going to France next Friday for 2 weeks. Anyone been to Carcassone ?, we are driving (avoiding Paris) via Rouen / Le Mans / Toulouse
a convoy of 4 vehicles (inc caravans / motorhomes) 8 adults and 8 kids in total
stopping over 2 nights on the way with 10 nights down there and then 2 stopovers on the way back
Looking forward to it, but not particularly relishing the drive with 4 kids in the car (ipads / kindles fully loaded up and enough snacks and sweets to start a mini Tesco's)
@phil drive was great, so much easier driving on their roads, more scenic and the services are brilliant as are the tolls...stopped every few hours for the kids to stretch legs and even though we did 840 miles from home it didn’t feel like it. Had plenty for the kids to do and eat though which helped. 2 more nights left here and then 2 more stopovers on the way home

Done road trips into Europe for the last 6 years and agree with you there, last year we took the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander and done 1,700 miles around Spain (4 weeks) a fantastic trip. Off to France for 3 weeks in September, just booked the ferry and will check on the weather before deciding on a route.....hope to do camping for most of the trip.

If it's convenient worth driving on the A20....most of it is free (from Brive to Vierzon).

We’re already thinking Portsmouth to Bilbao next year - longer ferry but less driving, somewhere in northern Spain close to Bilbao

In case anyone is interested, there still exist a couple of European motorail services, which are very reasonable. Hamburg --Vienna - 12 hours overnight. Dusseldorf - Innsbruck - same. Plenty across France too - Paris - Nice. Which is nice.
