The Best Sport Film of all time

edited July 2007 in General Charlton
Well all this talk about past heroes has had me thinking...

Mine for Football has to be Hero-Mexico 86 with Michael Caine narrating...his dulcid tones talking about Zico 'trying' to find the pain in his leg when looking for a pen is great .... I just had a look on ebay for it and no one in Australia is interested(surprise) in uk theres one for VHS for 2 quid(boys snap it up youll love it) but unfortunately I dont think its available on DVD.. any one know? Ive just had a look on google ....couldnt find it : (

and As a general one its got to be Raging Bull by scorsese...

whats yours?

    Wasn't it Lawrie Sivell?

One of the most hilarious films ever made and to this day I suspect Silvester Stallone doesn't understand why.

Why, incidentally, were there so many Ipswich players in that film?
  • It was Kevin O'Callaghan, later to play for Millwall, who played the keeper who got his arm broken.

I bow to your superior knowledge but wasn't he a winger?

The implication being that Sly Stallone was actually 2nd choice to an undersized midget goalkeeper.?

He had a trial for us and played in a pre season friendly at the Valley.
  • He was a winger, and Laurie Sivell was also in the film as well I think, so dont know why O'Callaghan was the goalie,I have not seen the film in a long time.I did read an article about the film recently and did explain the Ipswich theme but have completely forgotten what it was !

Anyway, When Saturday Comes was much better !
  • Field of dreams for me too. Meant a lot to me as I lost my dad when I was only five but the whole concept of fullfilling your sporting dream after missing out for various reasons was wonderfull.

If you build it he will come.

You should read the book. "Shoeless Joe Jackson come to Iowa" by W P Kinsella. Excellent.
  • Field of Dreams was great. I would add Hoop Dreams as well. Glory Road was also pretty good.

this is true, o callahan was a winger but was goalie in the film! Another funny thing is, his name in the film was Tony Lewis, and one of my best mates has that name, and guess who he supports! Yep millwall

My vote goes to escape to victory, i loved it.
