  • @Addick Addict match thread has also been called off......I have a cold!!!

Why are you pestering Addick Addict?
    PS Get well soon.
  • Just a guess, but imagine if there had been exactly the same weather conditions at the end of last week - and with the decent sized crowd expected v Millwall - somehow the pitch would still have been perfectly playable come Saturday morning.

When I was at the ticket office last Saturday, I saw them wheeling back a very large set of heat lamps.
They went down HSS, but @Cardinal Sin has hired em all to warm the church up

    It did cross my mind!

Two good videos on YouTube now explaining the decision and all the precautions taken. The groundsman explaining why the undersoil pipes are there but no bolier (as not a requiremnent outside the premier league). The referee explaining how the pitch is solid in parts and unplayable. The conspiracy lovers will still find a reason to doubt.

    Hmmm.

Sounds to me like they're desperate to justify their actions....or rather NON actions.

Called it yesterday that it would be called off. A mixture of no boilers, many injuries and cold weather was always going to be a factor in no game occurring.

The Football League normally want these games rearranged as quickly as possible so it could be arranged for Tuesday week (31st Jan) or the 21st Feb.

With Rochdale and Oldham away in February on Tuesday nights, there is no guarantee those will take place that month, which could lead to a backlog of fixtures and us playing twice a week for a while.

Anyone remember New Years Day 2003 when West Ham pleaded with the ref to call of the fixture due a mixture of poor weather, poor form and injuries. It bit them on the arse 3 weeks later when we beat them.

Let's hope Karma does not strike on us when we play Scunthorpe in the rearranged game.

Shirty - we weren't exactly hot favourites today and we knew it!

What misconceptions can there be? It says it in the official site.

Surely you can't mean that we're being economical with the truth !!!!!

Are either Ebbslfleet, Dartford or Welling at home today and has their games been called off?

Ebbsfleet, Blackheath RFC, Dagenham and Redbridge and East Thurrock are all playing.
    Dagenham and Redbridge OFF

Anyone able to get any weather readings of last Saturday lunchtime compared to now?

Just been out for a paper, sunny, + temperatures and doesn't even feel that cold

Comparing Hextable with The Valley is problematic but the latter is likely to be warmer.

    Hextable readings for Saturday 14th: Midday Air 3.8, Grass 3.3, 4:30pm 2.4/-1.1
    Today at Midday: 4.5 1.1

Last nights mins were -5.9/-7.2 as compared to early hours of 14th -0.4/-3.9 which is probably the reason for cancellation. Don't forget mins are at about 8am !
  • Ffs.... I just got to the valley

To be fair, ebbfleet have a bloody good groundsman. No way their game would be off

The club operates as a law unto themselves. No regard for the fans of both clubs, Scunthorpe FC, and the football league. They knew the weather forecast and appear not to have made the effort to get the game on because it suited them not to. They had the means to heat the pitch but chose not to. Be surprised if Scunthorpe dont make a complaint.

Agree. The very least Meire & Keohane should have done was to get the Doncaster players down with some hot water bottles for the pitch......

    Doncaster?
  • Misconceptions?
Fans were totally unreasonable to believe the much trumpeted new pitch with all the undersoil pipework would be used by hiring in and connecting up a boiler for events like this.
Fans totally unreasonable and they should have known that a boiler can only be used in the Premier League.
We are over reacting as usual because 50 actors are stirring up trouble and we believe them like the sheep we are.
    How very dare us.

Yep. Remember them trying to get a waterlogged pitch playable when they were 3-0 up at the Valley? Bloody good groundsmen. Shit footballers

  • Look, football is full of cheating - look at Millwall last week - look at the way big clubs nick players - I don't think not busting a gut to get a game on when you have an injury crisis is a big deal in that context.

    It is utter cowardice. #Notinmyname
  • Cold air sinks so Valley bottoms are always colder, especially somewhere shaded.

Hold on. Please tell me that this is not true. Surely if the club went to all the trouble and expense of installing undersoil heating then they would have installed a boiler? I am ready to believe most of what is said about the incompetence of our CEO but this seems to be unlikely? Isn't the inspection on days like usually about the stands and surrounds to see if they are safe for spectators?

It is true. The under pitch pipework went in but it's not connected to anything.
Surely the work of laying all the piping is the most costly/hassle part ?
Like the alleged £15M spent at Sparrows Lane - Roly's people say the investment has been made but there's nothing to show for it. "Are there pipes under the pitch?" "Yes guv, and here's your invoice."
Temperature got all the way down to minus 5 and the covers are good for minus 4, hmmm
If I was on my way down from Scunny, or part of the iron's matchday troop, I'd be very sceptical about this and not a little browned off.
On the one hand; KR won't be too upset, what with the paucity of the squad, but he loses some leverage with the president if he's still after extra bodies, cos today we've dodged a hiding from the league's 2nd best side. What are the chances he had a quiet word with Nathan Chapman's team suggesting they didn't have to bust a gut to get the game on?
Roly loses an extra slice of €uros with the abandonment costs, so not all bad.
Given our parsimonious president's grasp of football management in general he's probably imposed an overtime ban on the groundsmen cos he thinks it'd save him a few cents.
Just another, relatively minor, blunder in an ever lengthening litany of lunacy and mismanagement by this ridiculous regime.
    Keep smilin'
  • On the plus side, Palace are currently in the drop zone.
  • More underhand than undersoil.
  • Does anybody actually know the cost of hiring in, hooking up, and running a mobile boiler?
I watched Nathan in the video, and I thought the question to him about the undersoil heating, leading with 'misconceptions', was a clumsy and unconvincing part of the video.
On this specific issue I really can't see an excuse for not getting the pitch ready, I know it is possibly handy getting the game called off football wise, but presumably if we were in the Prem we would've got the equipment in and got the match on, by that I mean it can physically be done although there are costs attached.
