I've only met Dave in the last few years when he has been a regular participant in our Battlefield Tours. I was told by his good friend @church-lane that Dave was ill and probably wouldn't be a part of next years tour but I didn't realise just how ill he was. He was a great guy, very friendly and will be greatly missed by all on our next tour.
My thoughts are with his wife and daughters, his extended family and all his many friends at this very sad time. RIP Dave.
Kind of knew Dave from a distance before the protests but got to know him through our time on CARD. Genuinely one of life's best ones. Huge man, his height no doubt boosted by his enormous heart.
I knew he was managing cancer but was a real gut punch to learn he'd passed. Gutted is an understatement. Always looked forward to spending time with him, which was way too infrequent in recent times. Dave will be much missed by an awful lot of people.
Thanks for the time we spent mate - rest in peace.
RIP Dave So many good times following Charlton all over the country (and a few dodgy moments as well) for many years. You'll be missed by many. Condolences to your family and all your friends.
That is a real shock. I am really saddened by this news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Dave but am aware of his comments on Charlton Life and of course, his excellent blog, Drinking During The Game. Through those I know he was a passionate and devoted fan who was equally so about the Scotland rugby team. He wrote wonderfully well and had a knack of putting the views and thoughts of most of us in to clear and logical words. From all the comments made, Dave was clearly a thoroughly decent person and well liked by many. I among, many others, will miss reading what he thinks about all things Charlton. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP Dave.
RIP Dave - crazy day back in 2007. On business in Vienna and came across this! Marauding Scots with a Charlton fan - what could this mean! We lose another voice of reason with DDTG, Dr Kish gone, an iconic blog is required.
I never had the pleasure to meet Dave in person but we’d shared a few DMs during the RD campaign, and seemed a top, top bloke, and also a warrior in protection of his beloved club. I am shocked to read this. My condolences to his loved ones.
Remember him telling me about a charity auction at Millwall. They was raffling a signed Millwall match ball that went for around £120.00 Next up was a signed Charlton one. With no interest, Dave kept bidding himself up on it, to take it to £130.00.
A Millwall bloke sitting nearby was bemused as to why he kept on adding to his own bid. His mate told him that was Dave's generosity.
Dave told me that there was no way a Millwall ball was going for more than a Charlton one :-)
What a fabulous story
Tears of sadness this morning, and now tears of laughter. What a day.
I met Dave when we were both 17, on the East Terrace at an evening game, we hit it off immediately and became firm friends, not just following Charlton but drinking copious amounts of Hurlimann in The George in Greenwich.
As previously said, a proud Scot and devoted Charlton supporter. A warm, generous and humble guy.
Comments
exchanged plenty of comment and banter with him over many years here on Charlton Life.
Sleep easy, Dave.

Another that I've never met, but an integral part of my Charlton experience, both on here and on his blog.
RIP Dave and condolences to his family and close friends.
Will miss your contributions.
