Is belly dancing acceptable in 2018 ?

  • It get what CE is saying. Everyone is offended by most things now, so why not be offended over this outdated spectacle?

  • Belly dancing is great.

    Strippers are even better.

  • If its attractive I am not offended.
If it is unattractive I am offended.
  • Was I supposed to say something here? Sorry

Yes. We've all been waiting for you.
  • I have to say I'm quite surprised with the replies so far.
This world's getting too confusing for me.
So it's no longer deemed appropriate for fully dressed ladies to walk alongside darts players.
But it is appropriate to have some scantily clad ladies shaking their breasts and tummies in your general direction, when you're trying to eat your kebab ?

I'm genuinely not trying to cause an argument. I really struggle with the double standards as I see it.
Walking fully clothed demeans women , yet dancing scantily clad for your entertainment whilst eating dinner doesn't ?

Your confusion is rooted entirely in the absence of knowledge of the subject and its heritage.
Much as 'informed', 'liberal' westerners might be sceptical, there is no titillation intended with belly dancing, there is most definitely not to be any shaking of tits in your face, for the purposes of arousal. The clue is in the name.
The areas in which this dance form originated have a different notion of beauty in the female form.
Of course it's fine for this to be performed.
Would you question the plate smashing in a Cypriot restaurant?

Your question of "acceptability" speaks loudly of cultural arrogance and views belittling customs or morés simply because they are unfamiliar. It's different is all, just as the way the lamb is cooked and served, is different from how our northerrn european ancestors have cooked and served lamb.
  • The real issue is - how much does it really bother you that belly dancing is accepted? I have to be honest and say it doesn't bother me - mainly because it is tradition and pretty harmless. I might take a harsher view if it wasn't and somebody had just come up with the idea - but even if they had, I'm sure they would legally be allowed to do it. If you want to compare everything, it might well do your head in, but my suggestion is just to try to apply reasonable values and not pick holes in things to make you angry.

Just to clarify, I'm not bothered, certainly not angry & couldn't care less, what most people do within reason. I was just curious as to whether others thought it demeaned women. The answer is a definite no, so all good with me & I'm pleasantly surprised. The end, sink
Let's get back to the unaffordability of printer ink.

  • Ah yes, one of the few Arabic traditions accepted in this country.
  • Thank God goodness so many on CL are so knowledgeable about everything.
  • Just sell the club Douchebag!

Oi! No doing a Cameroon and sliding off after opening a can of worms. You must stay and face the music.
  • Belly dancing is some sort of "performance".

Ladies at darts or F1 are just eye candy and rather pathetic.

Don’t agree with the F1 grid girls being withdrawn at all.

Did nobody think to ask the girls doing the job what they want? It’s their choice - they are not forced to do anything they don’t want to do. They were all models - and basically made a living from the job. They got to jet around the world - and be part of the glamour of F1.

I think it is bloody unfair they are being told what’s ok for them to do or not.

It should be up to them.

  • The last thing we want to do here is ask the belly dancers themselves, what do they know.

Best course of action is to let some MPs, some guardian journalists, some big corporation bosses, the loose women panel, a feminist group, Piers Morgan that sort of thing decide cos they know what’s best for them.

But whether you agree with it or not, it was always an executive decision made by the owners of F1. They can make it, they can change it. They own it!

Now you’re getting it, anyone but the belly dancers themselves, so progressive.

So if something that is potentially racists occurs you'll respect the institute of Black Lawyers' opinion over what the majority of this forum thinks of the mater?

Nah mate, I’m talking about belly dancers.

Yep - but suffice to say some of the pressure coming from the outside would have influenced them to make such a decision.

They didnt randomly wake up one morning and decide it.

Anyway that’s a sport right there with far more to worry about than who holds the drivers board up on the grid

That is true - they make a decision based on a number of factors. Don't see why people have to slag of a changing society when whether the decision is right or wrong, it is taken to try to respect women and isn't forced on the F1 owners.

But it's forced onto the woman!
  • All decisions an employer makes are forced on employees.
  • Funnily enough, I was doing a bit of belly dancing the other weekend in Orpington, covered end missed a treat.
