He said we’re short of defenders with Egbo being out injured….so full back cover would seem more likely.

Completely get the early concerns about O’Connell but hopefully he will come good. If not we have Lavelle, Ness, Elerewe (on recall) and even Clare as an option to play there instead. I would also like another CB (bearing in mind Inniss could breakdown at any min) but we atleast have more options there than we have at full back. If Sessegnon gets injured we have to play a winger (Claydon) there and if Clare gets injured we have to play a CB at RB (Ness or Barker etc).
Badly need a left footed centre back and a left footed LB.
Read that as Baldy lol. Thought who’s he talking to😂
  • Garner said we were well down the line with getting two players in ???
    Wonder who these are ?

Very little chance of getting both I'd say, more likely to get one left footed defender who can cover both in a pinch.
Yeah, agreed. Sessegnon says he’s equally happy playing on the left or right.
Such a shame Egbo is injured, he’s potentially an exciting player, although Clare has done very well at RB.

Anyway back to talking about transfers instead of budgets.  We know we are looking to upgrade at wide forward/winger and fullback,  my biggest fear is that we aren’t looking at another center half.  I just don’t think some combination of innis, O’Connell and Lavelle is good enough to get promoted.
Garner mentioned bringing in one or two attacking options, I don’t think he confirmed we’re after a full back? I think a CB is more likely given we only have three senior players there.
And perhaps he'll be a CB who can also comfortably  cover at LB?

You’d think so, but that doesn’t fit with the idea of attacking full backs.

Clayden may well play more than many expect, and like Clare we shouldn’t be fixed to the idea that his best position is in midfield. It’s not uncommon for wingers to convert to full back.

Deary me, I nearly forgot Paul Smyth in that 4-4 draw with Rochdale!

I had forgotten it. Thanks a lot.

I’m hoping the likes of jfc and gilbey have got the message and move on - goal scorer needed anc we need to throw everything at it
What message?  That a load of people on a forum are suggesting they go to Orient, Wimbledon or Gillingham?

We are going to use 4 CMs every game, maybe 5 in most. To only have 5 would be as silly as having 7.  If they aren't happy that's a different matter but I would be supprised if both went and we didn't bring someone else in.
  • Longer the transfer saga drags on, the more expectation he's gonna come with

If he doesn't hit the ground running, then there will be instant comments of: "What was the fuss about"

I mean just look at the reaction that O'Connell has had after just two games.

Agree with Golfie, what is the hold up, sounds like the lad is being poorly advised when he should focus on his Football... Rather than his bank balance, if he's good enough (and has that opinion himself), then that should take of itself later down the line.

    I'm already there.

OConnell and Inniss were excellent second half on Saturday .. takes time to build partnership
  • Was told today club still very confident we will get JRS, just needs to sign his palace contract and it will happen.
He must be a slow reader.....he's had the new contract for over a  week how.
You live in your own little world don’t you?
As said above, he's a youngster who's not really broken through to the first team, not bloody Mo Salah. He should be signing an improved contract without haste & getting on with his life.

I couldn't give two shits if the lad signs it or not, but its holding up OUR plans for OUR season.
Do you know it is improved?
  • Maybe we are just waiting for Ricki Saki to grow a few inches so he can pass the CL height test.

Because we have lots of CMs we've tended to stick several on the bench, but that won't necessarily be the case going forward. I'd imagine we'd prefer to sub the front 3 to get fresh legs in attack, and one of the full backs too, if they've been running up and down the flank a lot.

Surley JRS is one of them , the other is probably a left back

Indeed, so we either wait for the young lad or look for the next option.

5 CM's would be a huge risk though, only an injury or two away from being in real trouble. 6 is sufficient, especially with the likes of Henry and Clare as cover. I do think JFC is the one that will go.

If your playing 3 you want 6 in the squad though don't you?  2 for each position?

5 subs changes it some what.  But if your in the 6 you would fancy yourself to be in the 18 more often than not.

    @RedJohn
Are you going to pull this one up too?
  • I think 5 CMs would be ok, especially as we have Clare and Henry as cover. And if we end up playing more of a 4-2-3-1 then you can even include Aneke and DJ as options to play as the attacking midfielder. If we need 2 out to get 3/4 in then the risk of only having 5 CMs is worth it

I don't. Although if Gilbey is the 6th choice then I wouldn't be massively fussed. Ideally we'd keep Dobson, McGrandles, Fraser, Payne, Morgan and JFC.
  • Just thought I’d pass on that I’ve heard nothing. Make of that what you will!
Top Tip for this. Cotton buds and olive oil applied often should do the trick!

Ideally yes. But it sounds like we might not be able to bring in the 3/4 we need unless we move some players on. Getting left back, CB, winger and striker covered is more important than a 6th central midfielder staying. Hopefully we can keep JFC, lose Gilbey and bring in what we need

I'd probably just about agree with that but I can't see us signing 4 anyway. We'll sign one defender and one attacking player.
  • Will the end of the Charlton summer transfer window explode in a cacophony of riotous abandonment, greased by copious amounts of money splashed by our saviour and Brentish benefactor... OR, go off like a rather disapointing wet fart reverberating around the undercrackers of footballing lower league irrelevance?

I really don't want Henry being 6th choice because he will end up being an unused sub or left out of the 18 on the day having travelled etc and end up not playing for the 1st team or the U21s.

If he does well enough in training etc to force his way into the 18, that's different.
