  • Are we such a one-day side that we're prepared to throw away our first innings match after match after match?

Once is poor, twice is awful ... but all bloody season?!
  • Surely SOMEONE has to make a bit of a stand !
  • 54-6 at tea
  • What a joke performance so far.
  • Stevens v Middlesex atm

    189-9 at the close.

    Stewart 60*

A lead of 28. 11 required for a batting point!
  • What a crazy day. Interesting to heat Stephens describe himself as more of a batsman, as to me over the last few years his bowling has been far more important
"I'm a guy who bowls a little bit, but I'm a batter. I get paid to bat and it is really frustrating when I don't get my runs, so it was good to contribute.

"All rounder" would surely be the best description of this legend after today .
  • To say today was exciting would be an understatement. With rain forecast for Wednesday tomorrow is massive for us and we really need our bowlers to make a concerted effort. Henry looked off the pace and we will need him to rediscover his explosive form.

Throughout the day there were no wides or no balls. In fact the only dropped catch came in the penultimate over of the day. Will be back again tomorrow and hope we can get a bonus point. Stewart batting really well. Apparently this pair put on a100 last wicket partnership in this fixture earlier on in the season. More of the same please.
  • Darren Stevens has signed another one year contract. Thought this might be his last season but interesting that we have re-signed him even though we will, hopefully, be in Div 1 next season. Perhaps, like Tredwell, will be used as a coach too?

    Good news.

I do not claim to have any real inside knowledge of affairs at Kent but at one stage I was reliably informed that Stevo was not at all happy about not being involved in T 20 this year, although he was genuinely injured part of the time, and was contemplating leaving at the end of the season.

Glad to see peace has broken out.

It's interesting that he says that he is a batsman that "bowls a bit". His success with the ball in the CC has coincided with his drop in the batting line up from as high as 5 down to 8.

This and his lack of use with the ball in last season's T20, has had the knock on effect of him being omitted from the T20 side where we have been using 6 or even 7 "specialist" batsman (including Denly) plus 4 specialist bowlers.

I'm sure he wasn't, but what does he expect when the team was generally playing well. His type of bowling is deadly when it's cloudy and the pitches have some green, but isn't suited to hot dry weather and flat dry pitches which is what we got mid summer

There is one other aspect that makes the CC different from T20 and that is that agile fielding is far more important in the shorter form of the game. Batsmen in T20 will target and know which fielders they can take liberties with and with the best will in the world Stevens is not going to be in the same category as say Dickson or Blake when it comes to that.

Rumour has it that when Stevo was left out of the Kent side up at Derby a couple of week sago, he was so annoyed that he went and played two rounds of golf, then came back down south. Ollie Robinson (also left out of the matchday squad) stayed to watch play. Glad he's sorted his dispute out and will be around next year.

I hope he didn't, as that sounds a bit childish and petulant for a 42 year old

How did Adam Riley feel when after taking all those wickets at Derby, he got left out of the next 2 CC matches? He's someone who needs to be playing, not a veteran at the end of his career

It does sound somewhat selfish but, as you say, he is 42 and if it allows him time to spend with his family that he might otherwise have had then so be it. We're hardly going to ask him to perform 12th man duties especially given what I've said about his fielding whereas someone like Ollie, who is making his way in the game at 20, would probably value the experience.

As for Riles, I'm afraid he is victim of the tracks we're playing on, the time of year that the CC is played and the emergence of Denly as a front line spinner. It is only on tracks such as Derby that one can see him being used which is really hard on the lad especially as Quayyum is being used as the white ball "second" spinner.
  • 192 all out for a lead of 31

Stewart, no doubt destined to be Stevens replacement ultimately, with a very useful 63.
  • Struggling here. 56-0
  • Middx 59-0 after 18 overs
