Havent seen the game, but note the comments about the pitch.I would say,in the 60s 70s and 80s even, most pitches were crap, look at the Old trafford games years ago.Difference was, they were all like it so players got used to it.Today, most pitches even in league 1 are good so when you get a shit heap players will struggle.
The conditions meant it was never going to be a classic and as Lisbie said after it was the sort of game you needed a big target man upfront to get the ball to but all 3 of ours are injured. Still thought our play under performed the conditions and some of the defending in the last 15mins or so was proper key stone cops stuff. Don't rate Gillesphey or Isted from what I have seen.
Fleetwood battling for their lives and using their style and sh*t pitch to pull off a great escape. We got drawn in a bit and weightings of pass were well off regardless of the surface. Pleased for Alfie and though Isted pulled off a few very decent saves. Think this will be the last trip here for a bit…
I seriously doubt 'every pitch' was like that in the 1970s. Were groundsmen back then all just the stupidest, laziest person they could find?
As opposed to people today making stupid lazy comments about a time they know nothing about?
Are you genuinely saying that that is what every football match was like back then? And everyone didn't, like, take up bowls instead?
I’d say it was the norm. Have a look at The Big Match Revisited some time. Even top flight games were often played on mudheaps so you can imagine what a pitch at a division 3 match was like.
I can't speak for the 70s, cos I wasn't around then, but the 80s pitches were definitely of variable quality. I'm still emotionally scarred by the cup game at West Brom in the 89/90 season where the winning goal deflected off a puddle. Have a look at the Museum youtube channel, by February most goalmouths are muddy, probably extending up to the edge of the area, it's an even bet that the centre circle would be too, and some pitches would be cutting up more generally.
I'm still surprised how some lifers bring out the negativity vibe... Its really quite depressing.
We can't play beautiful football every week but if your have the odd stinky game just make sure you don't get bloody beat.
A few weeks ago we were so far in the smelly stuff that a miracle was needed, now we're unbeaten in 8 games and Kanu and May are scoring.
Nathan is of course not a messiah but he's got a tune out of some players that I though were actual zombies and got us points in games the vast majority of us would never have believed.
This is why he was recruited....period.
I'm not bothered about a poor performance if you're still getting points and the manager is still understanding what needs to be done and deeming if certain players have the mental sharpness to progress.
Once we get survival sorted (soon hopefully) we can then judge Nathan on his player acumen in respect of who we end up signing but way before then there needs to be a significant cull.
Don't forget it's not just Charlton being rebuilt it's also Nathans career after the Southampton disaster. So let's give him every support we can because so far I'm bloody happy and relieved to be where we are at the moment. To be in the top 5 in the latest form guide is amazing after the absolute sh*t show we've all endured.
Fleetwood away is just one of those games you have to get over and done with. Pain in the arse to get to, awful pitch, etc.
We should have seen it out, but in the grand scheme of things it won’t matter. I thought our subs were a little too late, I wonder if Jones is really using these final fairly meaningless games to give as many minutes as possible to the players he think will form part of his plans for next season, hence the late subs.
I’d like to give some praise to Daniel Kanu. We created almost nothing for him today, but he didn’t stop chasing down every ball, giving their defence a tough time for the whole time he was on the pitch.

It was by this end of the season,
Barely a blade of grass in the penalty boxes, centre circle and midfield - only the wings still had grass. Heavy rain turned pitches into swamp and passes stopped in puddles.
Nevertheless, we saw some terrifically exciting games on surfaces like that.
And then in April the mud dried out and the lumpy pitch baked rock hard in the sun. Bobbly pitch was an understatement - passing the ball on the ground was a lottery.
Groundsmen did the best they could with what they had.
Nothing like the swirling wind we used to get in the 1970’s
I know you're joking, but there's probably something in that. Nowadays many grounds are fully enclosed at the corners very few were back then. Doesn't apply to Fleetwood obvs, but many clubs.
Brownie and Lisbie both very politely saying that this squad is nowhere near good enough for automatic promotion.
Cant argue with that but Jones has only been here 6 weeks and is working with a squad he inherited. I'm confident that he will already know the areas he wants new signings in, and i'm equally confident we'll be miles better next season.

Funny thing the Valley pitch was better back then....or maybe I have my rose tinted glasses on.
Back home in Altrincham. Brilliant couple of hours in the delightful Strawberry Gardens pub, one of my favorite away pubs. All downhill from then on. One of the worst games of professional football I have seen supporting Charlton. I agree with the criticism of the bald bouncy pitch, and the strong wind causing the ball to stall in the air, so was difficult to guage your header. What disappointed me is that we tried to out Fleetwood with Fleetwood type tactics. The midfield was so disappointing in quality, misplaced passes, hoofing the ball, they were all over the place. Even on that pitch there was some mileage in getting the ball down and playing to our strengths, but it never happened. So, so disappointing. But we left Fleetwood with a point, so not all doom and gloom.
We concede a goal almost every time we play. Cray Valley paper Mills scored against us. Carlisle who are bottom on the league scored twice against us. And again today we managed to concede against a team who will probably get relegated.
Number one priority for Nathan Jones this summer is to put together a defence that can keep a clean sheet.
I believe he will.
Promotion sides are generally built on a tight defence. They only have to nick a goal and it's a win.

I suppose the answer is that they don’t have the equipment that is now at their disposal plus most ‘grass’ now includes a weave of something else (?) that wasn’t available back then. It’s indisputable that pitches are far superior now to the sixties, seventies, eighties even.
If that's what we produce after have a full week without a game I pity those going to Exeter after we have 2 full weeks without one 😄.
Should be safe already but with 2 of the bottom 4 having having games in hand then I'd like us to get to 50 points asap.
Cheltenham really need to pull something special out of the bag. They are 10 points behind us with vastly inferior GD and their last win was 8 games ago.
Cambridge and Burton must be their targets. Realistically Cheltenham are unlikely to catch us now, unless we don't win any of our final 7 games.

I agree with you generally. But how many of that first 11 today do we seriously think could be in a first 11 challenging for automatic next season?

Frustrating to travel such a long distance and have football spoiled by a bad pitch. Lost count the amount of time the ball has hoofed into the air.
Draw probably fair result. Think NJ could have changed it sooner. Bakinson for Anderson would have been my change at 65 mins.

Cut head after a clash of heads early in the game.

You'll remember I used to start up the Match Thread for a couple of seasons but the constant negativity by some drove me to quit.

REG Maybe

Coventry Maybe if he toughens up

May Yes, because of his goals
Small Yes
Of the injured players only Leaburn
That leaves a hell of a lot of work to do.
Lisbie says we need 6, so that is about right.
