I think we know that within football circles contracts and fees are effectively known but ‘media’ reports likely exaggerate / misrepresent.

I would suggest that a decent agent doesn’t reveal anything about what’s on the table from another club. He wants the interested club to make an offer and why would you tell them this is what you need to beat. If it’s not acceptable you knock it back and say we’ve had better whether that’s true or not.Woodwork said:

If clubs are both battling over a player they would be well aware of the transfer fee and wages offered by another club through the agent. I think the whole undisclosed agreements are to stop other clubs outside of that from knowing so say if small was to leave and we got given X amount of compensation if we were to go to hull and try and sign one of their players it stops them going we know uve just made an extra 300k from small give us an extra 200k of that or you’re not signing him etcvalleynick66 said:

On the other hand, you've got to be at the right club for you. Join a struggling team, with disgruntlement in the stands, and things can get pretty grim. The Charlton fans will be a lot more understanding if he has a bad game, or the team struggles. And Preston is a pretty underwhelming club at the moment.valleynick66 said:

In that scenario he still wins though. 250k plus a big salary anyway offsets a grim season knowing he would be sold on anyway.killerandflash said:

At any stage of their career a footballer should take the money if it’s a significantly bigger offer. You’re one injury away from this being the last contract you ever get. I see your point mate however if a player has the ceiling that he seems to have at this point in n his career I think the development is more critical than extra money no championship footballer is on peanuts if I were him I would be thinking less about the highest paid contract and more about what can it do for my career and hopefully develop into the promised landse9addick said:

No mucking around. As that is their wage structure. Ie Small wouldn’t accept a lower wage than his new team mates.0 -
Isn’t the agent Jonathan Fortune? I’m sure he would play everything by the book. If Small does go, I believe the club will have done everything possible to keep him.
Having been to Deepdale on numerous occasions, I feel there are better places and teams where Small could ply his trade.2 -
Feels a bit like when Wycombe came in for Lloyd Jones in the January window that the long term better option was to stay with us, and compared to Preston I think we're still the long term better option.
For me Preston haven't really done anything in the Championship for a long time so no idea how they can afford to pay good wages with the crowds they get. Think there time could be up this year.

It’s understandable from a Charlton fans perspective because our devotion to our club is not sane. We want all of our best players to stay with us in perpetuity but have no qualms about the club releasing tons of players every year that don’t make the cut. I think, objectively, neutrals would see that for Small it makes more sense to move to a team that have been in the Championship for a decade and are willing to pay you significantly more money than stay with a club that are going to be favourites for relegation and will pay you significantly less. But I understand why Charlton fans would cling on to arguments to the contrary, because I do too.AberystwythAddick said:

But football isn’t a normal job mate I’m not saying the guy shouldn’t go but not to somewhere of a similar team as us. A championship footballer on average earns what ? £15k a week ? It would make more sense if it was Brum or WBA or a different midland team as that's close to home for him etc.
Preston isn't a great place to live, let's be honest, and whilst it's more money, will they have more ambition than us? Doubtful0 -

So a random social media account said Thierry Small is going to Preston for a big wage increase and it's suddenly Gospel and many Cafc fans run with it.
A good chance that Thierry does leave as the days become weeks despite our promotion if we hear nothing of scarfy and the official site teasing us that there is good Small news on its way.
TS is an enthusiastic character who can beat 3 players in one go (Lincoln home match at the Valley attacking the Jimmy Seed end) or the mandatory running the ball out of play.
He is going to be more consistent as he learns his craft and it would give his Charlton team mates and especially the fans a boost for the popular player on and off the pitch if he signed a new contract with the escape clause that would be fair to both Cafc and Thierry.
