I posted this on the Alfie May thread yesterday, but i thought i'd share it again here.
Charlton don't do promotions without a goal scorer, it's a fact. To move May on without a proven goal scorer coming in lacks ambition and we are right to question Jones and the owners.
28/29 - Fred Whitlow 26 34/35 - Ralph Alan 33 35/36 - Harrold Hobbis 23 74/75 - Derek Hales 21 80/81 - Derek Hales 23 85/85 - Jimmy Melrose* (pro-rata) 20 97/98 - Clive Mendonca 28 99/00 - Andy Hunt 25 11/12 - Bradley Wright-Phillips 22 18/19 - Lyle Taylor 25
*Melrose's debut was on the 29th of March against Millwall in a 2-2 draw at the Draw
I'm not using pro-rata to win an argument, just facts.
Melrose scored 17 goals the following season for Charlton. In the league above and against much harder opposition. He was a proven goal scorer.
I'm telling you now, Charlton won't go up without a 20+ goal scorer.
You sound like me.
However, for me it goes deeper. Its not just about losing our top goalscorer but it's the fact we still need to sign a number of players that can score from midfield as well as create a number of chances for others. Last season we had neither. I realise we signed Berry but we need more than just one new midfielder.
Until I see 3 or 4 of these I fear we are in for another disappointing season.
I sound you, Golfie?
@AFKABartram please remove me from the forum with an immediate life ban.
Nah...there's only one Golfie...🤦♂️
And in his own words there will be zero Golfie’s once Alfie is sold.

So someone will need to fill the vacuum.
So, shall we take that as your application for the post of Golfie2
If Birmingham are on the scene with May, surely it would be in our interests to tell them that we have agreed a fee with Huddersfield and to consider a fee from them it would have to be higher.
Evidently we are considering making a move for Bishop of Lincoln….Stephen Conway.
I thought this was worth a good few LOL’s but didn’t get a single one……..Conway being The actual Bishop of Lincoln…..not the one who plays for Lincoln. Ya miserable bunch of bastards.
A Coventry fan’s opinion on the situation - I don’t think they’re on a wind up either when they’re trying to sell subscriptions to their newsletter on the same profile!

Always sad when you have to explain a joke @SoundAsa£...🤔

Kids these days. Don't even know their upper mid-level church of England bishops. Country's going to the dogs.

@SoundAsa£ Sorry mate, I should have got that joke. My favourite non fiction read is the CoE’s National Register of Clergy.
I've tried to remain mostly impartial, mostly because I genuinely do see that both arguments have merit but honestly both "sides" of this whole May argument don't come off particularly well any more.
May leaving DOES mean that we're going to need to make up a fair amount of goals. That's just a fact. The reason for his apparent departure doesn't come into that part of it - he goes and we need to do very good business or the team will be objectively weaker.
However it is possible that we COULD end up with a team that scores more overall and with better spread rather than relying almost entirely on one player and setting up a team that pretty much needs that one player to even work.
We could also end up with a team that doesn't work and now doesn't even have that "ace up the sleeve" of one proven goal scorer.
We could get promoted with May. We could fail to get promoted with May. We could get promoted without May, or we could fail to get promoted without him. All are possible.
But that doesn't mean that all this "realist" vs "SMT spokesperson"/"optimism" vs "bedwetter" tribal shit isn't deeply unedifying and slightly embarrassing for a bunch of adults.
The best part of these forum debates, is that it has bugger all effect on outcomes, but at least you can have a good whinge. I think if we go back to old Ian Maatsen threads, he would have been rated as pretty average, and many wouldn't have wanted to have another loan or buy him.
Whether May stays or goes, a striker is needed. What concerns is we haven't got the 1 needed (or the 2 needed, should May go). I still believe this squad is too light on quality and needs much better quality across the team to be competitive at top end of the table.
If signings in the key areas of goalkeeper, defence and midfield are not addressed, keeping or selling May will be irrelevant and we will all waste another year of our lives waiting for the train that never comes!
The jury is still out on the owners and Jones too.
Let's not fight amongst ourselves, as we have all proved our fealty to the Order of the Charltonites, through the years of following this often crap team, play at slightly more or less, crap teams around the country, reading the Greenwich Mercury to find out Curbs post-match views. Ringing ClubCall, paying £1 towards Ronnie Moore, watching us lose a Simod Cup Final, and finishing 16th in League One.
We put so much in to supporting that sometimes we forget that everyone counts. Keep the comments coming guys. It's gone 1am here and I've been reading all the posts enthusiastically for over an hour, whilst my wife went to sleep.

For what it's worth... I think Alfies worth no more than 800k. If he's worth 3mil, I must be worth at least a McDs triple cheeseburger.
Surely a guy who regularly scores 20+ goals in this division is worth more than 800k, should be at least 1.2m i think. Forget his age as well, he's 32 not 39, so hardly past it.
So, once the dust has settled and May is plying his trade elsewhere and scoring the winner against us and condemning us to another campaign in L1. Will we ever get the truth behind his leaving?
Will Jones or the SMT be asked to explain their reasoning, tell the truth? Or will it be the party line?

its exactly the same as last year, why could we buy him for 250k, why do champ clubs not want him, maybe he has attitude problem not jones.

Jones don't think he fits his teams playing style. Thats it!

I was beginning to wonder whether Alfie is a bit troublesome in the dressing room and doesn't get on with the other players.

I'm not saying that 7-800k is right either BTW but 3 million is hilariously optimistic.
