Seasons when Charlton have been top of the league

I'm trying to recall times when I've seen Charlton play a game as the current league leader of their division - perhaps, even after two or three games. I saw several games in the SCP season, but how many other seasons have been at the top of the table, even if it is for one or two games? I actually need the info for a book I am writing, so a credit can be offered to anyone with good info. The book isn't about Charlton, but I will be lamenting the fact that I have seen Charlton play in the relegation places more than the promotion places.

Clearly, 1998/99, 2000/01, 1980/81, 1968/69, off the top of my head. I think 1992/93. We just have been top or second in 2009/10 as I recall we won the first six matches?

We were top for about 5 minutes on Saturday… between Mansfield going one nil up on 22 mins and Wrexham going one nil up on 28 mins…
  • 1992/1993
    1993/1994

Yes, I noticed that. I'm not sure that counts. I don't like this modern thing of league tables reflecting the position if the games all stopped at that moment.
  • Was it first game of the season in top flight we beat Southampton 5-0 or something to go top of the league? 88/89?

    1998/99 haha

It was the second game after a 0-0 draw at Newcastle but yes we were top.

If you saw the Southampton game then at the final whistle we were top of the league as they walked off the pitch.
True but I didn’t see Newcastle take us on as league leaders.

  • Was the Newcastle game not first and the Southampton game the following weekend?

Yeah my post may have been confusing we went top after beating Southampton 5-0 in the second match of the season.

    Ah. I’d forgotten that!
  • So, we must have been top with 4 points and 5-0 goal difference - is that right?
    but for how long?

Yes Parky’s team with JonJo Shelvey flourishing and winning the first six was what I was thinking about on Saturday. Before the game, anyway…
  • 1974/75 ? Must have been top at some point.

We then got a 0 0 draw at Highbury which was a fantastic result but I presume one of the other teams on four points won that day so we lost top spot.

I certainly belted out "we are top o' the league" as I staggered sozzled round Highbury. Happy days.

Lloyd Sam had an absolute belter at Tranmere as I recall.
  • If memory serves me right we topped the table early in 1968/69
After losing first game of season to Scumwall we then went the next 9 games undefeated
  • Well clearly the 1999/2000 season where we were top for ages. Same again for the SCP points record season, although that was more towards the end of the season whereas 99/00 was more Feb/March time and then in good old CAFC fashion we fell over the line.

The club shop even produced t-shirts, I kid you not.
  • I don't recall us ever being top in the 74/75 season someone mentioned above.

If we were it would have been early on after say Peacock's headed winner at the Gills.

I agree we were never top.
  • Remember being at West Brom and winning 2-0, think Murphy scored both... we were definitely top of the league at half time as we were going mental! Maybe joint top with Chelsea as stated earlier tho?
  • Think we went top after the 6-2 Southampton game, was on a Friday night.
  • If we ever went ahead first game of the season before anyone else did, we’d have been top.

I know it doesn't count but we were 2 up after 5 minutes in a season opener v Grimsby at Upton Park, so 1991 or 1992
  • We were top of the league for an hour or so this season after we beat Orient in the early kick-off
  • 22nd August 1992 after beating West Ham at Upton Park we were away and Pardew scored in a 1-0 win

    we were top after that
