Morning Rant

WSSWSS
edited July 2007 in General Charlton
Right, I’ve got a bit to get off of my chest this morning.

It’s not because of the signings, it’s not because of the board, it’s not because of the bloody women’s team and it’s not because I only have 3 girls on the go at the moment…

It’s about us. Why is there so much negativity about the team around a whole 5 weeks before the season even kicks off? How do we think this may affect the new players who have joined our club if they get wind of it? Is this what we are about or have we been spoilt for the past 8 years and forgotten what Charlton is about?

What are people’s expectations for the players we should sign? Do people think we should be signing the best players around? Reality check – we can’t do it. I know some people don’t like Weaver but in all honesty how many times can anyone here say they’ve seen him or any of the other new signings play? I’ve had other football fan’s telling me over the years that Andy Hunt, John Robinson and even Darren Bent aren’t really that good but I know we all feel very differently.

I think it is highly unfair for people to judge Alan Pardew and the players who have not even had the chance to show us what they can do. How would you feel if you went into a new job and before you even started you were getting slagged off and your abilities called into question before you even sat down?

We are starting a new era in Charlton’s 102 year history, yes its in the Championship, yes its with a new manager and yes its with new players but for goodness sake people it’s still the red shirt, it’s still The Valley – it’s still Charlton Athletic – the club we love and support with a passion, that in my opinion, is the greatest in the world.

So for the love of God can we please all do the right thing, get behind the players, the manager, the board and each other – show the players what it means to pull on the shirt, show them the passion we have for the club and you never know they might actually surprise a few of you.

Rant over (sorry its not written that well but I’m stressed!)

    Well Said West Side
  • Well said WSS. Some people need to take a reality check. We are no longer a Premiership team and our fans need to understand that this makes a huge difference to the sort of players we can afford to sign. I say well done Pardew.

    Thanks you WSS

I said I wasn't coming back on here as I thought I would say something I regret.

    Cheers.
  • Couldn't agree more shagger. I can't work out what some people expect either, obviously seen as we missed out on Henry and Torres we won't be achieving anything this year.

    Jeeeezus.

    [slaps spam]
  • As you say there are five weeks to go and we all expect one or two more players at least to be signed with maybe one or two more on loan, at some point recently there was mention of 8-10 players coming in, if that was true then there are more signings to come.

It's been clear that the reserves/youth/academy hasn't produced any decent players for some time - only Sam and Sankofa have come through the ranks and neither have become first team regulars excepting when other players have been injured. So we need to acquire not just a first team to replace the departed Darren Bent, JFH, Bryan Hughes El Karkouri, Carson, Myhre etc but to develop a stronger reserves side and many of Pardew's acquisitions have been made to date with the mid-long term in mind as there is pretty much no-one in the reserves who looks like stepping up. Some of the other signings - Weaver and Todorov in particular I'd be worried about if they had involved serious amounts of money, but both were free and presumably neither dents the payroll appreciably and if one comes off and has a good year or even a half-decent season/Charlton career it'll be worth the gamble and besides that we need some experienced heads.

I'll reserve judgement until August time when the remainder of the squad has taken shape, we have money from Darren Bent's transfer and maybe by then Romm and one or two others may have been rotated out, but who we sign depends on who is available. With all the money sloshing around the Premiership now there will be a few good players who will suddenly find that they far from being a starter might only be getting an occasional game from the bench, when a Spanish?German/Itlai?French etc international is brought in and may prefer a regular starting role at Charlton, plus of course a few good players who could be loaned our way for the season as Carson was last year. My guess is that the board/Pards are keeping the Bent money free to snap up one or two of these players.

In essence the whole squad is being rebuilt, from top to reserves and we need to be a little more patient until we see who will fill those last few places. I think we are all agreed that we need at least one more strong midfielder, if not two and while moaning might seem a good idea it really is foolish when there are still new faces to come in.

  • Hear hear!!
  • Bravo!! you've put Churchill to shame with that speech!
  • You're hired !!
  • It's been a least an hour since the speech - can I start a moan now as we'll have nothing else to talk about otherwise ;0)
  • Good speech!
Why is there so much negativity?
I think because initially many of us assumed we would be good enough with a couple of changes to storm back up, probably as Champions. Now it has dawned on us that a top two finish is rather unlikely with a radically changed team next season.

That, and the fact we're selling top players and replacing them with shite.

That, and the fact we're selling top players and replacing them with shite.

What top players have we sold exactly? Apart from Bent.

Maybe we should have pushed a little harder and got a swap deal for Ronaldo, Beckham and Ashley Cole instead?

Pards built a great team at West Ham from 'shite', trust him, give his players a chance.
  • I am really looking forward to the new season. New teams, less glitz, more football. All with my friends.

ahh, give us a big hug.

Also looking forward, just hope people don't expect miracles from Day 1....
  • WHAT ON EARTH ELSE COULD WE REPLACE THEM WITH?!?!?!?!

Who, that is either available or would be interested in coming to us could we replace Darren Bent with?? He's the only top player we have sold.

    Torres? Henry? Berbatov?

Or should we do what we can in our position and bring players in who will score goals at the level we now find ourselves at?

If the players were that good we wouldn't have gone down.

Holland will be a good player next year, Reid will be a good player next year, likewise Todorov, McCarthy, Iwelumo, Thatcher, Weaver, Gibbs if you listen to Henry ;-), and Varney. And don't say 'only if they are fit' because that stands for any profesional sportsman.

    WE HAVE NO MONEY!!!

WE SPENT IT ON PEOPLE LIKE ROMMEDAHL, BENT, HASSLEWAINK AND ALL THE OTHERS WHO WERE SO GOOD THEY TOOK US DOWN!!!

Or would you rather we kept on signing high earning mercenaries who couldn't give two shits about the club, the fans or putting in a bit of blood and sweat for the cause.

Bang on Carter, lets get our "old" Charlton back. I'd rather be in the CCC with a team of triers than in the Prem with Traore, Faye and Hasselbaink.
  • Nice well constructed rant WSS, bang on.

However, surely this is what message boards are all about eh. Im usually as optimistic as they come, I still thought we would stay up after Blackburn.

Im just dissapointed that we let Eastwood slip through the net, doesnt mean to say I wont get behind the players and manager 40+ times next season.
  • if for one moment positivity on this board meant anything to the players we'd have definitely stayed up last season due to the positivenes of most at the end of last season.....
    unfortunately it doesn't ...
we Have to be positive at the games and get behind the team no matter how shit we think some of them are cos booing a player wont improve them
we HAVE to roar them on even when things aren't going well , not just sit there in silence and hope it gets better, we need to show the sort of support and passion pompey show to their team whether they are 3 up or 3 down....
this year i'm very confident that we'll stay up;-)
  • Are we really CCC favourites? Please no..
  • WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

West stand comes running out the tunnel with his fist clenched and jumps in the air!!!!!!

    LOL
  • Damn right, WSS. Of course with the amount of rebuilding going on, things are uncertain, but while I can take an honestly-held and well-put dissenting view like Weegie's, the moaning and whining really gets on my thru'pennies.
