just seen this photo on FB. I instantly recognised the ground. Charlton v Preston 1937. And people are complaining about our new pitch 🥸

Been on this site before but have to agree with you it’s a brilliant photo.

One of the only grounds in league where if you brought a seat on the day you would also have to pay to enter ground. Ie two payments,

Seen this photo come up a few times on Facebook, most recently a couple of days back. Know all the usual faces there, including DVD Dal at the back there, RIP

I know that it is all relative and we live in different times with higher expections, but could you imagine the face of someone who watched Charlton in that old ground as they stare at the modern Valley?

You have to have stands to have light bulbs, when I started going in the 50s you had a small West stand and the Covered End, and as I stood at the other end where the South away end is now, it never bothered me

Charlton v Aston Villa, FA Cup, February 1938. Attendance 75,031 (highest attendance of any South London club) (including the ones who left Woolwich a few years earlier and went to the other side of the river).
