  • If we can get a few more Indian players to retire hurt, we might stand a chance!

    9 men, they've only got 9 men.
  • state the obvious, India running away with this .. Bazball ? .. we can do that they are saying
  • Swann gets England a wicket there.
  • Patidar somehow pulls a long hop from Hartley straight to Rehan at short midwicket for a 10 ball duck

    191-2
  • At close India 196-2 though, effectively, three down due to the absence of Ashwin. That is a lead of 322. If they bat for half a day tomorrow then that lead will be up to somewhere near 500 giving us a day and a half to chase that down or, more realistically, survive.

all too often, another mid order collapse unfortunately
    Not just mid order.....total collapse.

    224 for 2 to 319 all out.
All our five innings in this Series have been dominated by the odd one man isolated efforts in each - Pope's 196, Duckett's 153, Crawley's 76 & 73 and Stokes' 70. Not a single other 50.
Compared to our two 100s and three 50s, India have had four 100s and five 50s. In addition to Crawley and Stokes not turning those 70s into big hundreds, we've now had no less than 23 occasions when we've got to 20 plus and not turned those into 50s. That is really poor.
  • They can declare now they’ve got enough

I'll use the 'bazball' moniker once more, please forgive me .. perhaps our middle order unlike the openers, is not suited to that brand of cricket .. be a pity if (especially) Root loses much hard earned credibility trying to be what he just isn't
  • Wicket to Root - he has Rohit LBW for 19 (29) post review

    30-1
Root is becoming more useful as a bowler than he is as a batsman on this tour.
Out again earlier playing a reverse sweep.
    Just bat properly Joe.

Duckett and Crawley has definitely benefited from the Ben and Baz approach but why didn't they just say to Root your test runs and average prove you don't need to change as you accumulate runs at a decent rate anyway.

Like the Panenka penalty, very clever when it comes off but Joe's dismissal looked poor today with set back slips in place.
He was also caught at short third man when hitting against the line in a recent test.

It was the moment the Indian started to believe again after Root was out followed quickly by that well known slow starter Bairstow.
  • Bazball has worked by freeing up the mindset of the likes of Duckett, Crawley, Pope etc, removing that fear of failure and allowing them to display their talent.
Root didn't require a change of mindset IMO, it was already working for him.

  • England have won 14 out of 21 tests under the Bazball attitude and probably (yes they did) lose the 2nd test ?  against the Aussie's when they went too gung ho.

It's getting the balance between positive cricket and playing the ball on merit.
  • Glad I went to bed at the lunch break and didn’t stay up for the second session this time. Shocking.

Root can just play his classical style of innings and all of a sudden he has 50 off of 75 balls which is more than an acceptable run rate

Jaiswal gets another double hundred and they declare; or maybe not.

    Just 500+ to win !
  • edited February 18
No declaration until world record of 6's for Jaisball !
  • Ashwin will bowl in English 2nd Innings when he arrives back.
  • Will we attempt to bat out for the draw or go for the impossible and just lose
  • Absolutely bollox.
    Brain dead cricket

When I see run outs like that, I get the same feeling as when Charlton make a defensive error that leads to an oppo goal. There's a sickening inevitability about it. Brain dead indeed!

This could be an absolute thrashing

Pope goes - 20-3 and just the small matter of another 537 runs to win

Two batsmen in now who are both under a lot of pressure - Root and Bairstow. Time for a bit of Yorkshire grit.

Two wickets lost in quick succession, including Bairstow for a duck after the worst review in the history of Test cricket.

225-4 and still 220 behind. Sigh.
Following his poor showing in the World Cup, I said after the First Test that Bairstow should get two more games to prove himself. Well, to my mind, he has one more innings. He's not alone in failing in this Series but he is the one that is vulnerable if Brook is available should he not get runs in the second innings.

We can't have a situation where three batsmen, namely Root (70 @ 14.00), Bairstow (98 @ 19.60) and Foakes (93 @ 18.60) continually getting out without contributing in a meaningful way because, effectively, we have a one man middle order of Stokes. Foakes is worth his place alone with the gloves, you drop Root at your peril and he is our third spinner anyway so that just leaves Bairstow. It is also obvious that he struggles with his movement following his very serious golfing accident so Brook will bring added value in the field too.
Well that really should be that. Bairstow out LBW (yet again) for 4. Only surprise is that he didn't overrule his batting partner, Root and review it even if it was knocking down all three

    28-4

  • Embarrassing. Had thr opportunity in our first innings to take the game away with a good start and them town to 10 possibly 9 men (2 bowlers down). We had to make sure we got Bumrah into his 3rd and 4th spells and then go full bazball. Instead we threw it away and look where we are. On the end of a thrashing.

Bairstow will keep his place as its all pals together.Or Foakes will come down with a mystery injury and miss the rest of the series just so Bairstow keeps his place and keeps.Id like to see a couple of fresh new batsman in the summer and hope everything is ok with Harry Brook and he comes back in.

Big innings for Root and Stokes.

  • Bairstow wanted to review because it's what he does.
  • The Sad thing was both Duckett and Crawley had started quite conservatively until that ridiculous run out and hadn't looked in any trouble.

India have a great squad of players to pick from and just like the last tour when they come back from 1 down they are relentless.

Root's dismissal in the 1st innings was definitely the Catalyst for India to take control.
  • the 2 LBWs have been very cruel

Root was saving Bairstow's review for himself. The seventh time Jadeja has Root LBW.

    50-5

    Both just clipping.
If the umpire had given not out they would have both survived.
It's what happens when you are up against it.
