I see the guy who presided over the awful transfer window (and publicly endorsed its outcome) and has served up a pile of dross for a number of games now after winning a few, just got a new contract.. great to have a small squad is it really? It’s fallen away like a stack of cards since we missed the playoffs boat.
There’s as much chance of Dean Holden being Charlton manager for the next three and a quarter years as there is of Lucas Ness being here that long. Nothing against the bloke but the announcement is about as meaningful as a government statement on stopping the boats.
I take your point and given as it is us, it is more likely to be true than false. But there is a significance in it given that Holden was thought to be likely to walk at the end of the season and instead he has made a commitment to us. That wasn't expected by me and I am now loooking at what happens in the coming months. Sandgaard has been a terribe owner and we can argue which terrible owner should take us over next or not, but there isn't a law against him making good decisions and there never was, he just didn't make them, and in the meantime here he seems to have made one. Long may that continue although one swallow doesn't make a summer of course.

I didn't really feel anything positive when I read about Holden's contract extension and I'm a bit concerned that the early stability has eroded into nothing and there doesn't seem to be a lot behind it. He seems like a decent man, no question there. He clearly would rather play 352 but he's realised he can't with what he's got and I appreciate that flexibility after Jackson's single shape and Garner's singular style but I think it's far too easy to just say the players aren't good enough and shrug when we lose. It lets everyone off the hook. We are 16th in League One. Are we seriously saying that Lincoln, Exeter, Port Vale and Fleetwood wouldn't be improved by some of our first team players. I'm sure any of those teams would be laughing if they had JRS and CBT as wide options, or Dobson in their midfield. Would Shrewsbury we unable to find a place for Sessegnon? Would Exeter turn their noses up at Hector or Fraser? Sure, you can argue that it's the full combination of these players that's the problem, but the reality is these are ok players who we can't seem to be able to turn into anything resembling a reflection of their individual talents. Holden got a couple of players he wanted and Kilkenny hasn't looked good since his first game for us, Hector is ok but not helping us cut out the silly goals and Bonne seems to be some kind of blood pressure test kit in human form.
It worries me. If we get a decent takeover with some investment, will Holden be able to shape what he has with additions or would he need a full 22 man overhaul and a few years to bed them in? After a rubbish game like that I normally try to extract some morsel of positivity, but I'm struggling today. Other than Sessegnon's wonder goal I can only think of AM-B keeping us in the game with a couple of smart saves, and a couple of moments from Clare and Hector that showed flashes of ability. Sess made too many mistakes to give him MotM imho, despite the goal. I've been wondering if Clare could be tried in midfield, but as others have said, perhaps he's too prone to giving the ball away? Went with my Arsenal mate who's previous games this season were QPR and Brighton. He couldn't believe how much worse we looked today. Even our bankers, Rak-Sakyi and Dobbo were poor. Hopefully just a blip. Actually I thought Kanu looked better than Bonne, and I'd start give him more minutes ASAP. Campbell also shows promise, at least against a tiring defence.
But it's the midfield that look almost non existent. Despite my doubt about Clare I think we really have to try him there. It might well go wrong, but it's gotta be tried while we're safe from relegation (we're safe from relegation, right?). Otherwise he can end up as backup for Egbo. We need to use the rest of the season to experiment, and Holden's three years contract should make him secure enough to do that. I like Holden, he seems to get Charlton, he speaks well, but is he a good tactician? I think the jury's very much out on that.

Everything about yesterday screamed "slow death". Empty stadium, appalling football, the once great Valley pitch an embarrassment, a 3 year contract for a manager who increasingly seems as clueless as the players and owner.
I don't see where it is going to end either. The same old spin coming out of the club "takeover progressing, want to get out of the division asap, don't want to loose money, conversations about the squad on going etc etc" All suggest that any new owner has bugger all money.
Make no mistake, relegation is a serious prospect next season.

He needs to be supported in the summer to build a strong squad, and if TS is still in charge he won't be supported. Of course that means we will start the season with a mediocre (or worse) squad, at some point we will have a poor run of results and Holden will get sacked. Rinse and repeat.
When all I’m thinking about that game is , judging by the enthusiasm with which every pigeon kept alighting onto the pitch, that the groundsman had seeded the pitch with a touch too much seed, then it kind of sums up the drabness of it all.

Another turgid, lifeless performance, where we were fortunate to take a point, given Stanley's second half dominance.
We started well enough, with Blackett-Taylor skinning their full back on a number of occasions but rapidly ran out of steam before giving away yet another farcical goal. Clare did well to prevent a corner but then gave the ball away with a sloppy pass, enabling their guy to put a cross over, where we were outnumbered at the far post (I think Kilkenny was trying to cover off two of their big lads). The result was a free header back across the 6 yard box, with Hector compounding matters by mindlessly being drawn towards the ball and leaving Whalley totally isolated, with all the time in the world to pick his spot. We fell apart after the goal and should have been 2-0 down before Sessegnon's wonder strike, which was totally out of keeping with the general dross on display.
Stanley were much the better and more committed side in the second half and we had Maynard-Brewer to thank for salvaging a point, especially with that outstanding double save. Ironically, we could have nicked it at the end when Kanu failed to lob their goalie, but a Charlton win would have been an injustice on the balance of play, much as it would have delighted us.
It's hard to find any positives after yet another inept display, although I suppose it's another faltering step towards 50 points and safety and it maintains the 7 point differential between us and Stanley (although that team has bottle and I think that Coleman will steer them to safety in any event). The draw avoids a fourth consecutive home defeat and our younger players, Maynard-Brewer, Ness and Campbell all emerged with credit - the rest of the side were pretty poor, including even Dobbo and JRS. Blackett-Taylor and Payne had some good moments but they are not 90 minute players and almost invariably fade out of games.
Hector was pretty useless and, after Ness' substitution, he and Thomas made an almost comical central defensive partnership. Kilkenny was almost invisible in midfield and, whilst we're short on numbers in that area, I really don't understand why Holden keeps playing him. Our recruitment has been terrible, even allowing for the very limited budget since the catastrophic signings of Kirk and Aneke last season. One player that did impress yesterday was Tommy Leigh, Accrington's attacking midfield player - they picked him up for a nominal, undisclosed fee from Bognor Regis, which shows what can be achieved with good scouting. Granted we signed Ness from the Met Police side, but we simply have to do better. By my calculations, we shelled out over £2 million in the last two years on DJ, Stockley, Fraser, Aneke, Kirk and Lavelle, which is huge for a League 1 club and the return has been pretty dismal.
Some on here are blaming DH for poor players brought in during the last window, but did he have a lot of say on which players came in. I know he said he wanted to trim the squad and be honest do we miss those that have gone.
