Wedding speech

I'm getting married this Saturday, and have to do a speech, last time I did a speech was in school when I had to read a passage from Hamlet. It went terribly my heart was racing, sweating and my bottom lip started doing the macarena.

Literally all I can think about. Anyone got any tips? Dr has recommended beta blockers has anyone tried these?

Get someone to read it for you.
I never did a speech at my wedding I was too terrified (or just stand up and say thank you very much for coming).

"To be or not to be...that is the question"...good luck mate, hope all goes well...🤞
  • Go first, keep it brief, breathe, slow every word down. Just say the thank you’s and do not forget to tell the bride she looks fabulous, and other than being a Charlton fan, you can’t believe how lucky you are!

Far more pressure on the best man. Good luck Ad.
  • Apparently you just have to imagine your mother in law is naked and it’ll go swimmingly 👍🏼
  • Take deep and deliberate breaths before you start.
    Don't rush things.
  • Congratulations

  • Just be yourself. Start off with all the easier stuff and you should relax being just you. Have a crib sheet of the main things to include or read the speech verbatim. Remember you are amongst family and friends who love you and are rooting for you. Practicing a few times can help
Or what about recording some or all of it beforehand?
  • My advice is,

Try not to let the thought of the speech ruin your day.

Don’t drink to much before hand, it might relax you to much.

Always remember that every one in the room loves and knows you, and will all be willing you to do well, and will accept any mishap with humour and grace.

I hope your day goes well and wish you a lifetime of happiness.

    All the best.

And good luck; have a wonderful day!
  • How about starting with a toast, then maybe a few more, then telling them you're intention is to get them all pissed so they don't notice that you've shit your pants!!

When I did my best man speech, I cut the speech into segments and put them onto cards. It forced me to take my time, not rush and speak at a comfortable pace. It also makes it easier to learn so you’re not always looking down when you speak. Don’t try to be too funny (although the groom speech isn’t really meant too).

  • My advice: Don't take beta blockers! I'm assuming you don't have serious heart problems. A moderate amount of alcohol will relax you better than beta blockers.

Don't say something along the lines of: "This is one of the happiest days of my life! It's right up there with the 1998 and 2019 playoff finals!".

Google "advice on a groom's wedding speech". Prepare your speech well in advance and practice in front of a mirror.

    Congratulations and good luck!
  • Rack up a massive line 5 minutes before the speech is due. You’ll be fine.
He’ll likely talk a load of bollox……but will think he’s doing great and into the bargain not give a fuck.
    So it’s a win win.🥹
  • The grooms speech is easy. You don’t have to be funny. You just have to say the bride looks fantastic, thank both sets of parents, tell everyone to enjoy themselves and that you have been told to wrap the speech up quickly as the best man’s speech is long and funny
  • Congratulations on your great news, Ad. Just remember that everyone there is on your side. They'll want it to go well for you and will be supportive. Enjoy your moment in the limelight, but remember no one really expects great entertainment from the groom, as someone said above, the best man is the one who's under pressure to perform.
  • Phew, glad this is just an advert on this thread and not our fabulous CL advice!  (It's £4.11 btw)

Best wishes and good luck for Saturday!

That's a big presumption... Especially if the Brides parents aren't massive fans of him, and one of the Bridesmaids is batting for the other side, meaning she's secretly jealous that its not her running off with the bride herself - Ooo gotta love a bit of spicy drama at these events!!
  • Congrats.

I’ve done all three ‘major’ speeches at weddings and groom is relatively easy.  As others have said, no need for stories, thank everyone, make sure you reference “my wife”, and keep if short and snappy.

For delivery, I’ve also done a few presentations to 100’s of people - personally I couldn’t do the naked thing, I always either look over everyone’s head or try and defocus my eyes so I don’t ‘see’ individuals

Bottom line.  Everything will be fine.  Enjoy

(we’ve just celebrated 30th anniversary - hope you do as well 😀)
