  • Doesn't seem well planned.

Unless they promote in-house they may need to wait one or even three months while the replacement works their notice.

Would have made sense to keep Chris to the end of the season so there was a handover anyway.
Not a fair statement  in my opinion to say not well planned.

Senior appointments in any industry take time. 3 months notice or longer often the norm and even then won’t always allow for a handover period. Ridiculously HR on-boarding of a new employee can take several weeks or up to a month post a job offer. This can be bettered but often isn’t.

I had inferred it wasn’t planned in as much as CP imitated it. As a small club we don’t have succession plans I assume for all roles out of practicality and of course due to recent neglect under RD and before.

To have negotiated a bit longer to handover : support is the right outcome.

I might guess CP wants to be fully clear by the end of the season and disappear on holidays etc. at the latest so the new incumbent also has a clean slate for next season.

I don’t think Chris is anxious to leave at all but he has now sold up and is moving well north of London.
    Is he moving to Brighton?
That will be a whoosh for many, but nice one fella.
  • So he was asked to leave , rather than he requested to leave
Correct - indeed my understanding is he was ‘told’
  • So the consensus is he was kicked out. The plot thickens. Will be very interesting to see who Thomas replaces him with?

@Airman Brown Interesting wording by you. Are you saying it wasn't his choice to retire this season?
  • Write a book in retirement Chris.  Many events have happened throughout your long time with CA and much speculation has been given to them but often the full facts never qiute emerge.

I am sure it would make a facinating read for all dedicated Charlton fans and could be a "best seller". (the proceeds might also be helpful to provide some compensation after leaving without a pension).

I wish you a long and happy retirement (when it comes) and thank you for being an important stabilising element at the club throughout the many turbulent times that have concerned us all.

They will probably ask him to sign an NDA before he leaves.

I suspect Bowyer, Adkins & JJ when he goes could all spill the beans but the NDA will stifle them.
  • On a day to day basis could somebody please provide a brief breakdown of what this role entails. And is it something that you would need to have done at another club to apply for?

    Getting your CV ready?
  • North of true London is Canary Wharf.
Which is in Scotland, just as Wandsworth is Wales.
True London is SE London obvs.

Ha Ha no not at all. I asking only because I don't really understand the role. Is it a job that could be shared or even done on a part time basis. As I'm pretty sure that Thomas is going to look at a lot of roles at the club and streamline things even more.
  • He is deffo planning on moving a good way north.
  • One absolute fundamental, which Chris never got wrong, is to make sure every player in all club teams is eligible to play. The rules and restrictions can be complex but at least we have never (from memory) been sanctioned for playing the wrong player or breaking Governing Body(s) rules.
The sensible thing it seems to me would be for the new club secretary to work alongside/shadowing Chris for a couple of months to learn the ropes.

The nightmare scenario would be if Cheese sandwich Cojones is reassigned to Chris’ role.
  • So he was asked to leave , rather than he requested to leave
Correct - indeed my understanding is he was ‘told’
not my understanding of it - was his choice
  • So it was his choice or he may have been pushed or possibly a bit of both. That's all clear then.

If he's retiring, why would he have to sign an NDA? (unless they pay him off).

And why would anything before 2020 be protected by Thomas Sandgaard? But Chris won't be signing an NDA and he isn't writing a book.

Always amuses me that people think x, y, or z could write a book about Charlton and it would be "a best seller". It's a very limited market.

I should have clarified. I meant a best seller amongst the Charlton following.
  • His role included to my knowledge:

Registering players with the FA and league.

Reregistering all the players, every year including contracts at youth levels.

Travel and hotels for away trips for all teams.

Arrangements for pre-season trips and games.

Dealing with FA and league over fixture dates, changes, rules, refs, etc

    Paying fines etc

    Registering new directors

    Attending league conferences.

All of which are a lot more complicated

Probably a lot more I've forgotten or just don't know about.

Thanks very much for that. Will be interesting to see if Thomas replaces him or promotes somebody internally.

Not aimed at you particularly, tbf. People say it all the time.

    @Airman Brown

was there something to infer from your previous response as I had taken the club announcement at face value initially as a well deserved retirement.

If you want to know whether he jumped or was pushed, the answer is somewhere in between. Where you put the emphasis is probably a matter of perspective.

That must've been fun at certain points under Lee Bowyer
