    Having an okay start.

Batting well, averaging 53, but been bowling poorly.

Our new overseas arrived on Thursday, though. The second leading wicket taker in Pakistani First-Class cricket last season. 82mph, swings it a mile both ways ... hope to do lots of work with him in the nets.

I suspect we may play in the same league. If you can see to it that you're in the 4s on 24 June, Paddy's army is waiting for you. Don't bring the overseas guy though.
    Looks like we do.

And bring the overseas guy if you like - if he tries to bowl properly, our pitch will probably send the ball flying everywhere, so I'd comfortably expect our top scorer to be byes/other extras...
Did you watch the video Paddy? It looks like he just bowls at the wicket and doesn't even need fielders. The first one on the video looked as near to unplayable as it gets (much like @Leuth's only ball faced last Sat).

Mine was perhaps a little less unplayable, if we're splitting hairs

Did say he could swing it both ways...

He looks quick enough to me in slow motion.

    Yep, looks like we do.

If I continue as I have with the ball then I'll be there on the 24th - without any questions needing to be asked!!

Look forward to it, will make sure I am there.

    FFS! :open_mouth:
  • Quick tip. Don't stand two feet leg side of the wicket when facing him.
  • How much would the overseas get paid for the season at your level?
  • Ours which is Sussex premier level gets 1 pound a run and 10 a wicket plus has a coaching job alongside, in the past we have had, Kirk werners ( Sussex, South Africa A ) Chris Morris ( South Africa, IPL, Surrey last season ) Matt love ( Australia A, first level grade cricket ), standard of cricket is very high and some ridiculously quick bowlers in our league

I have heard stories of several former Kent Premier League sides paying all their first team even though this is meant to be an amateur game. As I say, they are former members of the KPL and it was down to one backer in each case.

That simply is unsustainable and it is far better to have a good colts set up and bring those players through - the current Bexley 1st X1, for example, contains 8 players 24 or under and that side is one of the few that has never been relegated from the KPL.

Very impressed with Bexley's youth set-up, also for the girls. Somewhat randomly I'm on John D's mailing list for the girls cricket newsletters as my daughter guested for Bexley at an indoor tournament a couple of years ago.

I agree. Six foot down the leg side would be more sensible.
  • A solid win for Leuth, AshBurton, myself and our cricketing colleagues on Saturday! 45-run margin with ten men.

How did everyone else get on?

I understand your opponents were 0 for 1 after two balls, want to talk us through it  ?
  • Although Seb is still out due to his fractured thumb, I had the pleasure of umpiring his Bexley Colts team's game against Hartley. It turned out to be a relatively comfortable win for Bexley but I have to say that both sides were a delight. In fact, the Hartley side were both entertaining and humerous, especially the way the male and female members of their side would take the "mickey" out of each other - without one ounce of maliciousness. A total credit to their club.

Just a shame they had to poach one player (who is over 24 and does get paid) from another KCL club having already stolen that other clubs best youngster for years (and currently a Kent 2's player).

All the KCL prem clubs pay for (some of their) players to play, and many other Div 1 and 2 teams do too. Some clubs have sugar daddies and some do not. It used to be that even down in Div 5 most sides had a (paid for) overseas, although that is not the case now. Some clubs even had a second overseas player in their reserve side!

The next level down (KRCL), you have Chris Lewis playing for Roebucks this season, and I know he is not doing that for free despite his age!
  • were you playing Hull, Boro or Watford ?
  • After my 'heroics' on Saturday I went back to my old club to play for their Sunday friendly side in Swanscombe. It was marginally less heroic. Their opening medium-pacer ripped through our side. I came in at 5, played some thoroughly decent forward-defensives, then got a full toss down leg which I whipped off the middle of the bat literally straight to the fat kid hidden at short fine leg. One foot up, down, left or right and it'd have been a drop or four runs but the little bastard held it, completing my third duck in a row. The rest of our batsmen got out like idiots (including our star player stumped off a fast bowler with the keeper standing back) and we got rinsed. Then we played a ten-over game afterwards and got rinsed in that too.

What was he "hidden" by? Was there a dirty great big oak tree on the pitch?

Presumably you got some runs in the "beer match" 'cos if you didn't I'm going to start to wonder at what point it might be an idea to get someone from the Guinness Book of Records down to one of your games.

Hang about, Cocaine Chris is playing for Roebucks? Fucking hell they really are flashing their cash about (relatively speaking). Their ground is beautiful but tbh I'm glad we're not playing them this year. Their 2s elected not to take up KRCL on the offer to go up from our division, to win the league "properly" last year, and just dicked on everyone. How is that in the spirit of the game?

I don't get why clubs like Hartley/Blackheath etc feel the total need to buy the KCL. It's a little dispiriting.

I got 1 in the beer match! When I came in we needed about 20 an over so I basically tried to hit everything very very far, and skied one

You know what I mean by 'hidden'! When someone can't field, stick 'em at short fine or slip or something. (Short midwicket is usually a better bet tbh)
  • I had an odd one on Saturday. I made 76 out of 100.
  • Couldn't play on Saturday, only yesterday.

We put on 275 in 35 overs and knocked them over for 29...

    A real nail biter.

Our 3rd XI this season has played thrice and lost thrice:

Game 1: 122 run loss, despite only losing two wickets in their reply

Game 2: Chasing 223, all out for 33

Game 3: 88 all out, oppo complete a 5-wicket win

    --------

I mean, I could be wrong, but I think they need to improve their batting; bowling; and fielding.

Hah. Bowled a bloke when the ball turned for the only time in the game.

Star men were Leuth and Ash though, with figures of 9-2-23-2 and 7-2-14-2 respectively. (Also, Ash Jr with a useful 3-0-12-2. The ploy of having a "small boy" to flummox the opposition is an age-old, ever effective trick!)
  • Turned for the only time? Speak for yourself haha

Just remembered how our beer match yesterday ended. Fat kid was brought on to bowl horrible slow loopy stuff at his own dad, who'd been loaned to us. Last ball of a calamitous day's cricket is a head-high full-toss, which for reasons of speed and trajectory passes the dad's swing and falls onto the top of the stumps. Scoring on the sidelines, my instinct is that it's probably time to take up crown green bowls

At this point I can only see the Roebucks as an extravagant front for Masonic activity, although the precise nature of this I cannot gauge. Maybe they're trying to populate Kidbrooke Village with disgraced former cricketers?

Perhaps a lesson there then - just because a kid is fat doesn't mean that he or she can't field. He might even be the specialist "leg trap" fielder and you fell for it hook, line and sinker - well possibly hook anyway.
