Charlton players that were a little bit crap/weren't with us for long but you like them anyways....

Lawrie Wilson is the obvious one. Even had a song about being naff but he turned it around with his brace against Brighton in Dec 2013 and that transformed him in the eyes of supporters, and he had a good run with us in the end. Seems like an all-round great bloke too. 



My personal favourite is Alou Diarra. Played in the World Cup final for France in 2006 and somehow ended up with us in 2015. I thought he was a class above our other defenders (in an admittedly poor team in 2015/16), and that goal against the spanners in 2015 was a great moment. Just a shame we couldn't hold on to the lead, or he might have gone down in legend. Left us in a slightly odd way, it appeared he was planning to retire only to sign for Nancy.

My regret with Diarra is we were so crap at the time we weren't able to play him in midfield all the time. I know he was older but he could have still dictated a game if he'd had better players around him, but unfortunately we needed him a centre back. One of those players I can't believe played for us.

I loved Martin Pringle. I was about 8 years old when he signed for us and you got a lot less coverage of football back then, so if you'd asked me I would have told you Charlton had unearthed a genius. I think he scored 3 goals in his first 6 games and that was enough for me to be convinced he was a god. He scored...fewer after that and I was surprised when I first started coming on here to see he wasn't viewed particularly positively. It made me take the regrettable step of looking at his stats but 8 year old me is still at the wheel on that one I'm afraid. Pringle was great. 

I've also got a lot of time for Rob Hulse who I think was a hugely significant part of us getting enough form together to not get cut adrift in our first Championship season under Powell. Got called a donkey plenty on here at the time but him coming into the team coincided with us losing 1 game in 10 and meant we actually had someone to be on the pitch while Yann, Fuller and Haynes traded off injuries with each other. He wasn't a brilliant player but he worked his arse off, held the ball up and made us a more difficult team to play against. Before that Cardiff game we were in serious trouble and worrying for Powell's future, but by the end of his loan we were looking alright again.

Tony Watt first player I thought of, even though he had some sublime moments in a Charlton shirt (I doubt any of us will forget that keeping the ball for a minute moment at The Valley), but overall he didn't perform to the level he should have, and I guess he only scored 7 or 8 goals for us in total.

I was seeing a girl from Prestatyn when we signed him and made her go to a game at Rhyl (where he started his career) with me to see if I could buy an old programme from a game he'd played in. 

Got chatting to the guy in the programme shop who was very excited that Andy had signed for us, the fans loved him. Ended up having a beer with a load of fans that the guy introduced me to.

Yoni Buyens was only here for a season but was very good for that brief while and has to be statistically one of the most effective penalty takers we've ever had.

Souleymane Diawara - described by Richard Murray, with more than a hint of a sneer, as “apparently the best centre half in the world you’ve never heard of” after he’d paid £3.7m for him.

Never thought he was given much of a chance to settle and only played 26 games (although that included 8 clean sheets). Went back to France, we made a loss, and went on to be transferred to Marseille for €7m two years later. Won the French cup 4 times, a record at the time.

Just checked the video, closer to three minutes (although the ref would have had added some time back on), and got two of their players booked.

Going back a while to when I was 15, I remember being in awe of Martin Pringle, and being very excited whenever he played, and confused when fans around me and my dad were shouting bad remarks about him. 

Watching clips back over the years, obviously he was not the great footballer I thought at the time, although he's probably in the cult hero category.

Lawrie Wilson played 96 games for CAFC so not sure he qualifies but a really likeable guy who when my son and I met him in Spain lived up too what I had been told about his upbeat personality.
I never missed a home game back then and I still remember when he got a brace at the valley when played up front.

Came on as a sub about 10 mins after half time replacing the injured Patrick Viera.

I thought he had his moments, and certainly tried hard. Great name too.

The frustrating thing about that first full "Roland" season is that we actually had some decent players. Gudmundsson, Watt, Vetokele, Buyens. 

Bulot was another player who came good in the second half, and Chris Eagles did a job for us too.

Can second what a lovely bloke he was. In his first season with us, I was doing most away games, and while most players were friendly, it was Wilson and JJ who were always happy to sit down in the hotel lobby/bar and have a longer chat with fans.

I thought he had his moments, and certainly tried hard. Great name too.

Players like Best and Marcus Tudgay (had to look up the Sheff Utd FA Cup game to remember his name) blend into one for me. I’m sure there’s a few other strikers we had on short term deals like this. Ricardo Vaz Te was another.

I saw him play for Wednesday v Birmingham and he had a fantastic game, the Wednesday fans were concerned how long they were going to keep him. 

I was really pleased when we bought him but sadly it did not work out.

Didn’t pull up any trees but liked him. Can’t remember the game but remember him coming on as second half sub and scored the winner with a header, I think shortly after entering the field of play.

Naff player.. Salim Kerkar for me, thought the bloke was brilliant to watch.. you never had a clue what he was going to do next and neither did he! 

Not with us for long, Francis Coquelin was a cut above anything we've had in recent history during his short stay with us.

Ricardo Fuller, a genuinely talismanic striker in his prime. He came back to us right at the end of his career when his knees (I think) were shot but he was still a beast of a centre forward when fit enough to play. The serious injury he suffered when he trialed for us as a youngster was a sliding doors moment for the club.
