I am not sure what is to be positive about?
What is there to be negative about? Is he better qualified and experienced than the last guy to have a similar role at the club.....grant basey
who would you have appointed?
He was Director of Performance at a club who have underperformed since he took the role, last season finished 20th in league 2 and this season are 19th, and last week they sacked him.
Does that say 'this is a good appointment' to you?
Did he pick the team? Colchester have been poor for a few years now.
Will sacking him now make Colchester good?
the point I'm trying to make is that we know very little about him. 10 years ago, this forum would have been full of welcome messages, now it's just moan moan moan without justification.

I am quite pleased that on several occasions I have mentioned how surprisingly decent the development set up has been in recent times at Colchester. Every season they give our U23’s a decent game, and even recently didn’t their U18’s beat ours 5-1? My view is unscientific and based on personal opinion, but even though the Colchester United first team has not been doing well the past couple of seasons De Souza has not been the manager and their club has an honest developmental system generally. I don’t know how this will work out, but decrying the appointment because of Colchester’s status is hardly forensic analysis.
Why the feck are people moaning about the new Club Secretary (Dangermouse etc.)
Why the feck does it matter if he's come from Non-League or the Premier League
Or like I said when he was appointed, are people now trying to pretend as though they know what he does

My only thought on this point is that it feeds into the bigger picture of calibre of individuals we're appointing. Take any position from chef, groundsman or fitness coach all the way through to star striker, if you're being paid by Manchester City it's generally because you're good at what you do, if you're working for some non-league club with a next-to-zero budget, it's probably because a better club doesn't want you. For what it's worth I don't know enough about Club Secretary role to know how important that comparison is, but the fact remains our last four appointments have no experience of our league or higher except for small stints in Brentford maybe years ago... It's not ambitious - that's the issue. To be honest, if Sandgaard came out and said yes budgets have to be lower this year for whatever reason at least people's expectations can be set, but we're still getting the Premier League aim but assigning bargian basement individuals club positions. If we're looking for a new coach, lets look at Peterborough, Luton, Derby even and pay one of their coaches well to share some of their insights rather than gambling on someone who FAILED (judging by all reactions) at a League Two club.

For the last 3 years de Souza was the first teams Director of Performance, he wasn't managing their academy.
We're 13th in League one. We aren't exactly the most attractive of clubs at the moment and that will also shine through with the calibre of players we attract. Nicking a performance coach who was at Colchester sounds about right to me

Can I put myself in for throw ins , I have a long throw , not quite as hard as MS’s shot but decent enough for pub standard football and I spent a huge amount of my career on the subs bench , so I could probably have a dual roll

Former Colchester United player Wayne Brown isn't new to the Interim Head Coach position, having stood on the touchline for the club twice before.
Manager of Maldon and Tiptree, Brown has a strong connection with the U's, with a good number of Colchester United's youngsters spending time on loan at the Jammers over the last few seasons.
As a player, Brown played for Ipswich Town, Watford, and Hull City to name a few, including over 100 games for Colchester United across three seperate periods at the club.

The comments around the club secretary border on some of the most ridiculous I have ever read on this forum. Why on earth would it matter where he has come from so long as he can do the job. The idea we can't be happy with his appointment because we haven't poached him from a Premier League outfit is lunacy.
Everyone has been crying out for more appointments to be made to the coaching staff, then when they get made everyone immediately starts criticising someone they have never heard of before. Not one person on this board will have any knowledge of whether De Souza is a good coach or not. Not many on this board will have heard of him before today.
We are obviously going to be recruiting from clubs in and around League One/Two and Non-League because we are a League One club. The only reason coaches would come to this club from the Premier League or Championship is money.
And would we want people at the club who are just here for the pay-cheque? Or would we prefer people who actually want to be here and will see it as a really exciting opportunity?

I don't mind bringing in a "development" coach but by Christ they at least should have some pedigree. Didnt fans suggest bringing in Defoe the other month & as part of him joining us he would be able to develop the youngsters with their finishing. At least there you could see the reasoning - at this rate you might as well hire me as a motivational speaker !

The point De Souza makes here is that you can’t truly say that you are focusing on making the best decisions for the development of young players if all you care about is winning an U18s match, for example.
The example he gave is the U16 and U18 sides have a game on the same day. Is it better for a decent U16 player to start for the U16 (focus on development) or stick him on the U18 bench (focus on winning) on the off chance he gets 20 minutes in the second half?
Can a club that consistently chooses the second option truly say that they focus on player development?
It’s a similar conundrum to those who insist on getting Kanu on the bench for the first team rather than banging in the goals for the U23s. When the coaches agree that he’s ready to play mens, he will play. But until then, it’s better for his development to not be travelling up and down the country to get 5 minutes here or there against Lincoln or Shrewsbury.
We are a league one club. As far as I can see we will attract people who are at clubs at a similar level or those who are in junior roles at clubs higher up the pyramid.
The second group of people will come with little experience and have to learn on the job which isn’t something we can necessarily afford.
The criticism of the Dangerfield appointment is bizarre. He has an operational role that he has done before.
This De Souza appointment is more worthy of discussion and interrogation. I’m interested in the role he will play and whether this is a position other clubs have within their set up. Until that’s clear and we have had time to see the impact he has then I will reserve judgment.
Steve Avory was a PE teacher. Anthony Hayes a business graduate. Both have made a positive contribution to the club.
Also of interest to me is that both these appointments have previous connections with Brentford, a club Sandgaard had publicly championed as a model of how a club should be run.
Know nothing about the guy but the cheap option would be to appoint nobody rather than an experienced coach, which is what he is.
The video about "winning isn't everything AT YOUTH LEVEL" seems to fit in with the existing CAFC philosophy of focusing on long term development as well as creating a winning mentality, something we seem to be good at.
Fans regularly moan that a player snatches at chances, can't play a long pass out of defence, doesn't know how to cross a ball, etc etc so we appoint a coach to work one to one with players in order to improve them and that is somehow a bad thing.
Didn’t John Cartwright used to be hammered for saying that winning didn’t manner in youth development, and was responsible for Bowyer and Parker’s early development at the club.

To be honest, if Sandgaard came out and said yes budgets have to be lower this year for whatever reason at least people's expectations can be set, but we're still getting the Premier League aim but assigning bargian basement individuals club positions. Surley if he is looking to sell you would not be appointing more staff and paying off JJ and Euell.
