That was a good performance especially second half, hard to read too much into pre season games but that certainly made it a touch easier to see May scoring twice for Birmingham against WBA at the same time
Bloody hell, we just had to bring Alfie May into the discussion...enough already...🤦♂️
Sorry. I’d get used to it though!
No I won't!!...you can if you want, but it's all getting rather tedious and boring already... There's an Alfie May thread already, why include it in our Match Threads as well...
Very impressed today i think thats about the most dominant and controlled we have been for a solid 90 mins that i have possibly ever seen
pompey really werent at it but some of our passing and pressing looked unreal
dont want to get too excited but from Mannion who looked so calm and composed in goal all the way through the team literally everyone played well and impressed
Not a bad game & better than I'd hoped. Back 5 looked tidy & as if they'd played a couple of seasons together. Ramsey probably MOTM and should have the RWB place nailed down. On the left I'd probably have to go with Small but Edwards is great in to the tackle. TC has shown he has goals in him but critical of the one he hit miles over the bar. Ahadme is a handful but (going to be controversial here) I'd like to see Godden up there to start with.
Coventry looked better than last season but still doesnt do enough for me......although his free kicks will cause problems to defences. Anderson & Docherty were busy but I still think we don't have enough goals in the team to have them both playing together.
Anyway......the real test is next week. Will watch it on Sky & hopefully we will get a point or 3 on the board.

sorry, I don’t follow all the threads. He’s not going away, playing for a direct rival so unless he is injured, we’re at the opposite end of the table or, here’s hoping, we’re romping it at the top banging goals left right and centre, it’s going to be hard to get him out of our eye line 🤷🏼♂️

the thread is about today's match (the clue is in the headline) not a couple of future fixtures where today's defence will hopefully stop him scoring.
Soon as the starting eleven was posted I had a surge of optimism. That's a rarity. That starting 11 is what I want to start at Wigan. Given a possible new keeper, also, Edwards played very well but Small is more of a handful attacking. Glad Anderson is in contention.
That was the best I've seen Coventry play, but he could be so much better by finding a forward pass instead of his 'go to' sideways or backwards pass. Our play was noticeably quicker/more incisive in second half. Bring on Wigan.

Ok...different angles... I know he's not going away, he never will with him popping up on Match Threads,...let's just leave it there and hope we have a great season...
HMS Piss the League is ready to set sail but all the cabins are full and there’s not enough room for all the planned passengers. Departure has been delayed until a few passengers can be persuaded to board another vessel.

Why not ? I'm still pissed off that we gave Yann away, should never have got rid of Alfie.
Interesting that all our fringe kids, Campbell, Kanu, Mitchell and even Anderson (who has been on extended international duty) have massively improved physically, while wasters like Fraser barely break sweat.
He might work hard, he might be a battering ram & he might be an important cog in our team but I don't think he'll get anything like 20+ goals
Well his latest record in the league was 11 in 29 so taking that as a barometer he could very well be up around the 20 goal mark give or take.
Obviously a lot of assumptions made there and my personal guess is he'll finish on somewhere between 15 and 20 but that's not awful depending on whether we actually do get more of these mostly hypothetical "goals across the team" or not.
Went today with hope rather than any great expectations and was impressed by the teams effort, determination and the football got better and better until the multiple substitutions disrupted the play.
Could see a real team spirit, strength and pace throughout the team and Nathan bouncing on the sidelines and screaming instructions. Good luck to NJ in picking his team for Wigan away as lots of players put in strong performances today.
Here’s hoping this can be the benchmark for the coming season - COYR
What I liked about today, was we looked difficult to beat, compared to last year when we were a real soft touch!
I’m not sure if we’ll be top 6, but we won’t be the walkovers we were last season!
Last season I thought we were so soft as a team but I definitely think that won’t be an issue any longer. There’s much more of a presence about us it seems and let’s hope it leads to more success.

Yes he could do & I hope he proves me wrong because it would push us towards a more successful season than I actually think we'll have. I didn't see todays game but it's great that most people's opinion is that we're looking good. Problem is we need to have that consistency.......... time will tell

We're all unhappy about it, and agree regarding Yann, nothing wrong with any of that, but not on Match Threads, and the hypothetical "this is what we could have won stuff"...all very pointless that's all imo...

I suspect you will just have to bite your lip and put up with it mate.

Yes, agreed we definitely need consistency. We looked good today, but bad against Wimbledon. Taking the relative strength of the team played/level of opposition stuff out of the equation we've won 3, lost 2, drawn 1 in preseason. When we play well we play really well, but when we don't it's pretty rotten.
We seem to either boss things or get stuffed. There will be games that just come down to purely who can just keep grinding longer to get that lucky break and I have no idea how we'd fare in such a scenario.
Charlton next season look to me like we're going to be one of those teams that "on their day" CAN beat just about anyone. But we're going to need to be on our day a lot to turn that into actual success and I'm still not 100% convinced Jones has managed to crack the problem of a dumb mistake leading to stupid goals conceded that has cost us badly recently.

Of course I appreciate that, I mean, my opinion means naff all in the grand scheme of things, life goes on, and after all it's just my opinion, but won't be changing my mind, memories are one thing and great for the soul, but continual beating yourself up about things beyond your control is just counter productive...again in my opinion... Agree to disagree I suppose...👍
30th birthday today, went with the family and newborn and what a birthday! Weren’t sure on the curry they served though mind you.
On to the game, what an improvement from last season - Adhame looks a gritty strong nuisance striker something we’ve need as it will allow others space when he is battling, TC - much beefier and looks a natural striker now.
The midfield in the second half were flowing! Anderson looked super tidy for his age, Doc, Coventry, Edward’s all put in crunching tackles.
For a long time the defence looked tough and hard to breakdown and finally we looked pretty assured at defending the few corners they had.
Just a friendly so don’t want to get carried away but it’s hard not to be positive after that display.
We’ve got a real squad with some real good back up options, and there seems to be a real togetherness and belief in Jones and his plan.

I think Miles will struggle to get selected in current lineup. For a big guy, he doesn't dominate defenders, hold the ball up or win many headers.
Campbell ticked all those boxes today.
