Diawara nearly gone ?? (with Diawara quotes)

edited August 2007 in General Charlton
from setanta :

Souleymane Diawara claims he has reached an agreement with Bordeaux and will leave relegated Charlton in the next 48 hours.

Senegal international Diawara failed to impose himself during a troublesome year at The Valley, but he has been offered an escape route by French giants Bordeaux.

Les Girondins coach Laurent Blanc is desperate to secure the services of the centre back in order to strengthen his defence, which has been handicapped by Carlos Henrique's knee injury.

"The hardest part of the deal has been done," Diawara told football365.fr.

"We have found a good agreement with Bordeaux. I am happy it has been done quickly. Now Charlton and Bordeaux have to agree.

"I am very happy because I have talked to the coach. Bordeaux's project is something very interesting. Their interest in me is an honour."

Diawara declares he made an error by joining Charlton, but claims he does not regret it.

"You have to make errors to learn. I wanted to play in another league, the English league. But I shouldn't have joined Charlton.

"It has been difficult because they changed the coach three times. The coach that wanted me (Iain Dowie) had been sacked," Diawara said.

"I won't say that I regret coming here. It was an opportunity that I chose, that is it. It is my fault, I accept it, and there are no problems."

  • Well that its then. Get rid. Doesn't sound like a player that wants to be here, or committed to getting us back up.

    Shame though.
  • If this is true then isn't the deal being made back to front? Surely Charlton should agree a fee with Bordeaux and then the player agrees personal terms?

I know he's trying to be magnanimous but I don't really like what he's saying. It's funny how when a team gets relegated it's never any of the players' fault. If there was any mistake made it was Dowie paying ludicrously over the odds for him.
  • What a balls up last year was.
  • but ...
LINK: Pardew blasts Blanc over defender talk
[cite]Pardew said:[/cite] "I always think it's incorrect for technical directors or managers of other clubs to talk about players who are under contract elsewhere. It's unsettling and it's unfair. "Souleyman Diawara has become an important part of what we've done here pre-season. It would be a blow if we lost him."
  • agree. Same with Fortune for me. Is happy just to play now and then, no great ambition, too happy with his lot. We need hungry players who want to play and better themselves. Going to be a busy few days for Reg and Co.
  • exactly PITL. This is yet another case of everything being agreed with the player, and the club then being bullied into selling at a lower level.

Hope we hold firm price wise.
  • I have read this thread with great interest as it seems Mr Pardew is now a bIg Fan & does not want him leaving.
  • Just before the season starts letting Fortune and Diawarra go we havnt had a stable squad for about 2 years now !!

i trust in Pards but he is not a miracle worker.

Whilst we are haggling over a fee I can't see anything wrong with the player and the other Club agreeing terms. If they can't then agreeing a fee is immaterial. Blackburn and Ipswich took six weeks haggling to agree a fee for Jeffers and after all that couldn't agree personal terms. What a waste of time. Saying that the two Clubs would have to be close to agreeing a fee as if they are miles apart then they might never agree. With what Diawara has said it's gonna happen now just a case of when. We've seen it all before.
  • It's one of the things in football these days that really really grates with me.

Unscrupulous agents and thick money grabbing mercenary footballers who've no intention of fulfilling any of the obligations they sign up to in their contract other than collecting their astronomical pay cheques. As soon as something doesn't suit them any more, even if it is of their own making, they tout themselves about, hold their current club to ransom with their strops and 'player power' and screw them over yet again.

Never sure if I'm just looking back with rose tinted glasses but oh for some players with scruples like Kins, Brownie and Robbo! (There's always Sir Chris of Powell of course. I'd happily keep him on the playing staff 'til he's 58).

I disagree Large - I think it is a problem.

I think it puts the selling club under more pressure as the buyers have basically bagged their player already it takes negotiating power away from us. We all know there's basically no way Charlton can fully back out of this deal now as they'll be left with a player who desperately wants to be somewhere else and would be effectively worthless. If I'm selling you my house I'm not going to let you come in and redecorate before we've agreed a fee!

The buying club should meet the selling club's valuation before being able to speak to the player. End of.

Agreed, get rid of Faye and Bent also, I've changed my mind on Cole would rather see Dickson get a chance, had enough of all these idiots now, lets get some proper characters in who want to play for the club....if they exist now!
  • I'm more concerned about the short-term. Its essential we get a decent start to the league so we aren't playing catch up with the top through the season.

I wasn't 100% on what we have filling the centre back positions before this news, i'm even less sure without Diawara.

Did De Zeuw get fixed up anywhere on a short-term deal ?
  • Agree with both of you. Nug - I'm sick of these idiots as well.

AFKA - I'm also very concerned with our centre of defence. Was before this and even more so now.
  • Time for some loan deals. Thing is they would not off had a pre season with the rest of the players. Last season mistakes is doing my heed in wheres the pills.
  • If this is a done deal, why are we also looking to offload Fortune?
  • Ketters will be playing centre back if we don't hurry up and sort it out!

look at sunderlands start last season they were shocking.

de zeuw , i think, went to leicester
  • Diawara is going that is obvious.

We therefore need to keep Fortune. He may not be a worldbeater but he is committed to the Club, playing through a broken toe last season, and will be adequate for the championship.

The jury is still out on Bougy for me and in any event he will be off to the African Nations Cup probably. McCarthy and Semeldo(?spelling) are also unproven.

At least with Fortune we know what we've got and he is reliable.

My post was on the basis that CAFC have given permission for tals between Diawara and Bordeaux. If they havn't then it's an illegal approach and an alltogether different matter. Assuming we have then agreeing a fee must be close.

that's just daft ... would leave us without cover after Christmas ;-)

In this league playing catch-up ain't too bad, look at Sunderland and even Palarse a couple of years ago. Dowie snapped up DeZeuuz (sp?) on a free. Sign Riggott from Boro.

Well I'm reading between the lines a bit but Pardew didn't seem too happy with it - didn't give the impression that we'd let him go and talk to them. I'm sure there's a grey area with regard to what constitutes tapping up and what is just 'fact finding' by an agent.

He probably still hasn't bothered to learn English properly yet.

So his quotes may not be 100% accurate.

Shame if he does go , could see him being one of the best CB's in the CCC. But if he seriously want's to go then like someone said he can pack his gloves and bounce off back to France to eat his frogs legs misuer.
  • Stoke site says Fortune has travelled up for talks.
  • Anyone know if Aswad Thomas is any good?

He'll be getting a game in the first team at this rate. Either that or Sankofa will play centre half.

Talking of Sankofa is he injured? he doesn't seem to have featured much.
  • What is the current state of the clubs finance there seems to be a lot coming in at a fast rate ?

Sankofa injured I believe. Assume same must be said of Gibbo and Sam. Dropping like flies.

Thomas is a decent enough kid but nowhere near the first team. Read somewhere yesterday that Tanska was off to Burnley on loan. Maybe not now !!
  • I thought Tanska was no longer with us, returned from whence he came?
