January Transfer Window (rumours + actuals)

  • No further movement as of last night on Jellis re Saddler
  • We bank with Barclays so the payments for the two players we want haven't gone thru.

    This is made up.
    Sounds like one of Ronnie's.
  • I do wonder if the players Jones wants are a little bit above the owners budget!
They themselves have probably come up with some slightly cheaper alternatives but Jones isn't having it.
Hence why in interviews recently he keeps saying we need to bring in those players with the right qualities.
He's not willing to accept the owners cheaper suggestions and is basically telling them they may as well keep their hands in their pockets and not bother signing anyone if they're not willing to bring in the ones he wants.

Let's see whether they concede. If we sign nobody, then my guess is they didnt
You can’t blame him, we’ve spent the whole window off loading the previous ‘cheap’ options. After the Ahadme debacle, he’s probably not listening to them anymore.

  • I can clear all this confusion up.

My dog, Gilbert, has just signed a 3 year contract and will be available for selection next weekend.
    Signed from Barking?
    Wolfsburg.

Given the lack of incomings, at this stage, I’m wondering if we are under a transfer embargo?
We’re so broken as a fanbase that not bringing in players is seen as a failure of the window.

I get that one or two would strengthen us further, but If we come out of it with all our best players still with us, then it’ll have been a decent window for us whether we bring anyone in or not. Especially with Jones signing a new contract and positive noises from Small regarding the same.

It’s so nice not to be hoping we bring in an entire new team to replace the dross we’ve got each window.
Yeah I suppose so, very true.

Anyway I’ve got to get going to Birmingham, in a minute,  I’ll see if I can persuade Alfie to come back.

Don’t get me wrong, if you persuade him, I’ll be very thankful to you 😂

    I disagree.

Holding on to our better players is a positive but as a club we need to be challenging for the play-offs at least.

After many seasons we are finally looking like we have a chance of top six but SO FAR we've not added to our squad.

I want more than "decent" or treading water in this division.

Maybe I'm unrealistic but I really think the play-offs can be achieved this year and extra quality signings give us a better chance of doing that.
Also, holding on to our better players is only really a result in itself (other than being generally a good thing) where there has been significant interest, with real money being discussed, in them from bigger/more successful clubs.

    Just my thoughts.

We have the chance to make the playoffs, if we can improve the squad now (to a level that can get and keep us up), as we all seem to think we should, that improves that chance, and also the chance of succeeding in gaining promotion.
  • I can feel the desperation creeping in to you all now
  • I can feel the desperation creeping in to you all now

  • I have to admit a few weeks ago I never thought we'd be on the cusp of the playoffs but we are and 3 positions are available to push for.

Not bringing anybody in would be criminal because with our injury record we need quality cover.

This is the worse league to get out of jyst ask Leeds fans what they thought of it.

Its interesting though that both us and Leeds have billionaire connections with the San Francisco 49's on their side but my Leeds mate is doing his nut in as they are top and need bodies to get them over the line and the only player they are looking at is a Southampton forward who's hardly played this season.

It seems both Leeds and our owners are all mouth and no wallets... Wasting a gilt edge opportunity to get to the championship now is crazy, screw this 'its a project bollox' take the bloody opportunity now.

    Frustrating is not the word.

One or two yes I agree they would of course.
But this club has been so devoid of continuity over the past ten years that it’s nice to be in a position where (one striker excepted) I’m happy for all our players to be here.

The point I’m making is that it’s not the end of the world if we don’t sign anyone compared to previous years where I would have been fearing relegation had we not brought anyone in.
  • People as soon as last week were still claiming we'd be "nowhere near" playoff contenders, but if he held on yesterday we'd be 6th with a game in hand on a couple of the chasing pack. If the squad as it is plays til the end of the season, we'd need to be very fortunate with injuries and form, in particular in midfield.

I can't see us bringing in no-one, however the real question will be when that signing occurs, how far down the list of preferred players will they be from?

agreed although i think they retain him as he provides a useful filter - anyone on his list will not be worth having so can instantly be discounted

Re  RC_CAFC's comment "We’re so broken as a fanbase that not bringing in players is seen as a failure of the window."

Not bringing in some additions to strengthen the squad in this transfer window WOULD be a failure.

I would remind you of Methven's words in the link below. We have trimmed the squad but the apparent additional objective is to bring in a couple of additions to strengthen so that at the end of the season they aren't looking back with regret at not having done so. He outlines the difficulties on doing business in January but, as others have pointed out, other L1 teams have done business in the first 30 odd days of this window. Now only time will tell if this has been good business and I also appreciate that sometimes there are chains involved impacting timing just like buying and selling a house. However, some clubs are willing to pay asking prices (and maybe over the odds) in order to have more control over their ability to bring good players in and to try to achieve their ambitions. We have also patently under-utilised the loan market this season compared to our competition, regardless of NJ's concerns that this blocks the pathway for home-grown talent.

I have said it several times on here, but I always prepare myself to be underwhelmed. It would be nice just for once to be pleasantly surprised.

Just wondering what his remit really is anymore if NJ is calling the shots on targets and I assume contracts are handled by Rodwell.

That's fair enough but in football and in this division you can't stand still.

Not getting promoted could well mean our better players leaving for richer, high ranked clubs and so we have to start over.

    Anyway, window hasn't closed yet

I don't disagree with your general point but I have to argue that a window with no signings would be considered overall a good thing.
If nothing happens, no movement in or out, before the end of the window then at the very best we're no worse off, though arguably more susceptible to injuries should we hit a rough patch. At worse we've actually weakened because we've lost what depth we ever had, minimal as it was.

However, "haven't actually got worse" isn't actually a good thing. It's honestly the absolute bare minimum we should be looking for, and even currently it's debatable if we have achieved it.

I've said before and still believe it could be much worse but honestly it really could and probably SHOULD be much better than basically just standing still.
  • It’s got nothing to do with the owners. Listen to Jones (Manager). The transfers are down to me alone. I have GREAT SUPPORT  from the owners. I will decide if players are good enough TO JOIN CHARLTON.

Currently sitting top of the Championship & having thrashed Swansea 7 nil yesterday I don't think Leeds fans have anything to complain about.
