John Barnes. Obviously a great player in his prime but well past it when he joined us. Half the people around me groaned when he got brought on as a sub but I thought he looked like the best player on the pitch. Couldn't or wouldn't run but his ball retention and probing was quality.

Brendan O’Connell. One full season 1996/1997

Workman like midfielder who would probably in this day would suit our midfield under Nathan Jones
You had to watch him closely to
     appreciate his work ethic.
This is true of me as well

I would say his performance away at West Ham in our 1-0 win in 1999 was one of the best individual performance I have seen by a Charlton player and he barely left the centre circle.
  • Think the Diarra shout is harsh, thought he was very good at CB for us.
It's players that were a little bit crap OR weren't with us long.
  • Going back a bit to when I started going but Graham Moore, my dad hated him with a vengeance, used to call him granny Moore due to his complete absence of running! For me it was probably Ralph Milne can't ever remember him having a good game for us!

I presumed that it was players that were a little crap, and weren't with us for as long as we'd hoped.

Like Covered_End_Lad, there have been some names appearing that have really confused me on here as a result
  • Linvoy Primus was a strange one.
Only played 4 games for us and I think I’m right in saying he got ‘man of the match’ in his first appearance.
Thought he was going to be something special but just unaccountably disappeared from first team duties.
Went on to make a very successful career elsewhere and played for several clubs, notably over 200 games for Pompey.
Never been able to understand why he left us when doing so well………any ideas?

Gritt and Curbs let him go, as we were well stocked in that area. Chapple, Balmer, McLeary, Brown with Rufus coming through.

I too was surprised that we let him go though.

I wasn't sure if he meant first or second time around. Second time around, he was average in an average side. A bit of googling suggests he only played for us once in 94 ina 1-3 loss to Newcastle.

Old spongefoots goal against Blackburn and interview after lives long in the memory 😂

Another vote from me, quite liked him workhorse who could surprise you at times.

Did he bag an assist for Jacko by Cruyff turning on the line and putting the ball across the box? Or was that a lucid dream...

a man in a suit and tie is making a face
  • Greg Shields. Unfortunately got injured  but thought he was an excellent player who sadly didn’t have a long career at the club. Had a chat with him at the service  station Coventry away in the cup. Seemed like a decent fella.

He played his games for us in his first spell in 1992 and it was not just one game
  • Oztumer had one of the best 45 minutes I've ever seen from a Charlton player, I can't remember who against though.

He was a bit crap for the rest of his time at Charlton but I'll always fondly remember that 45 mins where every flick, trick and turn was perfect. He was actually the Turkish Messi for that half.

    Yassin Moutaouakil

    Purely because of his name.

    He signed
    He came
    We can't pronounce his name
    Yassin Mouta...........
I thought he was brilliant when he first joined. Then got injured (Stoke away?) and never looked the same player.

Would that be an early season night game against Forest?

We battered them first half and led 1-0 at half time but should have been more.

Second half more even, they equalised late, Adoma, and we were hanging on at the end.
Sounds like a good description of the game so I think you are right.
  • I always quite liked Therry Racon, even though he never really hit the heights. Frederic Bulot too - took a while to get going, then burnt brightly for a brief period, then was gone.

Frederic Bulot had a good Africans Nations with Gabon and came back a more confident player.

I remember one game at the Valley when Antonio scored when both Harriet and Wilson failed to deal with him and he ran from the half way line and scored a worldy.
In the 2nd half Gomez with the help of Bulot marked Antonio out the game and CAFC won the game.

    Churchinho

This was who I thought of. Sure, I wish he'd have put his foot through the ball sometimes, or even just once, but I always felt that he tried hard.
I actually liked Church as well, never really understood why he got quite so much hatred. Part of his problem was that Spongefoot is actually quite a funny nickname and it encouraged a bit more of a pile-on but I can think of a lot more good Church moments than I can a fair few other players. We were absolutely penniless when he played for us, putting out teams in 2014 that barely had any new players from what we had in 2012 and he really was the best we could get based on what we could afford, but he popped up with some important goals when we needed him to. Worth remembering as well that he was brought in as a backup striker for a front two of Yann and Sordell, but for reasons we now understand Sordell wasn't at it and Church was needed to play a lot more than he ever should have. I remember an equaliser against Barnsley when we'd been 2-0 down, the winner against Blackburn, the winner in a 3-2 against Reading, a goal in the rearranged Doncaster match when we were absolutely desperate for a win and the winners against Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday to get us to an FA Cup Quarter Final. For a player who was a proper check for change down the back of the sofa and see what we can get with it signing that's not a bad set of moments.
  • Can't believe he hasn't been mentioned yet I don't think, but maybe he's just too obvious - Jorge Costa!
  • Vetokele was injured early and ruined him, thought he could've been premier league standard

Had a soft spot for that striker whose name I can't remember, missed the sitter against Millwall and stuffed his confidence. Was a workhorse and I always root for that kind of striker.

Vetekele was excellent, but got injured and made to play on, on an injury. There was no decent back up striker(s) that allowed him to be rested. Took a look time to get over the injury, never recovered his form after that.

Tucudean. Had one game where he was like a compact Yann and then nothing

I remember Oztzumer running rings around Sheff Weds. Sheff Weds strategy was to kick him off the pitch. Referee booked the offending players but ducked a second yellow that would have sent the player off and stopped the tactic. Otzumer was injured and made a mistake that allowed Sheff Weds to score. It was a draw or 2-1 win for them. Referree gave no protection. Typical of Sheff Weds, if they could get away with kicking another team or player of the pitch, they would. Don't remember if Otzumer made much of an impact after that. When on song, was good to watch.

Tucudean scored a couple, but I think it was him that missed a clear chance against Millwall. After that, his time at Charlton was up. Scored that and that gives him time.

    Ran the show against Derby.

Premier League goalkeeper with a howler for us as well.

He had a few good games. His goal against Bolton is my shout for most underrated Charlton goal of the past decade
