MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic Vs Derby County : Saturday 3rd February 2024 : KO 15:00

Big game...as indeed they are all turning out to be the closer we get to the bottom 4, and the end of the season...and today it's Derby County who visit us in the first of two encounters this month, and todays match throws up a particularly annoying point with our ex CBT no doubt making a bloody nuisance of himself, should he get picked of course...
We have gone toe-to-toe with Derby on 89 previous occasions, winning 31, Derby winning 38 and the remaining 20 encounters resulting in draws, on the surface not a great deal between the two of us... last meeting between us came in February 2023 when Derby ran out 2-0 victors at Pride Park, but that was so last year wasn't it...
Ed Duckworth is the man in the middle today. He's overseen 23 fixtures so far this season and has shown 106 yellow and five red cards, sound 's a right trigger happy so and so!....can see additions to his tally today very easily...

Anyway here we go...

Alfie May will captain the Addicks for this afternoon’s game against Derby County.

The striker takes the armband as George Dobson misses the game with a tight calf...that don't sound good...

Dobson is replaced by the returning Conor Coventry, who missed last weekend’s draw with Blackpool with concussion. Tayo Edun returns from suspension in place of Nathan Asiimwe.

Kayne Ramsay, who joined the Addicks on deadline day, is named on the substitutes bench.

The Addicks are expected to line up in the 3-5-2 formation used in recent weeks with Lucas Ness, Terell Thomas and Macaulay Gillesphey in a back three in front of Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Coventry will join Rarmani Edmonds-Green and Tyreeq Bakinson in midfield behind May and Freddie Ladapo.

Ramsay is joined on the bench by Harry Isted, Lloyd Jones, Lewis Fiorini, Louie Watson, Tyreece Campbell and Daniel Kanu.

Charlton: Maynard-Brewer; Ness, Thomas, Gillesphey; T.Watson, Edmonds-Green, Coventry, Bakinson, Edun; Ladapo, May

Subs: Isted, Ramsay, Jones, Fiorini, L.Watson, Campbell, Kanu

Welcome to The Valley Kayne, and maybe we could get to see you at some time today..

  • AMB, Ness, TWatson, Tight calf Dobson? Deflated by they line up. Hope for the best as always

  • Hmm. This will be fun
  • We had big trouble consistently getting the ball to the front two last week at Blackpool. Have to hope they’ve worked on in training.
  • No CBT
  • We'll hopefully see, and need to see more effort from Watson and Edun today - Seeing that much has been made about Jones' style where he utilises Wing / Full-Backs a lot... We've just got newbies in those areas too, so extra pressure to perform now!!

Its where we'll need the creativity to largely come from

Will have to be over the top with no wingers and no proper creative 10. Seeing the team makes you realise how weak the squad still is.
Still, you never know, somebody may surprise us.
  • Was worried before the teams were announced, seriously scared now we know Dobbo is missing

Seems to be the right thing to do to start with TWatson, it's his shirt to lose ..... he either plays out of his skin or Ramsey comes on.

  • So the Dobson doubters get to see their theory tested that we're being held back by his lack of positional sense and limitations on the ball.
  • Also, reckon Dobson has caught 'tight calf' from CBT, off to Hungary next week?
  • Just don't get why Louie Watson doesn't get a go. It's all very samey samey in midfield, he'd give us something different.
  • Just relieved we're at home... If we were @ Pride Park today, I'd say we'd have no hope, rather than Bob hope with the line up
  • Transfer window in Hungary doesn’t slam shut until Feb 14th.
  • Coventry is a perfectly fine Dobbo replacement, so no concerns there for me.

We've had a week of training, so hopefully we've worked on our defensive shape.
  • Hope Dobson hasn't got the same type of injury as Blackett-Taylor- transfer upcoming strain.
  • Hmmmm, the suspicious amongst us fans wondering what type of “tight calf” it is 🤔 I thought Dobbo was indestructible 😉
  • Tight calf  😂😂😂😂.

    See-ya Dobbo.

  • REG is not a midfielder. Square pegs in round holes again. I would put him into the back four for Ness and then put Watson in midfield.

    This makes no sense
  • Anyone concerned that CBT is going to find all that space behind our wing backs, that he used to leave when he played there himself...
  • That feels like a conservative Applescore lineup trying to nick a point from a better opponent.  Hopefully that is not jones selection.  Add either Watson or Fiorini in at least they are more inclined to attack.  Drop reg back and get non league ness out of the lineup
  • Crazy that even after January we're still stuck playing Ness
  • Does feel like Fleming's brief is to not lose while we wait for the new manager to come in. Lots of pressure on Bakinson to drive that ball forward. He's been good at it so far but his final ball isn't great, which is why he's generally played more as a defensive midfielder, so we need to take the chances we create. It's definitely a more creative midfield having Coventry in there instead of Dobson (or it would also be if we had Coventry instead of REG, calm down) so should be less static than it was last time out. Hopefully they'll throw a lot at us and we catch them on the break

    No, he's not playing.
  • I cant load Charlton TV on the phone app. Anyone else?
