Summer 2022 transfer rumours (Gilbey loan confirmed p513, a signing falls through last minute p541)

Disheartening reading Garners report about unlikely to sign a striker. Personally like many here I think it's essential. He says he expects players from all positions to chip in with goals... despite totally outplaying Wednesday we didn't look like scoring apart from CBT's one on one. Didn't really test their keeper greatly.
i read elsewhere that Pompey aren't in for Gilbey which is a shame as it would I'm sure help if the striker issue is purely money and squad size based.I'd still, as I said at the end of the season, be taking a punt on Stockton. At worst it could be as disappointing as Kirk , but somehow I think it would be an upgrade in this system on Stockley.0 -
Two ways to read Garner’s comments imo. 1) We’ve spent our budget and need to make space before we sign someone or 2) we’re talking to someone and that is a message to them or their agent or club that there’s a deal to be done but not at the price/wage they are currently asking.

I prefer the second option, but not sure that really works.😉Exiled_Addick said:Two ways to read Garner’s comments imo. 1) We’ve spent our budget and need to make space before we sign someone or 2) we’re talking to someone and that is a message to them or their agent or club that there’s a deal to be done but not at the price/wage they are currently asking.0 -
anyway, looking forward to tonight, come on you reds3

Still a LB & Striker short.
That's my Michael Owen comment for the day.

Notwithstanding that our LB has probably been our best outfield player so far, only really challenged by our RB2

Seem to be a lot of one line negative comments on here recently, from posters I haven't really seen before.... Weird26

If we don’t get in that striker and centre back we need it’s a pity because the foundation’s of a very decent team are already built. I have to say though that I thought that when Garner came in with his footballing ethos that it could well take two or three windows to get it right. From where we were in terms of players when Jacko left we are much better equipped to play Garnerball but I definitely think it was always a bridge to far to get it right in one short summer.9

We just have to be patient. I suspect there isn’t a club in the country that feels there isn’t more business to do. Like it or not, the way the transfer window works, some of the last business is done right at the end.ShootersHillGuru said:If we don’t get in that striker and centre back we need it’s a pity because the foundation’s of a very decent team are already built. Feeling like we have a couple to come and a couple to go to complete the puzzle is such a better place than before.
For me, the bigger issue in football is that the transfer window needs to shut much sooner so that we don’t all have a month of the season before it closes. Should finish no later than a week after all the leagues start,2 -
Do they read the SLP then ?Exiled_Addick said:Two ways to read Garner’s comments imo. 1) We’ve spent our budget and need to make space before we sign someone or 2) we’re talking to someone and that is a message to them or their agent or club that there’s a deal to be done but not at the price/wage they are currently asking.1 -
I said weeks ago our transfer business was done, as soon as Leaburn had a good pre-season Tommy sniffed we had solved our striker problems thus saving any money on a signing.
Leaburn fits right in with Tommy's brief of a good mix of youngsters and experienced pro's
We all know this will not work and that we do need a striker however prepare to be disappointed.3 -

I still think a striker will come in. It might not be the one we’ve been chasing but we’ll get a loan if not. Unless money is no object signing players is not an exact science.eaststandmike said:

Sounds like you need a secretary to assist you in your obvious hectic work load, maybe they could keep you updated...or of course read it like the rest of us poor sods have to...sillav nitram said:PWR
5 additional pages since I last looked, what are we arguing about, just so I can be up to date?
Is it Garners admission we’re unlikely to add a striker?

Hope you are right because it is plain to see we need one, but.................................as I say will not be shocked if we carry on with what we haveShootersHillGuru said:

It can work but where I think the owner is misguided is that he doesn't understand that it doesn't work until it works. By that I don't mean a young player showing a lot of potential, but that player becoming an indespensable part of the team. There is a degree of nurturing required with most players and it is unfair to put too much pressure on them.eaststandmike said:I said weeks ago our transfer business was done, as soon as Leaburn had a good pre-season Tommy sniffed we had solved our striker problems thus saving any money on a signing.

We also have our views on this one striker system in terms of what it does for Stockley's game, but what does it do for Leaburn's. It is much harder for a young inexperienced player to lead the line on their own IMO. We haven't seen much yet but what we have seen suggests Leaburn does better when he comes on with Stockley, playing on the right but when he comes in he becomes a striker much better than Kirk or CBT does. Maybe because he is a striker, and admittedly, they are better wide players.0 -
Is Mick Lynch available?

I first mentioned him in January after Chesterfield had played Chelsea in the FA Cup. I was at the game at Stamford Bridge.Sambcafc said:Kabongo Tshimanga
Tshimanga of Chesterfield and Hall of Chelsea both extremely impressive and two players I said at the time I think we should look at this summer.
Hall can play left centre back and left back, an area we need. He can even play in midfield.
Tshimanaga last season had his season cut short due to a leg break, without that happening, Chesterfield would have probably gone up. Sometimes players need to drop down to come back again. He was at Milton Keynes under Robinson years ago and Chesterfield signed him from Boreham Wood last summer. His record over the last 4 years has been fantastic. He's a player on the up and will be hungry for the opportunity. I think that's better than signing a young player on loan who has to fight his way in front of Stockley.
Would be happy if those two were to come in and be our last signings of the window.5 -
This is exactly what I mean... Seems like an agenda, wondering if it's one person setting up multiple accounts.TheAddicks4Ever said:What no striker ?6 -

Quite possibly... That said I do know lots of my friends who aren't on forums feel the same (and it's not the usual groupthink). We know Stockley has goals in him, but when he doesn't look like scoring in this system with three games of heavy possession, it's entirely possible lots of people have noticed that. I for one enjoyed a few of the runs Leaburn was making against Wednesday, but just don't think he's ready yet to be a serious contender for our central striking position. Someone like Simpson or Stockton would be better suited to that 'get in behind' style of play and we have the technical players to execute that with the likes of Fraser, Morgan and Payne. Would be a no brainer to me to at least bring in one striker who isn't a target man to at least rotate the game when Stockley is being marked out of it.Redhenry said:

I think this is a good point. Where Stockley can struggle is when he has a couple of players on him and that is an issue when there is nobody else to take the strain and help him. He will find it easier in some games more than others and an option would be good when it isn't working. I still think Stockley will get a decent number and finish our top scorer as it stands. In a team that doesn't seem to have the circa 70 goals it will probably need in it, it seems destructive to take Stockley's contribution away from that already challenging total.Vfrf said:
