We dwarf them in every aspect, yet the last 3 times I've been there, we haven't looked better on the pitch. Even when we beat them on pens in the carabao, they were the better team that night. No disrespect to Stevenage, as I'm sure they've got some nice fans and decent people associated with the club, but for a club of our size and the alleged money involved, to go there and look like the worse team, is well and truly unacceptable.
I'm looking at the players more than Jones. I've always had the belief that we don't have the right owners and management setup (generally speaking) in place. We obviously don't have much money, hence why we have tried to sell any decent player we have had in May, CBT and Dobson. I am still concerned about the people pulling the strings and what their aim is. Any of us can see that this football is getting us nowhere.
We go 1 down and you can pretty much guarantee we are getting a draw at best, it's abysmal. The only players I truly like the look of are Jones, Mitchell, Ramsay, Coventry and sometimes TC. The rest I'd happily see sold or loaned out. In some cases (Edwards & Dixon) I haven't seen enough to form a proper opinion.
Either way, I want the season over now. It's clear we got the transfer window wrong again, looks like we are gonna need another 2 or 3 (how many times has this been said), all that awaits is now is probably a mid-table ish finish and watching clubs we should dwarf, finish above us as usual.
It's a very depressing cycle. I've not lost hope in Jones just yet, but I am having doubts about my vote of confidence, and I am starting to think him and Luton are just a match made in heaven.
The football we play is no different to the likes of Slade, Adkins, Holden etc. Sideways crap passing, until we run out of options and start lumping it long. Then Chuks comes on and we hope he can pull a rabbit out the hat. Woeful.
Sold the best striker we've had since Yann to end the game with Lloyd Jones playing as a striker. Pass me the fkn cyanideIt is the worst football I have ever seen from Charlton, maybe since the Parkinson relegation season! As much as a wet weekend Appleton was, we tried to play football
There isn't a right or wrong way to play football.Jones style of football, need to win most weeks, and we are not.
Going off topic a bit but some view Guardiola's sides as great football, others view it as boring. Allardyce for example is criticised heavily for style of play, but they always had flare players and attacked when wanted too.
Its more about how you can adapt to other teams and the players you have available to play a certain way, that as I said is all subjective anyway.0 -

Utter fucking shit.
Boring football by players who simply arnt good enough. And a manager past his sell by date. One trick pony with one club, found out everywhere else he's been
It got 3 likes and no lols.
One person then replied basically disagreed/ridiculed you.0 -

Southbank said:Redmidland said:Having had a bit more time to reflect on the game and read this thread this morning, I understand why some (not many) want NJ gone, across the SM sites.
I agree the football we're playing is turgid and unattractive, with little to no end, our defence is much better this season. However we've lost creativity and hence goals. Midfield is, in the main, sedantry, Coventry the best of the midfield, but very poor dead ball delivery.
However do we really need to go on yet another managerial merry go round? Who would people suggest took the reins, surely not another journeyman?
We need to stick with NJ and see if he can turn it around. We've suffered 3 defeats all season (league) we're not shipping goals as we used to, so that seems better. NJ now needs to work on creativity in m/f, why not give Taylor a go?
Will Miles be used on Tuesday? Kanu isn't the answer, Ahadme is injured, Chuks is a bit part player, Godden isn't getting service.
Is Dixon worth a place on the bench, perhaps to use his supposed pace?
There's no point harking on about May and Dobbo going, it's happened, it ain't changing, so time to let it go.
I do believe we have a defensive foundation for the first time in years, it's all about creativity now.
NJ isn't stupid, he must see what is blindingly obvious. If, and I know it's an if, we can be in and around the playoffs by January, NJ will have to go to the board to freshen up midfield and attack. In the meantime he needs to, in my opinion, utilise Taylor, get Miles back and give Dixon a chance. Changing managers now is not the right option, we could be back to square one in weeks.1 -

If we got approx £1m for CBT & May combined, it would appear that Jones wasn't able to spend more than that?
In other words he was told his net budget was nil and he would have to sell to buy?
It's all very well saying Jones got the players he wanted, but would it be more accurate to say Jones got the players he wanted with a transfer budget of zero?

My guess is you are right CBT and AM subsidised our transfer budget with the owners putting in small amounts2 -
golfaddick said:AndyG said:I’m very concerned after that performance yesterday. I hate the style of play but if it brings results ( ala early season results) then I can live with it but playing like that and losing is not acceptable I would rather watch Garnerball tbh
And now everyone is seeing it for themselves. Teams can always scrape a few 1-0 wins but that wont last long. Long term a decent top 6 side will win well, not win ugly. 8 games in & we've hit the net 7 times....with only one game having scored more than once.
I've said it before & I'll say it again. I'd rather lose 3-2 than win 1-0 as it shows you can score goals, and a good team will overcome the odd defensive lapse & overpower poor teams.
The manner in how you win is so important. I would say the first 4 games this season were an outlier & we have now reverted to type.
The football mantra says that the sign of a good team is one which plays badly, and still wins. BUT that assumes that in between the ground out ugly wins you actually have some good performances as well, to show that the poor performances are an off day, rather than the norm...

I had a lovely weekend off from thinking about Charlton after that match. Well, the men's team anyway. Unfortunately now it's Monday and I've been at work for 8 minutes and thinking about Charlton has become preferable again. We aren't very good. We don't play very nice football. When that happens you get a lot less leeway once the results slip. Add to that deciding you don't want the previous season's top scorer and fan's favourite and you're forcing yourself to play on hard mode in terms of fan support. Jones said we should assess ourselves after 10 games, and his teams do tend to take a little bit of time to get going, but we look worse than at the start. The hope is you go from grinding out results to winning them with a bit more verve but we've stopped the grinding out part.
The thing I was most alarmed by was Jones' post match interview where he said we'd tried to move away from the hardcore keep a clean sheet mentality to play a bit more expansively, but all that has led to is the same level of on the ball performance and no clean sheets. Deeply troubling to think that this is us trying to play a bit more. Jones has tried to change a few things now and it hasn't made a huge difference. I never like a 343 but there was acknowledgement there that getting the most out of TC and punishing Docherty for his performances so far, which on the face of it was good. It didn't work though, and the fact is we shouldn't need to fundamentally change how we play, we need to get more out of the players we have. The midfielders we brought in need to do more and that's hopefully something Jones will beat out of them. We talk about creative midfielders a lot but being able to move the ball into midfield and have it go to another Charlton player consistently so we can build shouldn't be the sole domain of genius 10s, it should be something all our players can do. The next two games will make it 10 games in. Bristol Rovers have been awful so far and appear to be getting worse, while Birmingham look unstoppable. Get 4-6 points from those and look a bit more like a team that can play and we'll hit the 10 game mark looking a bit happier and on target for points. Gouge away miserably against Rovers and get pumped by Birmingham though and we will need a big rethink.
I do think it's interesting what's happening with some teams this year so far. There were some pretty big managerial appointments with Michael Duff (who I honestly wanted ahead of Jones) going to Huddersfield and Evans going to Rotherham. Rotherham brought in 6000 players early on and Huddersfield looked to have invested well but they're clinging on. Rotherham have won once and sit 19th, Huddersfield started well but have lost 6 of their last 7, weirdly becoming Rotherham's only win so far. Meanwhile the old war dogs Parky and Bruce are marching up the table. The managers who are supposed to piss it are really struggling this season and it'll be interesting to see what does or doesn't change there.6 -
NJ has done a great job on our defence. The glaring weakness last season.
Now he must do the same job with our mid-field. Once he gets that right, proper service to the strikers should result in more shots and more goals. Mid-field support for the strikers has been missing big time this season.
And why all the changes every week lately? We were winning games at the start of the season with a virtually settled 11.1 -

As much as a wet weekend Appleton was, we tried to play football..
It isn't the first time he has told a white lie to protect the higher ups in the club, it won't be the last:

It was common knowledge that Dobson was heavily linked with the Hungarian club, but he lied almost immediately before he'd even set foot in the club properly. This is the nature of football.
The football is awful, but it's no different from his predecessors. The difference being, he has proven he can get results, even at a higher level unlike most of the managers we have had.
I just think he needs time and a few transfer windows with some actual cash to secure quality, not chump change.
Got a few solid players with Coventry, Jones, Mitchell, Ramsay etc. Tie them down to better contracts, build slowly. That's the solution. His hands are tied right now imo, he just won't say it for obvious reasons.
If you offered me for the season to end now, mid-table finish, keep Jones and all the players I've mentioned, all the dross out of the club, with more freedom in the transfer market, I'd snap your hand off. This is going to be a slow and ugly process, unless we get cash strapped owners.Godden
Berry
Edwards
Campbell
Gass
Mitchell
Potts
are all players that Jones wanted, he got them. He wanted total control, he got that. So far he hasn’t delivered. He promised attacking and direct football, we haven’t got that.
So he has an eleven effectively chosen by him, supplemented by decent kids plus squad players and Aneke, but cant get a tune out of them. He needs to take a look in the mirror and analyse his mistakes. We are a big budget side and shouldn't be in the one goal result business. It was his choice as was the decision not to get in loan wild cards.
We can only hope something clicks or Leaburn/Dixon can drag us out of the mire.0 -

Jones made panic subs when we went down against Reading, and since then we've seen a load of chopping and changing and one win in five. Incidentally the game we did win was the one where he reverted to the preferred XI from the start of the season.
Don't know if it's the best strategy to just randomly swap midfielders in and out of the team until it somehow clicks.1
