Match Thread: Stevenage vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 16th September 2023 @ 3pm

edited September 2023 in General Charlton
@eastterrace6168 is off celebrating with family this weekend, so I'm deputising for Michael Appleton's first game as Charlton manager head coach. We wait with bated breath to see whether his first week in charge has had any effect on our frequently bemoaned defensive frailties, and if it's all going to kick off with Steve Evans on the touchline. Headline points are:
  • Full league debut for James Abankwah
  • Miles Leaburn makes his first league start of the season
  • Chuks Aneke is named on the bench
  • Alfie May is out due to concussion protocols
  • Nathan Asiimwe is out with a slight quad injury
Charlton: Isted; Abankwah, Jones, Hector, Edun; Dobson (c), Anderson, C.Campbell; T.Campbell, Leaburn, Blackett-Taylor
Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Ness, Thomas, Taylor, L.Watson, Aneke, Tedić

  • Lots of attacking threats. But has he got the defence organised?
  • very attacking side even without May .. come on you Addicksssaaaa
  • Still no sign of Other Watson which is weird, unless he's also injured. Abankwah will be VERY interesting to see in action.

Hopefully we get to see Aneke have his 20 minutes of being a "cheat code" before he's out till Christmas.

    4-3-3?
I imagine it's 4231/433 with Leaburn up top, the two Campbells and CBT more attacking than Dobson and Anderson

  • Team looks ok although to be fair I’m still just on wiki seeing who some of them are.

    Presuming he's not fit yet...
  • Do my eyes deceive me or do I see two strikers on the bench.
    Its a miracle.

He didn't have a proper season, so he's doing it now.

If he's not ready, he won't be selected.

  • Is May suspended?
  • Is May suspended?
    Concussed
  • Is May suspended?
Out with concussion until next week
  • What’s with the sodding stream? I have live view of the National League level stadium, which keeps stopping and no studio, just when they have something to talk about. Grr

So two more players out after some kind of incident in training, unless May walked into a glass door. Just can’t make it up.

Got the ball in the face during training
  • 5 players in there teens starting again.

Less than half the team is in their 20s.
  • Daniel Kanu is dropped presumably.
He might have reason to feel a bit aggrieved.

Yeah a little harsh on him, given how he's done this season.

But hope he's not too disheartened, deep down he probably knows he's fifth choice, based on the four names ahead of him.
  • My prediction:

We are magically solid defensively for the first time in ages but can’t score because May is out.  It’s a charlton thing 👍🏻
  • It would be a brave call to include Kanu on the bench ahead of a Man City loanee in your first game...
