Re Brooklyn, I'd completely forgotten about this. I think Saoirse Ronan is one of the finest young actors around so I'll probably give this a go.

    The book is better.
No book is ever better than the film.
    FACT.
Lord of the Rings. All three books are a bit better than the films.

The Hobbit. The book is much better than the three films.

Always surprises me just how few films I’ve watched when I read others comments. Never seen Atonement or Groundhog Day

I've probably watched too many films (and TV series), compared to most people around me. :joy:

Atonement I remember very clearly that it was a big hit around the world the year it was released. I was not particularly interested though and only watched it five years ago. I was really glad I didn't miss this great film. Some people don't like it though. To each their own.

I have to admit I haven't re-read Lord of the Rings since I was 12, so can't comment at that beyond a vague recollection of the structure needing a bit of work: "and now we're going to cut to a storyline we haven't revisited since half way through the LAST book, so you've probably forgotten how these characters got here in the first place" is a really unhelpful approach when each book is the size of a brick and you're having to wait for the person ahead of you in the library queue to finish before you can read it. Even though (I'm reliably informed by some of my friends) the films cut some stuff out, the way the various storylines were weaved together worked well.

In total agreement about The Hobbit films though. So much damn padding, you could quite easily have just had two films and not lost any of the original plot.

The book didnt win any Oscars.
And the films didn't win the International Fantasy Award, nor have they been consistently voted the most loved books in various countries around the world.

Come on, @Bedsaddick, get a bit of a move on. I'm sitting by the telly, remote in hand, wondering what I should be watching.

The book is massive. It would take weeks to read it, whereas with the film you're done in 3 hours and can get on with your life.
You can be done with one of the films in three hours, but better to take more than that and watch the extended edition.

But what you're basically saying is, you'd rather have a 30s wank than a whole evening of passionate love making?

Love Actually has one of the funniest scenes ever committed to celluloid.

I didn’t say it was the better film it’s just recommended because it’s really good and not many people will have seen it . Everyone has seen Elf !

    Just watched The Christmas Chronicles.

I am one pathetic human being. 42 years old and I don’t think there’s a single Christmas film I don’t end up crying watching!!

3 guesses which twat made a spectacle of himself by blubbing in church at his daughter’s carol concert tonight?
