  • Very sad to hear that - RIP
  • Rotten news, a key part of a very good team.
A very solid centre half in more ways than one.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Great idea from @_MrDick for spontaneous round of applause in 5th minute. Wish I could be there to put my hands together in appreciation of the player and the memories.
  • I think I saw him play against us but not for us. I started going in 1975 and regularly 1977. But I know he was much talked about and respected after he left. R.I.P.
  • This is such sad news.

Saw my first Charlton game in 1968. It was that team that turned me into a Charlton fan. (They have a lot to answer for!)

To this day, that team remains one of my all time favourites and it is so sad that so many members of it have died so recently at such a young age.

    RIP.

  • RIP .

Never saw him play for Charlton but certainly did see him towards the end of his career with Cardiff and Orient .
  • Very sad to hear this. He was in the very first team I watched. A few others have passed recently too. Another bad day.

    R.I.P. Paul.

RIP Paul. Remember him fondly, tasty solid centre half, had thighs like tree trunks and when he headed a ball it stayed headed! Doubt he ever lost a shoulder to shoulder charge, very sad no age at all these days,
  • Very sad He was one of my first Charlton hero's and his partnership with Reeves was unbelievably good.
The biggest thighs i have ever seen on a footballer he really was a man mountain.
RIP, and thanks for the memories
  • Lots of good memories

    RIP Paul

  • As many others have said he was in the first Charlton team I saw. I used to stand at the front of what used to be the south terrace and although it was a long time ago and I was only 6 sure I remember him receiving treatment in front of me then running back onto the pitch covered in blood against Middleborough.
    RIP Paul.

RIP.......Big man. A very very good centre half, they don't make em like that anymore. Loved watching him and 'that team!'
  • Gutted when I've just seen this, RIP Paul I remember him very well and thought he was a great servant of the club. Condolences to his family and friends. God Bless Paul.
  • Funnily enough, I found an old autograph book that my dad gave me as a kid. I think he knew a scout there and he got the squads signatures (including Paul's)

  • Paul's is on the right of the blue page below

  • Sad News... RIP Paul Went. One of the Greats

That 1968 / 69 team have always been my yardstick for judging Charlton teams. I remember he played alongside Peter Reeves for the England Youth team and then played alongside him when he joined Charlton. They were a great pairing. So sad to have lost so many of that great team. But they will all live forever in my memory.
  • Great defender alongside Bob Curtis and Brian Kinsey. My first Charlton games all those years ago. RIP big fella.
  • So sad to hear this. One of my fondest childhood memories is sitting in his living room with my dad and Paul's wife. We were taken there by his lovely parents who lived opposite Paul in Ilford. His parents had visited our house as potential buyers and saw Paul's picture on my bedroom wall. Terrific powerful, dominant Centre Half in the George Costa mould. Not fast, but not much got past him.
RIP Paul and thanks for the memories.
  • Met Paul a few times years ago when he was a brewery rep and I was on the committee at the liberal club, nice guy, very sad RIP Paul

  • Aah, what a bummer.
A colossus and a great player.
    RIP Paul
  • I remember reading about him when he was a wonderkid at Orient. I was gobsmacked when we signed him. i didn't think we were a big enough club. But it was a time of rare ambition.

    RIP Paul
  • What a player - What an example --- I was just growing up and he was one of the reasons I used to stand on the Old East Terrace every other Saturday with my Dad - very sad news indeed - I do recall seeing him fairly recently on the pitch @ the Valley too. May he Rest In Peace and my condolences to his Family and Friends. Thanks again for those memories.
  • One of my first Charlton heroes along with Bob Curtis - both no longer with us.
    Very sad - RIP Paul.

  • Spoke to Paul in the lounge at Orients ground a couple of seasons back, really nice guy who had a soft spot for Charlton.

A decent CH for us overall.

    RIP
  • RIP Paul. Great player. Came to us from Leyton Orient if I remember correctly.
  • Very sad, another of my child-hood Charlton heroes gone. RIP
  • Remembering Paul's commanding performances at centre-half for the addicks a great and consistent servant for the club.
    Happy memories!!
    R.I.P big man.
  • Terrific player. RIP

Loved thunder thighs and remember him scoring one of the best own goals ever. RIP Paul.

Would have been one from almost the halfway line as an intended backpass. Dad spoke of one such own goal that was insane.
