling is top half of League One at best, honestly.

A coach can improve technically a players abilities, not his character.

If a player is bone idle, there's no way a coach can change that. (I am emphatically NOT saying that about AMB!)

The coming out to claim crosses, one of the important factors is bravery. Again, I'm not saying AMB is cowardly, but the number of broken noses/concussions he's suffered has probably dented his confidence.

One of our best all round 'keepers we've had in recent years was Ben Amos. Decent shot stopper, and, crucially, very brave. He came and claimed crosses when there were heads, boots, elbows flying around.

The effect of that was the defenders in front of him had much more confidence in him.

The result? There was a period when we had Inniss and Famwe in front of him when we went something like 9 hours without conceding a goal.

It was a shame he wanted to return back to his roots up North.
The amount of head injuries AMB has had doesn’t suggest bravery is an issue, he throws himself where he can get hurt.

I think that’s different to confidence to come and claim crosses, he’s never been that type of GK. Some naturally do it, and some GKs are 6 ft 5+ plus which makes it easier.
Yeah it’s definitely not bravery, it’s judgement and decision making which he can definitely improve. Where I think he probably can’t really improve much is his distribution

Again, though, it's not just height...

Who was the keeper we had last year that played in the LVPM Cup games? He was enormous! Even bigger than Miles, but hardly ever caught a cross. Always came and punched. (Usually feebly!)

I remember one game where he actually caught the ball, and the ironic cheers from the Charlton fans could be heard in Gillingham!
  • We definitely need a new keeper (for now). Ash is a top bloke as a person, but on the pitch he's lacking a few qualities I'd like to see from a Charlton keeper.

The main two qualities being the speed of his distribution, and his leadership. It's rare you hear him command the centre backs infront of him or encourage people to move up etc. It just sometimes looks like he will begrudgingly wave his arms.

I think he seems like quite a reserved bloke and I think as a top keeper, that's one thing you can't be. You need to think you're the bollocks a bit, and be willing to not be popular among colleagues. It's a loners role after all.

We need someone a bit older and who's a bit more assured like Baxter, or someone younger who can grow into that keeper like Sam Tickle.

I genuinely believe what Ash lacks can't be coached into him, he's got to figure that part out for himself.
January is not an easy month to sign a goalkeeper. Baxter is a possible but probably unlikely given Evatt’s sacking. Tickle is way out of our price range and wouldn’t come to us anyway. His next move will be much higher than us

We will definitely look to sign one this summer again, but I think it’s very unlikely we add one this month. Especially as we’d probably have to move on Mannion or AMB to do so

we still need a good keeper, good lcb and a good cam to push us into play off spot
Maybe long term we need a better gk & lcb but its not the priority this window for me. We've conceded less than Wycombe, Barnsley, Stockport, Reading & Bolton above us. We have the 6th best defence in the league in terms of goals conceded.
Is this because we are too defensive?
You could flip your comment and say goals scored is v poor because we are protecting and don't want to expose the weaker parts of our defensive unit.
Improving any position should be the priority every window then we can escape the years of mediocrity.

Definitely more likely to be this, if anything.

I don’t think a keeper will come in this window.
Mannion good in the air and commands the box and AWB is a good shot stopper.
Shame neither has a good all round game but don’t think a keeper will be seen as a priority .
