Good job RS didn't start shooting off his tattoo. Sounds like a dose of both plastic gangster and little man syndrome to me, and definitely the right decision by Southgate imo
*Edited* Assuming that's true
You realise he got his tattoo partly as a reminder of how his father was gunned down to death, right? And he has vowed never to touch a gun in his life?
(Or maybe your post is in jest and I've missed it.)
Okay, whatever mate. Let's not go off subject
You're the one who needlessly brought up his tattoo!
I read this line in the paper today: "The players expected better protection from Southgate"
It's like they're not grown men. Protection?! Jesus wept.
Whats laughable from that is Southgate said in his press conference yesterday that he wasnt happy that it got leaked in the first place
If they want protection from the Management then either one of them or one of the background staff shouldnt have gone mouthing off to family / friends / the press directly - Should have let it remain behind closed doors in the first place!!
Anyone else think this is being massively over analysed?
One player allegedly carries out a seemingly unprovoked attack on a team mate and gets dropped for the following game. The end
British media though isnt it
The incident has given them something to sink their teeth into and will keep on biting until they get bored of it
Next we'll see them desperately trying to find other stories of fights / arguments within England training itself and question why said player hasnt been banned - Despite it being a completely different scenario!!
Wont be surprised if this is the slow start that'll see Southgate eventually leave which I continue to believe would be a disaster for the England National Team at present

Paddy that doesn't make sense ?
If my dad was killed by a hit and run driver I wouldn't have a tattoo of a Car !
At least have a cross through the gun or have words saying "no to guns"
I'm totally baffled by having a gun tattoo to honour your dad, WTF ?
"The players did expect better protection from Southgate"
There's a breaking story coming from a canteen cook that Southgate turned around quickly and his nose knock over a
cold dessert of sponge cake and fruit covered with layers of custard, jelly, and low fat creme over Harry Kane, which was on the high sweet counter. When at the news conference Harry was asked about this incident, he ignored the question and went a trifle death.

The trifle killed him? He certainly got his just desserts then.
I don't think it is fair to say they can do whatever they want. It needs to be sorted out, but don't throw Sterling under a bus when you do it and do something that is private. He has sorted it out with Gomez, so there shouldn't be a problem.
What if there is an incident before a crucial game?
Football is a competitive game and whilst you don't want players getting sent off, the most competitive ones are generally the best ones. Sterling will have enough money not to bother with football but he clearly cares about winning. Get as many winners in your side as possible, I say, and manage them well.
It's possible the players had signed a code of conduct with clear punishments set out for certain unacceptable behaviour, I for one am more than happy with the precedent set, if a player steps out of line the now clearly know what will happen, so they'll have no one but themselves to blame.
We blew an entire generation of world class players due to similar behaviour, let's make sure it never happens again.
Yes, and shite players should get away with less. They then have an incentive to try to be less shite. If Sterling decides to tell England to shove it one day, we will lose one of the World's best players. We don't have too many of those.
Of course you deal with it. But you don't have to publicly suspend him for one game, there are more private ways. Even a nice long chat.
So what you're saying is some players are more equal than others. You've been listening too much to comrade Corbyn (sorry admin).

Today's Mirror has run an article on famous football punch ups. No less than four of the players mentioned have strong Charlton connections. Makes me feel kinda proud.
This thread testifies to the fact that Southgate has. If he would have dealt with it internally and said there was a disagreement because they are passionate about the game, but they have kissed and made up we would not still be talking about it.
Anybody who has played football at any sort of serious level would know these sort of bust ups are not unusual and are soon forgotten, sometimes within a few hours.

How many tiers below England International were you playing at mate?
Quite a few sadly, Sunday league was my level, but I had bust ups in training. When I said serious level, I meant serious for those participating. I recall having a diver in our team who dived in training. He dived when I didn't touch him and I was so angry I gave him a reason in my next challenge. All my team mates had a right go at me and they were right to. I was disapointed in myself and that was the only lesson I needed. I still recall it now as something I am not proud of. All Sterling needed was to be told he is out of order by his peers and that would have done the job. We shouldn't know about it and if it is reported it should be played down.
I have also managed at youth level up until last season and never banned players from a game when I could have on a few occasions, I reasoned with them. I am not a headmaster.
Oh, well in my experience, at a slightly more serious level than Sunday League, if a player throws his toys out the pram, being find a weeks dough (or match fee, depending on how they're paid) and dropped for a few games is the usual MO at a Conference level Club. They usually then leave the Club
Also in my experience, most managers nowadays, at all levels and ages, try to instill discipline and professionalism, whether it's turning up well dressed or in the team track suit, to not having a dig at your team mates.
I was sure that it weren't GS who made this public, but could be wrong
I never played, but was involved in non League football for a few years and had plenty of mates who played at all levels, including Premier League. I've seen players lose their rag with fans, other players and managers alike and that was always the way it went. Pretty much industry standard.
Disagree it is industry standard. It does depend on the incident, I accept that. But when both players make up, it usually can be sorted internally. And I know of times this has happened. The issue you have is when they don't make up. But Gomez and Sterling have. I think Todd and Kiely had such an incident where Todd broke Kiely's nose and did serious damage. You have to suspend a player then, but I think Curbs was trying to resolve throughout and managed it in the end.
I think Southgate has to take into account the fact that some elements have had a go at Sterling and he is really proving himself to be a star of the team and this has the potential to do a lot of harm. Anyway, we won't agree.
It isn't just me though - here are the thoughts of Rio Ferdinand. I think he may be qualified to have a view:
Southgate has conducted himself in a admirable, eloquent & engaging way. Helping to make a Nation feel like they can have some sort of confidence & respect for the national team. However, I feel this incident could have been handled better.
Keep it behind closed doors & deal with it internally surely?! Come International Week, it’s meet up time between Sterling & Gomez... Raheem Sterling was still upset with Gomez about the result on Sunday & their little pushing/words said during the Liverpool vs City game.
So he has obviously gone into the England camp heated & gone for Gomez, in doing so grabbed Gomez by the throat. Obviously as a manager I’m sure having a harmonious squad is the best scenario - handshakes and hugs on sight not confrontations. But let’s be honest now this kind of stuff isn’t uncommon in squads full of testosterone.
In the various squads I have been a part of I have seen players get punched in the face, ribs broken, nose busted, head kicked like a football.....a throat grab was the equivalent of the intricate handshake embraces that are all too familiar today!
The main question is: Why this couldn’t be handled internally?
I suppose the management have felt it would be better to nip it in the bud prior to the press, agents, family friends leaking the news. However, the worst case on this instance would have been someone asking in a press conference “what happened between Raheem & Gomez, we heard there was a fight.
Easy answer we have a game to concentrate on. Incident done and dusted. No player looks any worse, we move on. Now Raheem is left to defend himself from all of the haters that had had their keyboards turned off due to him becoming a very worthy ambassador for the English game, and rightly so.
If this was a terrible incident then I would be all for public shaming & discipline. But for this ‘throat grab’ that we are TOLD it’s for I can’t understand it.
Gareth would no doubt had seen worse many times during his time as a player and manager. I just feel this could and should have been handled better to support the player & not hang him out to dry.
One of our World Class players who has conducted himself wonderfully through Racism and unwarranted criticism in an England shirt will now come under more scrutiny and be vilified in the media no doubt - when this could have been dealt with internally. Hindsight is a great thing though.
It seems to me, Raheem felt embarrassed by all that went on at the weekend.... a sign of winning mentality..... however channelled wrongly. Help educate him!

Am sorry but Rio Ferdinand is being an absolute twat in this situation
He's spoken out a few times how England's failure to win with the "Golden Generation" was down to the inter-club rivalries and how they were allowed to happen
Well Southgate hasnt allowed it to happen in this case and "Sir" Ferdinand is still outspoken over it
Reckon he should be one who would be best keeping his mouth shut about this subject - Had he done better himself then England may well have had a Major Trophy by now

I'm not offering it up as an explanation. Sterling did.
I agree it's completely counterintuitive, but... Yeah. That's the meaning he ascribes to it.
