Post-match Thread: Charlton Athletic vs Shrewsbury Town | Saturday 23rd April 2022

Shrewsbury Town the visitors to the Valley for the final home game of the season. Little was on the line for either club, except a bit of pride as we see out this disappointing season. The Addicks started brightly, dominating possession and creating chances in the first fifteen minutes, but the foot came off the gas on twenty minutes, allowing Shrewsbury back into it. The first half finished with neither side finding the quality needed to open the scoring.

The second half was quite a bit better, but the Addicks took a little time to get going. We soaked up Shresbury’s limited pressure, but it was MacGillivray that kept us in it with back to back saves. Our two goals came from set pieces, first with Stockley and then from Chuks, who came on midway through the second half. Wunderkind Daniel Kanu came on in the final few minutes of extra time to make his Charlton debut. 

A clean sheet and three points on Upbeats Day, with Yann Kermorgant in the studio, and his son a mascot. Not a classic, but a solid win to send us up the table a bit.

The last 2 results don't alter the fact that this has been an utter shite season. 
Do not be fooled Tommy boy this squad needs major surgery. 
As an aside if Wimbledon go down we will not have a London derby next season. 
That's the first time I can ever remember that happening. 
Anyway happy St.Georges day everyone.

More turgid crap. Shame Gilbey isn't out of contract, stealing a living. Morgan not much better except one decent corner. Massive overhaul needed if we want to even make the play offs next season, will we get it though?

Cambridge , currently on 57 points, also could overtake us if they beat Cheltenham and we crumble at Ipswich.

Aneke is actually a better headerer (to use Bow's English) than Stockley for attempts at goal. 

Gilbey looks like he'll come good next season. If not, I'm sure the season after.

Yep, many of us have already forgotten that we didn't even have a fit striker for half a dozen games.

They also didn't start the season with 2 and half like we did either....

Although to be fair, Chuks was pushed into playing his first game back after that long layoff, with only 2 days training.

We have some imbelic embarrassing fans behind the goal. My brother said last week that the Morecambe keeper was getting constant unwarranted dogs abuse from the chavs all game. He said it was embarrassing and unrelated to the actual game.  So presume the same muppets today. Other fans should be less hasty to boo their keeper till we know what was said/thrown.

Part of me feels with the brand of football JJ seems to want us to play, we will inevitably just fall short again next season.

However, when you see how a player with the quality of Aneke can change the game (granted he is coming on in the final minutes against ragged defences), then maybe if we do manage to bring some better quality through the door - promotion all of a sudden does not seem to distant.

Someone in the CE Lower accused by their keeper of throwing something at him, ref stopped the game to talk to the officials and stewards checked CCTV etc. and whilst all that was happening their keeper, captain and a couple of other players weren't helping the cause by coming and having words with fans and pointing at a few individuals. Couldn't see if anyone actually got hauled out for it, but once the game finally resumed we scored the second to put it to bed anyway

Thanks. Sitting down in the West couldn’t see anything except a lot of pointing from the keeper.

First half poor, second half better, but as mentioned above by @blackpool72, 2 wins in a row can’t mask a very mediocre season.  There are elements to build on, but I remain unconvinced and unless we see a lot of surgery in the summer, I feel we’ll be in an around where we are now or slightly higher.

at half time if you’d had watched this as a neutral and you asked them if Shrewsbury looked like a team capable of getting promoted next season, you’d have said not without a lot of work.  So given how average we looked you’d say exactly the same about us.  We’re slightly better than them.  

I get in these games people can quite rightly say it has ‘an end of season feel to it’, but for me, the first half was quite typical of what we’ve served up all season pretty much.  

Good crosses and finishes for both goals, that’s certainly where Stockley is at his most effective, but at times I was looking at his movement and it reminds me of an angry commuter pushing and shoving on a crowded tube train.  Gilbey has the touch of man that needs his playing surface to be the size of Heathrow runway, he’s the type of player we cannot start next season and expect to seriously compete for promotion.

I would imagine the fact Lee has failed to make the bench for the last two games suggest you won’t see him again, which is a positive.

Over to TS, Gallen, TS jnr and Jackson to deliver in the market in the summer.  

I’m not at Ipswich and unlikely to be watching it, so fair play to all who are, today was the last I’ll see of them.  Been a long, hard season and very glad it’s over.  Hope everyone has a great summer
