Well if we take a step back and assess those that gained promotion last season, all having smashed the league to pieces, Ipswich probably had by far the biggest investment and have been astounding again. Wednesday did the unthinkable in getting rid of Moore and haven't recovered. Plymouth I would say, have a budget similar to Charlton, are holding their own and I doubt they have spent big, so would be my pick for the best run club.
What is their secret? Maybe Scott should take a look.

Had forgotten Kilkenny. That is an unimaginably bad list of loanees that Scott has recruited when all put together:
Penny- now unemployed, one of the poorest players I have seen pull on the jersey.
Kane- now playing in front of 60 fans in Gibralter. Spent most of his with us injured, looked poor the brief moments he played.
Kilkenny- back at Bournemouth and not featuring, assume no one wanted him on loan this year. Totally ineffectual for us.
Camara - came to us with a chronic recent injury record, spent almost his entire loan injured. Seems we may be stuck with him. Best case he gets fit quick but then he will go to the AfCON.and probably return injured anyway!
Abankwah - barely featured. Recalled early.
Tedic - a non entity. Will almost certainly be recalled. No impact whatsoever.
Chem Campbell - has some skill and ability but Apples binned him completely for weeks and plays him in the wrong position. Will at least have a career in professional football ahead of him.
L.Watson - decent enough but lightweight and for all his busyness he doesn't really create. A good squad player.
Compare them to previous loanees like to JRS, Cullen, Beilik, Gallagher... It's night and day in both attitude and ability.
I honestly wouldn’t spend much in January unless there was someone amazing available who’ll be snapped up. More players, and much better value, to be had in the summer window.
This season’s over, no point throwing good money after bad. If there’s money available then I would invest it in the summer when it’ll go further.

To be fair, you do get more bad loans than good ones. For every Cullen you have a David Davis, for every Bielik you get a Beram Keyal…for every JRS, an Andre Green.

The Charlton in-squad players are Aneke, CBT, Dobson, Edun, Fraser, Hector, Jones, Kirk, May, McGrandles, Camara, Taylor, Tedic, T Thomas, L Watson, T Watson.
Abankwah and C Campbell are in the U21 number.
Our availability record for the experienced players (in-squad) list is poor as 25% have been out for a while and there's also Leaburn from the U21's who has been out too.
I think the budget probably needs adjusting to grow our in-squad numbers and would like to see that happen for next season. Although if the EFL rules allow it I'd also like to see it happen in January.

In last 5 years, we’ve have 4 maybe 5 good loans.
Whilst I agree, for 6 out of 8 to have zero impact and the other 2 to be squad level players with minimal impact themselves is dreadful.
I know I was a bit disingenuous lining them up against our best loanees of recent times but for every David Davis, Keyal and Green there is also a Jonny Williams or Elliot Lee.
5 loanees should imo see 1-2 top notch, 1-2 squad players and 1-2 flops.

Even Watson has been somewhat disappointing. Has offered very little when used (albeit sparingly) in recent weeks.

Well I don’t want to bore people with it and there are no guarantees but we could have had Lewis bate for £2k a week - instead we took Watson for £500 a week - I know who has the bigger profile / pedigree

Nelson Abbey, Marcus Mcguane, Herbie Kane, Femi Azeez, Martial Godo & JCH are all out of contract in the summer. Davis Keillor-Dunn is contracted until summer 25 but playing in a division below.
Marc Leonard is one to keep tabs on, Brighton highly rate him but he’s only contracted until summer 25 currently.

We are where we are because of Andy Scott. No tangible difference between this muppet running recruitment and Thomas Sandgaard's son. In fact I may be as bold to suggest Sandgaards son did a better job. I'll just mention Tedic, Penney, Walker and Camara. His appointment of Appleton the stand out candidate who's a wizz "on the grass" and specialises in "developing youth" I've seen no evidence of it. Our youth players have regressed and on the grass the starting 11 are struggling to string 2 passes together. Andy Scott is demonstrateably clueless. No sign of the 'winning mentality' he was waffling on about. Appleton and the players will be the fall guy's, but this clown owns the situation, he created it.
The problem with young players you have to bring them through no more than two at the time and you need the experienced players to help bring them on in that time. When you have them where you want them, then and only then can you bring more in. We have an issue where we play too many youngsters and they are not helped enough by the more senior players where we have too many softies that need help themselves.

A team finishing the season on a bit of a charge and getting a higher placed finish is also likely to attract better quality players in the summer than a side who plodded to 16th.

There was time back at the start of January 2022 when we were above Bolton in the league. They went on to have a strong back end to the season with strong January recruitment. Will be many years until we finish above Bolton in the league.
