Do people think if a serious amount of money was available for naming rights over The Valley that successive regimes would have rejected it? Regimes with such a strong attraction to the club’s traditions and history as Duchatelet’s? Or the spivs?
Charlton struggle to get six figures for shirt sponsorship. Look at the matchday ads on the new boards and figure how many are contras or freebies. Look at the empty kit sponsorship pages in the programme. The market isn’t there for Charlton in L1.
Sure, someone like Ashley can plaster the ground with their own ads, but I seriously doubt it is worth any significant amount in cash terms.23

I think we get too agitated about re-naming the Valley. Firstly, we can always call it the Valley and secondly, it isn't a change of name by deed poll and lasts only as long as somebody pays for it. There are bigger issues to occupy our thoughts/ concerns.18

Same and I couldn’t even tell you what the official sponsored name is at the moment.Cafc43v3r said:

No matter what any new owner renamed The Valley as, it would still be the Valley to us & no doubt all/most of footballWSS said:I know it's mental saying this but I think Mike Ashley would be excellent for us. We'd not agree with all of his decisions (renaming the stadium) but I think we'd end up in a much better place than we have been for a few years.
 Can't believe I typed that.
I live in Bradford before someone says they have never heard anyone call it anything 1 1

Well I suppose moving to another owner with a track record of paying peanuts for staff and treating them like shit would be familiar.1

But there is no evidence that of those potentially interested, Ashley is one of them. In fact we have been told he isn't.2

We would simply be jumping from a sinking ship to a burning one.
His net spend on transfers was something like £3m a year while others spent millions, and while they were getting a load in TV money etc, plus he used them for however much free advertising.
He was like a Glazers-lite type in that respect.
He appointed the likes of Kinnear, McClaren, Pardew (recently sacked by L1 Southampton) etc. They got relegated twice under his ownership.
There are worse owners, but there are far better too.Maybe it’s not Newcastle that are the deluded idiots.
I've said above there are a lot worse owners, but there are a lot better too.
He didn't keep a club the size of us in the Premier League for years on end. He kept a club that by rights should probably be there every season (and had been for 15 years) in the league for most of the seasons he was there, getting relegated twice using their own money and not his for the most part.
I don't get why thinking a guy who took money out of a club, appointed some terrible managers there etc was all sunshine and light is that deluded.3

"Kept them in the prem" - after the big 6, Newcastle are probably the next biggest club in the country. A club of their size should arguably be finishing top 10 every year, but he spent so little they were relegated twice.Stu_of_Kunming said:

Yes he got them back up, but even then you could argue a club with 50k fans, some half decent PL players and PL parachute payments should be pissing the championship anyway. Norwich do it every other year, so getting Newcastle back up is not an achievement.
I accept his ambitions (or lack of) with Newcastle would be completely different to what he'd need to do with us, but i'm simply putting a case forward of why Newcastle fans hated him, which many can't seem to understand.
Having said that though, i'd take him as our owner now simply because he'd have no choice but to invest and that is a million times better than what we're doing right now.2

We haven't even opened up a takeover thread yet and some are vilifying Ashley. Unbelievable! I'd be amazed if he came anywhere near us, but apparently he might take a look, so there's hope there.
Any prospective new owner attending a game at the Valley this season is unlikely to be impressed by the attendances. As TS did, you buy for potential but have to operate within restrictions that are currently in place, such as the player wage budget driven by turnover. Unfortunately, as ours is relatively low at present, whoever takes over will know it's not likely that they can effect a short-term fix and that fans will be impatient for success.
L1 is killing us! Beggars can't be choosers and, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.5

Given that we have absolutely zero say in who Thomas sells to, I can't say I would be disappointed if it turns out to be Ashley when you think of the possible alternatives.
Anyway, it seems a bit foolish debating the merits of a potential owner who has not given any indication he's interested.
Edit. Just read scohams post above that suggests he is interested. Go for it Mike2

He called me when I bought our season tickets. He said: "Welcome to the club" which I found a bit of a strange line considering I've been supporting Charlton for decades. Maybe I should be the one welcoming him to the club.killerandflash said:I had a call from the club today (and a subsequent email) from someone called Christos Apostolopoulos, "Commercial Sales Executive", a contact for season ticket holders. And trying to promote packages as my birthday is later on this month, for which I politely declined - just watching us play MK Dons on the 25th will be bad enough!
 Is this someone new?1

Loads of people have declared interest in buying Charlton in the past.
We always get browsed...then they either usually pull out and think nah not worth the agro, or they do buy us and a year later make it clear that it was a huge mistake.
My way of trying to brighten the mood this morning

Newcastle haven't won the league since the 20s, and haven't won a major trophy since the 50s. Why does a big stadium entitle them to success?

No one said it entitles them to success, but if you're an established PL club (as they were for 15+ years before their first relegation under Ashley) with 50k fans turning up each week, then as fans i think you're entitled to expect better than a net spend of around 10m a season. And even that only increased in the last 3-4 years of his ownership as he realised he needed to invest a bit more to keep the club value up when he was looking to sell.Croydon said:Newcastle haven't won the league since the 20s, and haven't won a major trophy since the 50s. Is it really that much different to us wanting a new owner because TS is cutting costs and won't invest in the team and we're sat below the likes of Exeter, Shrewsbury, Port Vale, Fleetwood, Accrington and Cheltenham?
As fans we don't think we're entitled to success (we are Charlton after all), but generally i think we expect to have a decent team and be better than those clubs i've named above. And it was the same for Newcastle when they were in a relegation battle, sat below the likes of Swansea, Watford and Bournemouth.2
