I had mostly drifted away from watching England play Test cricket due to time difference and how bloody miserable it was to watch under Root and Bayliss who claimed they were trying to play aggressive but sensible cricket.Covered End said:

This team under Stokes has me setting an alarm for 4 in the morning so I can get up and watch a five day Test match that ended up being a coin flip.
There are four coin flips left. It’ll be tough to win three of them but at least we all know we’re in the series. I can barely remember the last time we felt genuinely competitive against them lot in the five day format.1 -
I agree with you re: selecting Foakes, by the way.Almost tempted to bring him in for a half baked Moeen and go all in with Root as the main spin option.5

We didn't lose that test match on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday we lost it in the last hour on Tuesday.
If we had won Sydney Life would have having a melt down about the defensive fields and low scoring rate.2 -

Both teams made mistakes.
England were too reckless, the declaration, some of the shot selection. Root for example should have got another century in the second innings, but threw it away. Australia on the other hand were too passive, they allowed England a ridiculous number of singles on Day 1 for example, giving us a flyer without even have to take risks.
England had a bowling attack which was rusty - Anderson, injured - Stokes, or completely lacking "match hardness" for red ball cricket - Moeen. And gave away a ridiculous number of no balls. Plus a rusty keeper who shelled loads of chances.
Australia also had a rusty bowler in Hazelwood, but you feel were more hardened than England, and even then their best 2 players both failed.1 -
In 2019 we were hammered at Edgbaston, then were the better team at Lord's in a rain affected draw.1

What some are pointing out is to declare when your 2nd all time highest batter is on 118, the pitch is dead and no movement, declaring was the wrong option which ultimately meant we did not get at least a draw
I am far more disappointed in the lack of discipline around no balls bowled and dropped catches / missed stumpings.
If we had batted even for another 15 mins and scored 15 runs, we likely would have at least drawn that game.
The dropped catches and missed stumpings by Bairstow were also the result of a poor decision to leave out Foakes.
We lost that game because of bad decision making, more than poor cricket.0 -

I don't disagree with any of this. But I think this is a process, a total change in philosophy and game psychology - I think the end goal of where we are trying to get to the way we play is a game changer, this is the first real test of it we have had after what has been basically a dazzling success so far - that doesn't mean we should throw it all out because the best in the world just scraped a win against us.Covered End said:

Before this match started I fancied the Aussies to win a very close match because as brilliant as Baz ball is to watch I felt because a draw is a total anathema to the present mindset England might push their luck with a declaration or Joe Root might believe he's Kevin Pietersen and rush down the wicket and get stumped when in great form 🧐

The Aussies just had too many overs to get the runs and I admit I didn't expect them to have 67 overs after the washed out first session.
If You live by the sword you will die by the sword if you get too Cavalier against a dangerous opponent.
Declaring on day 1 of a 5 day test when Root was going so well looks a poor decision when another 30 possible runs could've made such a difference.
The no balls and dropped catches didn't help and having 3 bowlers not really match fit because of knee, groin and spinning finger for Ben, Jimmy and Mo made the taking of 20 wickets unlikely.
The Aussies will keep their bowlers fresh, Mitchell Starc coming in, and the number one and two batsman in the world last year in Marnus Labuschagne and Smithy will go up a gear from now on.
If you are going to die on a hill the Ashes hill wouldn't be the one of choice.
Great entertainment and there is no turning back now but the Aussies will go for the jugular with renewed confidence.

what makes me laugh is, if our two top guys had failed in both innings everyone would be calling for them to be dropped or calling them bottle jobs.... but when its the Aussies its "oh they are gonna go up a gear and batter in the centuries now"

I'm still bemused why knowledgeable cricket fans calling out the poor match losing decisions, is interpreted as let's go to scoring at 2 an over and stop playing attacking cricket.
You can play attacking cricket without making match gifting declarations, leaving out Foakes which cost us how many runs with Bairstow's missed stumpings and catches, (bringing back a "spinner" who hadn't played red ball cricket for years).
Poor decisions lost us that game. There are always dropped catches in the outfield and no balls bowled, even if there were a few more than average.8 -
Such a shame but there's a difference between being attacking and positive but the declaration and root's stumping was reckless and we have to have a bowler with more pace oh we have to have a replacement for Moeen...but we nearly won ..what a game of cricket !2

With this team from that position on Day 1 we’ve thrown the game away. And we now have to likely win three of the next four. Have really shot ourselves in the foot - chances of regaining the Ashes are very slim nowCallumcafc said:

Are you serious? You mean that we would call for the two players ranked numbers one and two in the world in Test cricket to be dropped? i'm literally only taking an interest because we are taking it to them and not just trying to scrape past or lose by an innings like we always have done. Call it reckless, full of mistakes, whatever - I think some of you lot need to kinda get over it or just don't watch if you don't like it. The way we are playing is not a sudden shocking turn of events is it?1 -

Harmison bowling one wide did not cause a 5-0 defeat and even in another world it was still a bowler bowling a rank bad ball. It wasn't conscious deliberate poor decision making.0 -
