Zach Mitchell - Sept 2025 on a season long loan to Hibernian (p22)

Nathan Jones on Zach Mitchell.
“We’ll scan [Zach's injury]. It's a shame as we made the decision for him to not go back out on loan as I really like what I'm seeing in him. In terms of evolving, that is what we want - we want someone who has his capabilities.
"He's brave, bold, athletic, hungry and has a stellar attitude," he added. "He ticks a lot of boxes for us. We gave him that opportunity and he took it with both hands. He was absolutely excellent until he was taken off. Hopefully it isn’t anything serious and he will be back in contention. He did himself no harm the other night."

“If you have seen this kid play – he is 19 and came through the academy,” said Jones. “That is what we have – TC (Tyreece Campbell) and Karoy Anderson. These are young kids that have come through the academy, who are fearless and truly outstanding. Zach Mitchell was really close to being involved today and even starting.

Actually, it is something I really like about Anderson. He keeps playing his game and isn't afraid to make mistakes. In the long term, it is going to benefit him IMO.12

Wonder if NJ sees Zach as a replacement/cover for Coventry, especially as CC is now suspended.
Zach can play in midfield and centre back to a useful sub to have.0 -
Mitchell replacing Coventry against Stockport is worth paying the money to see.
Commentators nightmare mind.0 -
Is he out of contract in the summer?
If so they probably need to give him some minutes this season to show him he has a chance of breaking through, or he might get pissed off and just leave.1 -
Can see that with Zach particularly if we're sticking with 4 at the back. I think that would signal the end for Taylor if he couldn't even get a game when Coventry is out.Henry Irving said:Wonder if NJ sees Zach as a replacement/cover for Coventry, especially as CC is now suspended.

He said "it's almost impossible to press Birmingham" after we've just spent 95 minutes successfully pressing them.
He also said it takes some time to implement the 4-4-2 box midfield set up, giving me the impression it's taken weeks to work on it.
Ok it may have taken weeks and I appreciate it's professional football, but I'm pretty sure if we were playing a Sunday league game and set up 4-4-2 with the midfield 4 tucking in, 2 further forward it could be set up very quickly. (Awaits avalanche of tactician comments).0 -

As an aside, my favourite Charlton midfields included 4 central midfielders- Stuart, Parker, Jensen, Holland, with Parker and Jensen in the middle and of course the diamond Bielik, Cullen, Aribo, Williams1 -
Maybe Jones was considering Zach in Docherty’s place? I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take Coventry’s place when he’s suspended as mentioned above.wmcf123 said:

Running around a lot may indeed be the answer in Sunday League but may I politely suggest you have a very simplistic view of how you implement and coordinate “the press” in the professional game.
Dependent on the opponent structure, playing style and strengths there are a range of different triggers and interactions requiring players to “read” “react” to every game situation. Get it wrong and good opponents will play through it. Birmingham are a very good side.
I am not sure Jones is the one talking bollocks.

The way the benches work in L1/L2 (seven named, up to five subs) means that to make the most of your options, you’ll want max one keeper and one utility defender.REG is the ultimate utility in that respect, but it’s been Potts & Gillesphey on occasion too - also why when Mitchell was dropped he didn’t make the bench at all, and why Terry Taylor likely isn’t taking up a spot on the bench from an attack minded player either. All that is to say that you’re then able to have up to five attacking options off the bench to change the game when needed.
Go back and look at most of our benches this season, only a couple of times has more than one defender been named.3 -
“4-4-2 box midfield” and “4-2-2-2” is the same thing. Just as “4-4-2 diamond” or “4-1-2-1-2” means the same formation.Grapevine49 said:Covered End said:

Going to be interesting to see what formation we use over the next few games given we pressed and passed so well. Other clubs will be more direct and may look to counter it that formation if we go to it.2 -
Agreed, that's why I said "with the midfield 4 tucking in, 2 further forward", ie a box midfield.Grapevine49 said:Covered End said:
