There is a reason why so many Welsh managers have given Gunter over 100 caps and Matthews only 14 because a Right Back needs to be a defender first which clearly Matthews cannot do !!! Please wake up to the fact that Matthews cannot defend
Have you not noticed the lack of defensive cover from the midfield. None of them track runners, ever. It's difficult to defend when you've got at least two players coming towards you, time and time again.
Matthews is infinitely better than Gunter. Whether he had been over the last ten years I don't know, but in a Charlton shirt he certainly has.
Matthews does show the player outside but the Bolton player does well to turn inside. Where was the cover inside? Just because you shown them the outside doesn't mean that that is where they will go. A proper defence will have cover in case the forward cuts inside. This team, defensively, is a shambles.
Surely our analysts and management team had picked up on that. The players would have been warned.
People can blame Matthews but he should never have been left unsupported - the inside channel should have been closed off. Somebody else didn't do their job.
It's that switching off which costs us dearly.

I’m so deflated that I don’t know what to say about the game that hasn’t already been said... but I hope the club ban the idiot who threw something at the Bolton players after their equalising goal. If you’re that easily provoked then you shouldn’t be allowed to attend football matches.2

I'll leave everything else for another post, but that formation doesn't work, and never will with the players we have. You'll get good periods, but never long enough to win many games, and we will always be vulnerable at the other end
What we had out there - 4231 or 4213 - a centre forward, a very advanced No 10 (Lee) and 2 wingers only works if the 2 wingers are the sorts of players who can chase back to help their full backs, as otherwise they get hopelessly exposed. And it needs really fit players too, the sort who can run and up down the flanks all game, and not flag with 30 to go.
For the first 30 minutes yes we looked good going forward, but as with every other game we look so vulnerable down the flanks, as defending isn't the forte of CBT and Leko. As they tired (CBT in particular), any protection dried up completely, and we faced waves of attacks. Being a Charlton full back this season is a nightmare job, as every team has spotted our weakness there, and it's not the fault of Watson and Clare/Gilbey either, as by trying to protect both the middle of the park and the flanks, they end up protecting neither.

This league gets tougher every year. And we seem to be getting worse every year.
Problem with being in the Covered End Upper it's really hard to see what's going on up the JS end of the pitch. (Although I seriously might need glasses right now).
I just feel a bit shell shocked. How the feck did that happen tonight?
First half I thought we'd finally nailed it. He selected the team that many of us would have gone for tonight, and it looked like it might pay off. Then for the last five minutes of the first half it was 'here we go again'.
Second half I was expecting to see us completely capitulate, but we seemed to have a spring in our step.
It was clear some players were beginning to look knackered, but pretty well up until their second goal (73rd minute) I thought we were in with a decent chance, and in fact were shading it. Perhaps if we'd brought on fresh legs in the 70th minute it might have made all the difference, but I suspect Adkins is too timid to take that risk, one of the problems with being on a losing streak (or a not winning streak at least).
So what do we do now? Well if, as some think, the problems at Charlton go deeper than the manager being inadequate, I have no idea?
Do we need a CEO. Yes, 100%
Do we need new coaching staff? I have no idea. Do any of us really know if they're any good?
Do we need better recruitment? 100% yes, but how do you go about that?
Do we need a new manager? Possibly, but if the problems are more deep rooted than that, it might be like sticking a plaster on a wooden leg.
I'm at a loss, 100%. But I have to say, any change right now feels better than no change.

Thought
Adkins was a good appointment and continued to back him until now. But there is clearly something very wrong behind the scenes and ultimately the manager takes the fall. Sandgaard has to take the tough call before a wretched starts becomes something far more serious ... as it stands there are no signs of any corners being turned

Was it me or did JJ and JE have more of an active role in giving instructions to the players tonight than usual - saw them by the touchline quite a bit…….0

Curbs for manager at Fleetwood on Saturday.
Back to basics. 4-4-2 and a nought-nought.
Bit of organisation. Stop the oppo playing through us and give our fullbacks some proper cover.
There stopped the rot already.

Elliot Lee looks a luxury player, don't rate him - spends most of the game on the floor4

They just kept banging 20 - 30 yard diagonal balls into acres of space on our right hand side. Matthews played very centrally (he must have been asked to) for a full back and so we never cut out the space, so they kept hitting it.
It looked to me like they were sizing us up in our dominant period and waiting for us to open up.
First game I have seen this season. My sympathies to the regulars.3 -

It's ridiculous that YET AGAIN we seem to have a team of players with so many unable to run and press for 90 minutes, indeed 70 minutes. In previous seasons it was excusable as we were dealing in the bargain bucket bin, but this summer we had a decent budget and the chance to build a team with the right physical attributes.
I've said previously that our formation leaves us very vulnerable defensively, really not helped by so many opposition players being fitter than us
As for tonight, Davison made a good impression again. Leko and CBT had good moments going forward, but are part of the defensive problem, especially as CBT was knackered after 45 minutes, and no way should have stayed on for the full 90. Clare showed promise, Watson was ok...
Yes we were 3-1 down and chasing a win, but it all got a bit Karel Fraeyeish at the end, with Washington, CBT, Davison and Stockley in attack with Gilbey and bizarrely Lee being the midfield behind them, I suppose we should be thankful we only conceded one more.3 -
First game for me this season, usually following on the CL match thread and needing to see for myself what it's all about.
No lack of effort. Can't believe some accusing our players of laziness. That first half looked like some mostly average and below average players playing for each other and forming more than the sum of their parts, then we looked spent. Not sure when Leko went off but that seemed significant.
Couldn't believe Lavelle was a pro footballer. Mistook him for Pearce. Plays it slow and easy along the back. Very nervous demeanour. Akin F very good and mostly composed in contrast.
Also our keeper was working hard. Notable that he was consistently encouraging Lavelle to pass forward, while also making himself available for a Lavelle back-pass. He made a fine save in the first half that the ref mistakenly gave a goal kick for. He was unsighted for the first goal. 3 Bolton players were in offside positions I think as the ball was struck.
I'd like to see some analysis of what went wrong on the pitch tonight by those qualified to do so. Tactical errors can/should be addressed without sacking the manager and if there has been an improvements over the past few games (from accounts on here) it could be detrimental to sack the manager if green shoots are emerging (despite tonight's result!).

Curbs and Deano talked about fitness, we have all noticed that fitness is an issue right through the squad, the question now, is why? We are on the cusp of October, yet many players were blowing out of their arses after an hour.
Yet every team we have played look fitter and sharper than us.
Deano isn't a big fan of Sports scientist's dictating how many minutes a player can play, he said sometimes you just have to say to them to get on with it and just play.....he said sometimes telling players they can only do X minutes means they mentally switch off...
The flip side is Ive now watched every minute of every game and we look lethargic. The only exception was that first 35 minutes at Gillingham where CBT was unplayable.
By contrast tonight he was anonymous. Leko played very well first half, he did track back most of the time, but you could see he was being coached to do so from the touchline. Matthews whilst not too bad going forward at times isn't great at receiving the ball out from the back and neither are any of our centre halves. Defending wise he is so hit and miss....lately miss and as bad a Gunter was on the left.
Purrington for me was a real plus tonight as he was against Gillingham. He defends and gives us balance, doesn't try anything flash but gives 100%
The elephant in the room. Nigel....I feel sorry for him, albeit Im already weary of his Smashie Nicey characteristics. The players are as much to blame in many ways as the whole management team.
Some clearly are not playing for him, although tonight we saw effort without that key ingredient, "quality".
Nigel has clearly lost most of the fanbase that comment on here and elsewhere on social media.
His judgement is clearly flawed as is the whole Billy Big Bollocks image the club is portraying.
Lets drop all the flashy soundbites and that dreadful anthem Addicks to Victory and get back to the very basics.
Build a team from the defence outwards, if you can keep a clean sheet, there's always a chance of nicking one at the other end.
Time to show some genuine management skills Thomas, if not, get someone in who can run the club in your absence.15 -

"We’ve got a long-term vision", though - does anyone who knows anything about football believe such a thing exists in the third tier in 2021? The manager's job is a short-term vision to get the f*ck out of there (in the right direction) - particularly in this godforsaken division.

Even if Thomas had said to us - "Sorry chaps we won't be blowing this league away, but I want us to be a solid L1 side aiming for the playoffs" - 2nd bottom would be a massive failure1 -

This is the thing, isn't it? It's delusional. Still, maybe Adkins' long-term vision is knowing his best team by Christmas.0 -
Scoham said:J BLOCK said:Don’t want Jackson or Euell in the job, this is too critical now and we need an experienced head.
An experienced manager at this level means a “big name” like Adkins dropping down, or someone who’s been at this level for years and not made the step up.
Give JJ and Euell a few games to see if they get a reaction, if not bring in a good young manager on the way up.
Successful managers at this level tend to be younger. Maybe it’s fresh ideas, more drive to do well or finding it easier to relate to players? Whatever it is it works more often than the likes of Adkins and Slade stepping down and feeling like they’re doing us favour.Cafc43v3r said:Everybody out, including Gallen if he has more responsibility than negotiating contracts and fees.
Rip the whole thing up. Give the manager 100% responsibility and accountability.
Yes that includes Jackson we have been shit, mainly, for 2 years now. He has to take some responsibility.6
