It was only about 12 years ago I went to the Amex and vowed never to attend an away game within a few hours travelling as they bring the worst types out. About 300 people could have been arrested that day for homophobic chants. I also recall the casual abuse that Darren Ambrose used to get and being threatened by a fellow ‘fan’ in the covered end for picking him up on using such slurs.

You forgetting about the bottle and coin throwing at opposition players against Bolton and Accrington at home this season and the fighting between Charlton fans with each other against Accrington and Wycombe at home plus the drummer getting his nose blooded at another home game as well.

It’s not a big percentage but it is quite a big number . I don’t go to many away games now because of it .

We have just like any other club a selection of morons who are not there to support our club, and i really don't understand why some bother.
I have been to a few away games this year and depending on the opposition out come the morons in their droves. At Oxford this year i had a great seat towards the back near the centre line, not good for some of our prize pricks, 2 of them had to stand on the same seat right next to me hindering my view, and spent the whole game gesturing to the oxford fans with the usual wank and two finger signs for almost the entire game.
One of them had no idea we had pulled a goal back from a penalty.
The vast majority of fans have a great day out enjoy the game and usually have a grumble after it. Those people who choose to do otherwise should be banned for life from all grounds. How you would police that I don't know.

There is a section of society that think that "free speech" at any cost is acceptable - there are certainly people who think that calling someone a poof is "bants" and anyone who thinks it is wrong is "one of the woke PC brigade". There may even be some like that on CL. There are figures in the media and in positions of power and influence who encourage - or at the very least do not discourage - that attitude.

I've always hated us singing about the opposition, even when the songs could be deemed "appropriate".
"You're support is F*cking sh*t" "Is this a library..." "Your sister is..." "Can we play you every week..." "Your sh*t and you know you are..." "Sh*t ground, no fans..."
All of these make me cringe because everyone could reasonably be sung at us (with the exception of one part of one song (shit ground))..and invariably we let in a goal or lose when we sing how shit the other team are...
There is a very simple principle that if adopted by all would at least remove the evidence of twats (even if it didnt remove the twats themselves (they'd soon get bored)) - sing about your own team, not the opposition or opposition players.
Sadly it will never happen.
One thing that could be changed however is players celebrating in front of or making gestures in front of opposition fans. This could be easily policed. If we can give yellow cards for taking a shirt off...
The principle would be that any goal celebration has to be clearly conducted in front of the teams fans or towards the centre of the pitch - players shouldn't be subject to being hit by objects, but remove the provocation in the first place and you are some way to resolving the problem.

A percentage of society is racist, similarly a percentage of society is homophobic, take drugs, drink to the point of losing self-control, and are overly influenced by crowd behaviour and peer pressure.
A football crowd. the same as any relatively large gathering, will reflect society, and the percentages will be reflected in that crowd, including a Charlton crowd - plucky, family friendly, nicey, nicey Charlton are no different. Remove them - yes, but they will be replaced with others.

Yes, you are right. The first is not strictly illegal (the Govt. are taking steps right now to drag the Football (Offences) Act into the 21st century by updating the wording of section 3. Whereas under section 4, going on to the playing area is an offence.
The problem is that the main purpose of this legislation is to support the whole concept of banning orders for the obnoxious.
Consequently, CPS guidance to the (specialist) prosecutors and police forces is to, wherever possible, include a charge from other more effective legislation. So, for example, while throwing missiles* onto the playing area or into the crowd is an offence under the specific football-related legislation I suspect a perp is more likely to see a charge for assault also added to the indictment.
And, by the way, everyone is taking this seriously. So the CPS guidance says: Simple Cautions or Penalty Notices for Disorder will hardly ever be appropriate for football-related offences. So any pissed up moron who thinks this kind of thing is funny, might have a very different view when they realise they have just screwed up their entire future. Not that the hard-of-thinking are likely to comprehend that.
Really saddened to hear this. There has been a small but lairy minority for a while now but seems more regular and more prominent post Covid. Club needs to do more to ensure such behaviour is not accepted. Leave the tossers at Millwall.

Like maybe pay for the production of a leaflet to be issued at all grounds under their auspices? I'm not a Lineker fanboy but I think he is probably one of the last people you could label a 'casual racist' The chap has offered to house Cross Channel Asylum Seekers, supports a lot of the kick it out stuff and in my humble opinion as a white 40 something would appear to be an all inclusive type of guy.
For me if you go out to find something that offends you'll always find it.

There was a Policeman in the away end openly videoing our fans - I couldn’t believe how stupid some of the people around me were openly chanting homophobic abuse, and abuse at their goalkeeper, and the Policeman simply stood there and filmed them - they could see he was filming them, but carried on - idiots
