Amos: 7.5 - still makes me a little nervous but decent display, couple of good saves and no chance with goal. Solly: 8 - said recently how he looks reborn under KR, good display capped with great cross for the goal DaSilva: 7.5 - kept Kightly quiet, very good player who I think will only get better as the season goes on. Bauer: 8 - Looks a much better player alongside Pearce, forming an outstanding partnership Pearce: 9 MOTM - as above but the better of the two. A great leader, a great fighter and proper old fashioned defender. None of this David Luiz nonsense, he is our John Terry Kashi: 7 - just scrapped a 7. Passing could be quicker but like the CBs, forming a good partnership with JFC. Not one of his best games, but probably still as good as Crofts could play Holmes: 7.5 Crossing poor and not his best game, again shows his quality that he still played ok. Extra 0.5 for yet another outstanding goal. Forster-Caskey: 6.5 - Decent display but nothing else to add really. Average CM performance, but forming a reliable partnership with Kashis Clarke: 8.5 - shaded for MOTM by Pearce, love watching him. Continually surprising people, perhaps shouldn't be surprised now, clever, good movement, needs to chip in with a few goals but think its entirely possible in this side. Fosu-Henry: 6 - frustrated me today. Obviously a good player and am excited with his potential, but incredibly frustrating with poor decision making. Assume he will be more of an impact sub when Marshall is back but doing a decent job while he's out. Magennis: 8 - works hard despite not being the most technically gifted. Nice header for the goal, looked jaded but think he's going to have a big season.
Dodoo: n/a - hope there's not too many appearances like today to look forward to. Konsa: n/
Amos: 6.5 not much to do but doesn't look a 100% confident Solly: 7.5 best game I've seen him in for a long time! DaSilva: 7.5 so confident on the ball & gave there number 17 a torrid time. Bauer: 8 solid Pearce: 8.5 great professional performance Kashi: 7 poor passing today but got himself in the right positions to help CB'S out. Holmes: 9 MOM bloke is a machine who just stop running, great goal (again) Forster-Caskey: 6.5 unlucky with overhead but passing not great today. Clarke: 8.5 some of the balls he played were just fantastic, gets about & deserved a goal, which leads me to... Fosu-Henry: 6.5 should played Clarke in to give him the chance to kill the game off. FB's don't like him though with his quick feet and direct running, he will be more effective on other days. Magennis: 8 There CB's couldn't big mag today and he took his goal well.
Good team performance but I feel like we could have moved a gear today. Take nothing away from Southend though, came here with a plan and made life difficult at times.
Amos: 6.5 - I've sad it before, the guy is brave. Seems to be enjoying his time at The Valley. Vocal, (sometimes too vocal!) in telling his CBs what he wants.
Solly: 7.5 - Good performance, in a very good defensive display.
DaSilva: 8 - I don't get some of the criticism for Jay. Highlight for me, in the first half, tackled his man like a tank, then got up and came away with the ball. Always supplying an option for his winger. The little man really is very good. Tell anybody from Chelsea he is playing crap. Would love him to be released so we could sign him. Even when Page returns, can still be used as one of the attacking three.
Bauer: 7.5 - Solid. Looks a different player to last season. A big change to his attitude and confidence, that leads me to...
Pearce: 8.5 - The warrior at the heart of the defence. How much better last season may have been, but for Pearce's injury. Has lifted Bauer's performances, too.
Kashi: 5.5 - It took me a while, but I worked out what was going wrong with Ahmed yesterday. There was a little bit of a lack of zip to his passing. It meant that a) the opposition were able to anticipate, and attempt to intercept, his passes. And b) it meant that often, the ball arrived at the Charlton player, just as an opposition player did. Which meant the man on the ball was often under pressure. Now, I have marked Kashi as "average", but average for him is probably better than any other holding midfielder in League One...
Holmes: 8 - Ricky didn't like not being top scorer for all of 3 minutes, did he? Not his best performance, but for about 10 minutes, he was unplayable. It's what he brings to the team. Another cracking goal for his highlight reel. Would have scored higher, but for his absolutely awful corners.
Forster-Caskey: 7 - Does the simple things well. Puts his foot in when needed. Ghosts into the box to make an extra attacker. Another whose corners were woeful.
Clarke: 8.5 - MOTM. The word "genius" is banded about too often. Albert Einstein was a genius. Stephen Hawking is a genius. Billy isn't a genius. What he is, is a wizard. Sees passes that no one else does. Lovely ball control. Clever at keeping possession. Times his runs perfectly. Would probably have scored more goals, if other players had half the vision he has. The player who stitches everything together. Great signing by Robinson.
Fosu-Henry: 5.5 - Not his best game, but the biggest criticism is his decision making. Gets in great positions, which is excellent. Scares defenders with his skill and pace. He will get better as he matures. Still a work in progress.
Magennis: 8 - Thumping header by the big man. His positioning and movement means he wins far more headers than he should. Enormous strength to hold off hulking defenders. Willing runner, who will fight for the cause in any position needed. Vital part of the team.
A quick comment about Dodoo. He's being written off far too quickly by some. Let's not forget, he has had only one week training with his new teammates...
Amos: 5.5 - shaky and needs to command more, nearly got caught once or twice and look for Magennis for goal kicks late on in the game Solly: 8 - class from Solly, his cross was great and didn't have any trouble all game DaSilva: 7.5 - caught out once or twice but pace to recover. So good on the ball, going to be unreal Bauer: 6.5 - done alright but BFG can do better. Still very good centre back for this league Pearce: 9 - fantastic yesterday, would've been losing if it wasn't for him and his blocks and tackles Kashi: 6.5 - good effort first half, unbelievable quality, not at his best yesterday but that's the standard he's set Holmes: 7.5 - extra half mark for his goal, was great yesterday, some poor crosses, but was playing with a knock second half, got to look after him Forster-Caskey: 6.5 quiet but it happens sometimes, got a feeling he is going to be fantastic on Tuesday night Clarke: 8 - so good, he really is. Adds a totally different dynamic to the team, works hard and comfortable on the ball Fosu-Henry: 6.5 - should've played Clarke in for a one on one second half but shot instead, needs to feed Solly more but I do like him Magennis: 8 powerful header, so reliant on him it's scary but he's going to score loads this season. Love that he done a job out wide left and done it well Dodoo: n/a Konsa: n/a
Amos: 5.5 - a good reflex save in the first half but shaky on crosses in the second Solly: 7.5 - solid defensively and a superb cross for the opener DaSilva: 7.5 - tough, speedy and excellent going forward Bauer: 8 - a really sound performance, with good anticipation throughout Pearce: 8.5 - led from the front Kashi: 6 - an average display, which fell below his own exalted standards. I hope he's got enough in the tank for Tuesday Holmes: 8 - not too much came off for him until he caught fire in the second half. A matchwinner, with quality and desire by the bucketload. Must be a nightmare for defenders Forster-Caskey: 7 - solid and quietly efficient. Always available and recycled the ball well Clarke: 9 - MoM: a masterful display Fosu-Henry: 6 - blew hot and cold but his speed and trickery are a real problem for defenders. His failure to play in Clarke in the period between our two goals was lamentable but his decision making will surely improve with experience and good coaching Magennis: 7 - led the line well and scored a classic centre-forward's goal. I wouldn't underestimate the physical and emotional energy expended by Josh in the two Northern Ireland games but, as ever, he put in a good shift
Amos: 6.5. One good save in first half but nervous flap at the end. Solly: 7.5. A lot better. Good overlapping and cross for goal. DaSilva: 7.5. Bauer: 7. Not as good as previous games. Pearce: 8.5. Mom. Immense. Kashi: 7. Couple of dodgy passes but much better second half. Holmes: 8. Great goal, bit quieter than normal but apparently sick. Forster-Caskey: 7. Clarke: 8. He plays a massive part in everything good that we do. Fosu-Henry: 6.5. Could have released Clarke for a chance but didn't could have been costly. Magennis: 8. Good goal, won a lot of headers too. Amos: 7 Looks vulnerable occasionally but made a vital save in the first half with his feet to prevent them taking the lead
Solly: 8 Assured, commited performance by the team skipper and what a lovely cross for Big Josh's goal
DaSilva: 7 First time this season I've seen him look occasionally troubled but with the help of the ubiquitous Ricky Holmes he eventually dominated his opponent and will have learned from that
Bauer: 7 Not as spectacular as Pearce but a lot of useful tidying up and support
Pearce: 8.5 Seemed to have 'thou shall not pass' carved across his chest and dealt well with an effective awkward opponent in Ranger as well as making a series of successful, vital blocks
Kashi: 7 Loses a little for getting caught in possession once or twice but otherwise another capable, assured performance from Ahmed
Holmes: 9 This man takes commitment to another level. He fluffed a couple of corners but more than made up for that with his overall industry be it helping out Da Silva or being instrumental in nearly all our meaningful attacking. The goal was a well deserved reward.
Forster-Caskey: 7 Easy to overlook his contribution sometimes but complemented the rest of midfield well and contributed throughout
Clarke: 8.5 This bloke is second only to Ricky Holmes for industry and commitment and Ricky's goal gave him the edge for me today but most weeks Billy would have been my MOM
Fosu-Henry: 7 Not as prominent as other matches but did his job and linked well with Solly
Magennis: 7.5 Wholehearted performance and a great header from Solly's cross for the opening goal
Amos: 5 had ab average match, far to hesitant for me, and I suspect the back 4. His distribution was poor. Solly: 7 was his performance going forward DaSilva: 7 good going forward and struggled manfully against players twice his size Bauer: 6 to many header up and under ones. Pearce: 6 one or two poor back passes Kashi: 7, got better in the second half Holmes: 8 Forster-Caskey: 6 Clarke: 7 Fosu-Henry: 6 struggled to cope with close marking he got and too selfish. Magennis: 8 and mom, for scoring a goal and stopping one. Wish players could get closer to him, as his hold up play was excellent.
