Thanks, IS, I don't feel quite so persecuted now!

(And for your comments under the other post, WSS - I won't take your very inspirational rant personally...)
  • How could anyone not be excited about next year? I'm looking forward to...

    1) not going into every game (or at least half of 'em) thinking we're gonna lose, or just praying we limit the oppostion to only 2/3 goals

    2) going on some quality new away days...Plymouth, Scunthorpe etc

    3) seeing how our new signings get on. I know nothing about McCarthy, BIG Chris or Varney really

    4) enjoying the atmosphere at the valley, which was much better at the tail end of last season

    5) watching Nicky Weaver blowing kisses to the covered end, but getting away with it coz we all love him now!!

I'm just looking forward to properly enjoying the day out (for the first time in a couple of years) and getting behind the team.

If we get in the playoffs it will have been a decent season, but it's not the end of the world if we don't. As long as the club still exists I'm a happy man...I have had a tenner on us to win the league though!
  • +1 WSS I'm positive and looking forward to the season, but probably won't see much on the tv. Thank gawd for downloads, fingers crossed.

We are now seeing the stark reality of the marvels Curbs worked during his watch to keep us at the top level with comparitively limited resources.

I can understand some of the negativity because people remember the Gliksten days. We got relegated, narrowly missed promotion and then the Club declined culminating in the dramatic events of 1984 and almost going out of existence. The price of survival being seven and a half years of exile.

An old codger like me fears history repeating itself, especially when you consider the vast financial differentials between the Premier league and everybody else.

That said there are grounds for optimism. Pards is backing his man management skills by taking a calculated risk with some players he has signed but if they come off they are Premiership quality players so have the ability to get us back first time which is what we MUST aspire to.

Midfield is the obvious area now that needs some work. I respect Matty Holland's attitude and demeanour immensely but sadly he is past his best now. Unless Pards can work some more magic and acquire another Song and/or ZZ type on loan I can see Faye having a vital role as Kish and Hughes have gone. I don't think Matty's legs can do it anymore, certainly not over 46 matches.

I'd also like another creative player as Reid's fitness is so problematic. Ambrose can fill in maybe but I think we need more.

I'll finish as I started. The more time elapses the better Curbs looks as a manager. Pardew, although considerably less cautious in some ways, is a worthy successor though and I cannot think of anybody better within our resource level.
