Wrexham sell out ?

  • Of course, it could all just be window dressing to attract new investors. They probably haven’t bought many of those scarves, just enough say to put a few in the shop and some to hand out around the Board room, corporate boxes and lounges. This match will probably have a fair share of potential US investors attending and as much as Wrexham has done a pretty successful job it’s probably close to peaking because of where it is so a London based club has a lot of advantages. Giving them a ‘Wrexham’ scarf, the team they’ve probably come to see, with Charlton on it to wear and take away with the memory of a much bigger crowd and a ground closer to central London where their hotel is and the airports to take them home could be a ploy to grab their attention.
  • What happened to the working group for the club shop?
  • I don't think anyone is defending half and half scarves as a good idea per se.
But from my point of view having had cancer last year, it focuses your mind somewhat on what is important in your life and what isn't.

Half and half scarves are awful things, but it will take a lot more than that to embarrass me/upset me these days.

If it won't be important in 10 years time, then it's not important enough now for me to get wound up about.

I get what you are saying from a life perspective but I can guarantee you, we will still mention this on here in 2034

  • This feels like even more bad comms to me

Those that are embarrassed, who are you embarrassed in front of?
Millwall fans?  They can barely spell.
Palace?  They always have and always will be more cringe.
The rest of league one?  Who cares we don’t even wanna be here.
I don’t get what’s embarrassing about effectively transferring money from the pockets of fair weather fans and YouTubers to our beloved club, it’s called business.
  • Commend the effort?
Who the f suggested the idea- then even worse, the person who said ‘Yeah good idea’?!

  • Once again feeling out of sync with the CL hivemind... am just not bothered by the scarves... can see how many people are and I accept I must be an outlier. Obviously not interested in one for myself, but really don't care if somebody else wants one/wears one... hey ho...

Looking forward to a great atmosphere Saturday and hoping we smash them with a big statement victory.
I think it’s OTT but apart from that I couldn’t care less.

Seen this a few times now - the question of “why should we care what others think?”

Sorry, but I do care what others think. I’m proud to be a Charlton fan. I want to be proud of what we stand for, and no, I don’t want others fucking laughing at us.

Again, call us “customers” and we kick off about it - but try and use the opposition as a bait to get a load of money off of people that don’t give a toss about Charlton at the sake of our reputation - go ahead, crack on.
Well that’s fine, you’ve answered my question, you’re embarrassed and I’m not.

I don’t get how this is all “at the sake of our reputation” though, football sold its arse many decades ago, it’s a business and that’s not a debate it’s just reality.

The occasion and it proceedings have zero affect on my attitude towards the day, I’ll still chant, have a beer and have a laugh, its a classic Charlton fan meltdown, only this time we’ve started before a ball has been kicked!
  • Whilst it bothers me not one bit what others think, I accept that others don't feel the same. There is no right or wrong here. Both views allowed.

Isn't the guy who runs the "other" forum a Wrexham fan...just saying.

Interesting to see how the thread quickly went from “I can see why we’re leaning into the Wrexham thing” to “we are embarassing”

Surprised it took this to finally tip the scale considering practically every marketing ploy by the club has subtlety made Wrexham the true attraction of the occasion rather than our own club.
Mate I've been saying it from day one but there's plenty of wollys that want a "packed stadium". We're a small club in a suburb of London packed full of big teams. We are what we are people need to accept that. Yes we can pull a proper crowd at times and when we do there's no better place to be. My first game was in 95 so I missed the Selhurst and Upton Park days but my Dad, Uncle and Grandad were regulars then and followed us through everything so saw the low crowds and the shit times all the way through to a 27k sell out and beating the top teams in the Prem punching well above our wait. It's been installed in me what it is to be proud of this club and where we've been and stuff like this just makes me so angry. WE ARE CHARLTON ATHLETIC the club that came from.the brink to be a model club. Yeah we've fallen on hard times but I'm still here and so are many, many others. Fuck Wrexham and this mob trying to milk it dry. We were here before them we will be here when they're gone

CAST again get it wrong. No wonder they don’t have as many members as they should have.

Defending the club at every opportunity, including these terrible scarfs. Individuals who I imagine boast at dinner parties that they are on a committee of trustees!

    Disappointing.
In fairness I don’t think the tweet from CAST was defending the half and half scarfs, but rather attempting to bring some levity to the (slightly ott) backlash.

Of course, the board of CAST is democratically elected, so if you think they should have more members and make better decisions then you are very welcome to get up from behind the keyboard and stand for election next time?
Problem is when people are pissed off levity comes off as smugness and condescending.

Agree with your second point, although not all people have the time of course.
  • Can you imagine Millwall doing this ?

Admittedly ours is worse because it’s the official bloody club shop and not the dodgy street trader you’d expect this sort of rubbish from!!
