Interested to hear what Jones has got to say after that and how measured he can keep himself
Well if he loses his head he needs to take a look at himself. It’s common knowledge he is in charge of recruitment so they are his signings on the pitch executing his tactics
Midfield is the problem, plenty of graft but no guile. Passing defensive, dead ball and crossing absolutely dreadful. Look solid at the back, but need the midfield to relieve this constant pressure we appear to be under every game.
That was just bloody boring. We've lost any tempo, composure, even fight. We're very predictable and have been sussed out. Coventry is not a dead ball taker, Kanu looks off the pace, Godden was not really involved, but with little service you can't blame him. Changes are needed, Leaburn needs to come back and why not play Taylor? Sorry NJ I'm a huge supporter of yours, but the wheels have come off. Needs sorting before Tuesday. Enough said.
How did Jones and Scott sit there in the summer and decide not to address the complete lack of creativity in the side? Instead we seem to have a bunch of average midfielders that can't provide that killer pass to unlock a defence. I thought Jones was meant to bring front foot attacking football but we just look clueless.
All well and good having Leaburn to come back but he can't feed off scraps all season.
What worries me is we have one day on the training pitch before Bristol Rovers. That's a game we should win and has now become a must win. I'm expecting lots of changes to freshen things up but I don't think that's particularly helpful. Playing this 11 wouldn't be either of course...
No attacking pattern of play, absolutely shocking set plays, boring insipid football and now we have to add in the fact that we have a clear vulnerability on the break. It cost us a goal at Reading and has cost us the game today.
Started ok for 15-20 mins and went backwards from there.
None of the striking formations we have tried have worked. Absolute nonsense asking Godden to play through the middle on his own.
Midfield is pedestrian and so vanilla. They are all so similar. There is no pace, little to no guille and the less said about set piece delivery the better.
Wing backs are offering nothing going forward which is a huge issue. This formation relies on wing backs as your main creative outlet and none of them look likely to create anything at the moment.
Substitutions are either predictable or chaotic.
Jones is under pressure to get this right imo. Chopping and changing so much isn't helping, but my major concern is this far into the season and I still don't know what our attacking game plan is.
This "style" of football is going to struggle to win fans over and put bums on seats if we were winning. It's so shit to watch that it makes losing seem infinitely worse. I genuinely cannot imagine attending a live game anytime soon. If I am going to be bored out of my brain I might as well do it in the comfort of my own home.
The poor performances all season were at least bearable when we were picking up points.
If you design a team solely around the opposition making mistakes and not creating chances of your own, you are never going to win enough games to matter.
Feel like Jones will be starting to regret his summer transfer strategy. He brought in 'battlers' in every area and overcompensated for our defensive frailties. It's left the other side of the game neglected.
The lack of threat is obvious - we have one player who will turn and run at people. There's no pace, and nobody in midfield who can play on the half-turn. The two 'quality' players he did bring in (Berry & Godden) look like they can't affect a game over 90 minutes, possibly due to age. And we're still relying on some young players who aren't ready for a promotion push, or arguably regular L1 football.
It doesn't look like a formation or tactical issue, as he said last season re: our conceding goals, "It's personnel." I don't see a change to our attacking fortunes happening anytime soon, the issues have been there since pre-season.
To the game itself, we seem to have mastered two types of crossing:
1) Hitting the first man; and 2) Going over the head of everyone.
Stevenage were better at defending, attacking and their set pieces were miles beyond ours. We've surely seen enough now to have learnt that Coventry is not a decent set piece taker.
I'm also not sure the players will super motivated at the idea that the manager will be off should Cardiff make any kind of offer.
Not a good day today. The nagging part is - it's unclear where the improvement will come from.
Bored of seeing players like Dobson and May go with significantly inferior replacements.
Bored of seeing managers rolling the dice and playing players out of position
Looked like we'd solidified at the back which we have improved on from an awful defence last season but now have no creativity and pose very little threats.
Bored of relying on Aneke who can't play full games and can't start.
Bored of squads and signings being overrated and then looking nowhere near good enough to challenge in League One.
Another season of mid table nothingness it appears unless we sign so quality in January which never really seems to materialise.
If Jones alienated or didnt fight tooth and nail to keep May on side and on board thats looking a very silly decision in seeing the league's top scorer go whilst we are making goal scoring look a sparse affair.
And playing lloyd jones up front twice outside of an injury crisis suggests we're severely lacking options up top.
Grim.
Absolutely spot on Rodders. We've both said it before, but supporting this club is such a totally joyless experience. I really can't remember the last time I got any pleasure out of the curse I've been saddled with - Wembley probably. And the time before that ..... fuck knows.
Even when we win it's normally shit. But that performance today was so inept I really struggle to understand how we improve. 6 goals in 8 games is a shocking return - in League One ffs! - but we're not even going close
We played better football for the first 20 minutes but then reverted to type. So scrappy after that and we lost control. Stevenage by far the better team in the second half, a succession of corners and they effectively scored from one of ours!
Badly need Myles back as he offers something none of our other strikers do. Though even with him, looks like we're still going to struggle for goals with the lack of creativity, again in evidence today.
We'll continue to sneak the odd 1-0 result but we're also likely to lose plenty by similar scorelines, just like today.
Changed more than half the personnel and the result was exactly the same, turgid, rigid football with zero creativity and a lack of spark.
At what point does NJ decide it's not the players, it's the tactics he's got them playing, and when he does realise, will it be too late to change them for the better?
I will be surprised if we score more than 40 goals this season. Absolutely shocking performance from an attacking and creativity perspective. I did a virtual walkout on 80mins and switched off the stream. Saw nothing that gives me any comfort for the rest of the season. The Nathan Jones Honeymoon period is well and truly over as far as I’m concerned. Good night …
Six points off promotion and 6 points from relegation. Time to start looking over our shoulder?
The consequence of the brain dead decision to sell the league's top scorer and replace him with 'strikers'(I use the term loosely) who cannot control a simple pass and could not hit a cows arse with a banjo, is plain to see. As is the failure to have a decent attacking midfielder but instead to recruit ex Luton players who have seen better days. I love Charlton and the past 12 years have been very tough, but today I more or less stopped watching after 60 minutes as the result was predictable and the football terrible. Terrible football and shit results.
I know many on here think L1 is a poor league but recent results show it is not easy to get promoted out of. Blackpool and Stevenage probably wont be top 6 but they are hard to beat and we arent good enough. I think only 6 teams have scored fewer goals than us. Promotion is a long way off at present. I am still astonished that we accept a player in L1 can only play 20 minutes although he played 36 today I think - not that it made any difference. I am certain that past Charlton managers would not accept that level of fitness in one of their players. By next season he will be down to 15 mins perhaps.

Appalling again. Same every week. Absolutely zero strategy for attacking, the 3 games we’ve lost we’ve barely been able to raise an arm let alone a glove to our opponents, and even more worryingly the “plan” for attacking that Jones thinks he has is based around Ahadme who I think would look poor playing for Welling.
Trying to be objective looking for positives - I genuinely think we have the makings of a very good back 4-5 , goalie is good, Ramsay and Edwards are very good/ excellent full backs (sadly not excellent wing backs though) and we have great centre back options. It won’t solve everything but for a start, the formation is not working.
Recommendation for Jones : (Go west) in the open air (Go west) where the skies are blue (Go west) this is what you need to do (Go west) Let's see the back of you.
Ok, I'm off. Good luck guys, I'll see you in the post match thread
Where do you go at 3pm every Saturday?
Listening to the game or just following the match thread does not do wonders for my blood pressure, so if I'm having a good day I'll put the radio on and get on with a bit of housework, and if I'm having a bad day I'll go and have a nap. Sounds like it was definitely the right choice today. Hopefully the stream on Tuesday night will be better.
It’s all well and good saying “I don’t care how entertaining it is if it gets us promoted”. The problem is winning is unsustainable if it isn’t backed up by good performances. The truth is we haven’t played particularly well in any of our matches this season, except maybe the Bolton game and even then there was a lack of attacking quality. The start we got was great and obviously you hoped it’d prove to be the foundation for better performances but nothing has improved in our general play and the results are dipping down to match the performances, not the other way around.
Now we look like we might be stuck with mediocre results and absolutely shite football to watch while we slowly gather enough points to probably finish somewhere between 10th and 16th. I don’t know if I’ve got the stomach for it anymore.
I struggle to see why Terry T shouldn't get a run at Bristol after todays debacle and as much as people moan about Gas, he at least has held up the play up bit yet previously but yet again for the last few matches nothing creative has come from our wing backs who look superglued to their positionsand the midfield is simply awful.
I want to believe that Jones is the right fella but.... this squad is simply not good enough. Yes, we're all pinning our hopes on Dixon and Leaburn making an impact but if the midfield and wingback don't get the memo then nothing is going to change.
Looking at the last two Stevenage games they've only had one shot on target only... One freaking shot!! and we've just lost to these turnips?
A few more games like this and we're start thinking of bloody safety not play offs.
I've held off moaning about missing Alfie May but that decision ain't looking good.... He's not even getting on the pitch until the last 12 minutes.... What a waste... For us!
Anyway onto Bristol a place where dreams go to die.... Perhaps things will be different but I fear maybe something is wrong in the house and maybe this Cardiff talk is more serious than we think?
Brilliant support today and yet again poorly let down. These travelling fans deserve better.
Oh, and Campbell is a useful player and one of our few meaningful threats. Been used out of position as a forward and again today shoehorned into CM. The kids a winger.
Also, yeah Coventry's set pieces were awful today, but what does that say about the set-piece quality the rest of them possess?? He's a good player who does his job in active play, he doesn't need to be shown up like this. But there's no quality in the rest of the side
If the managers of Brum, Wrexham, Huddersfield or Rotherham were allowed to poach a couple of our players do you think they’d go for Coventry? I could be wrong, but I don’t think they would.
Ramsey or Jones maybe, but none of our midfield or strikers, sadly.

He needs to turn this around quick! Suddenly Bristol Rovers, Birmingham and Wrexham are looking like impossible tasks!
