Went to see Heilung at Brixton Academy last night. Most bizarrely, wonderfully surreal experience. Felt more like being at an ancient ritual than a concert.
Brilliant stuff, @NorthStandDan. I’ve never heard of them but watched a few minutes on YouTube and was mesmerised. What inspired you to see them?

They mentioned that when I saw them on Saturday. I can't make this year but to be honest, the organisation at the venue was awful last year. Might be ok when just one stage/area being used but the crushes when bands finished and the queues at the bar (I gave up in the end) aren't inspiring me to rush back.

Shame you can't make it Russ. Bringing a couple of mates along this time.

A mate saw them at the ArcTanGent festival a few years ago and raved about. Took the chance to check them out when I saw they were playing London.

It was a totally mesmerising night. Crazy audience as well; every one from black metal kids in corpse paint, through to hippies, hipsters, vikings and everything in between!

Security were confiscating Viking helmets, antlers and mead horns on the doors…

Gallus at the George Tavern on Commercial Road this evening. Crowd of about 100. They've not really made a name for themselves outside of Scotland yet.

Great show and really genuine blokes who obviously love what they do.

Any indie rock fans should check out their album "We Don't Like The People We've Become"

What's it like in the George?
I drive past it all the time and always fancied a night in there

A bunch of concerts coming up thick and fast - mostly metal mayhem but not all.

Spiritbox last Sunday were excellent. Second time I’ve seen them, really good live.

This Saturday it’s Machine Head, In Flames, Lacuna Coil and Unearth. Really just going for Lacuna Coil although I’ll stick around for Machine Head.

Sunday it’s Melissa Etheridge who I’ve followed since her debut album, and Joss Stone.

The following week it three in three days - Thursday, The Birthday Massacre, Friday, Trivium and Bulletin for my Valentine, finishing up with Arch Enemy on Saturday.

The earplugs will be getting a proper workout, just in case my audiologist is reading this.

The simply wonderful Eddie Reader at Union Chapel last night. She still has the most amazing voice, even if a little off the top end.

Cristina Scabbia at the House of Blues, Boston. Amazing voice, still hitting the top end.

Saw Aussie band Redhook with my daughter on Friday. New venue for me - The Lower Third on Denmark St - small and hot but excellent sound.

Band were pretty good (daughters choice) evening was definitely enhanced by the lead singer who was very easy on the eye! Nice close up when she sung a number on the bar.

Saw the flaming lips at brixton academy last night. Last saw them at Hammersmith many years ago, lots of stage action and a fancy light show but some of the album tracks definitely not beat suited for live performance.

Brixton a real nightmare to get into now, had to queue round the building due to the one ticket on one device policy, sucked a bit of joy from the event.

  • Richard Dawson at the Clapham Grand last night. Tremendous performance. He seems like a lovely bloke too. He was genuinely moved by the reception he received.

I saw Mark Eitzel at The Moth Club in Hackney last night. Some of the pre-show blurb referred to his songs as witty with dour lyrics. It pretty much sums him up, too, as he has a penchant for self-deprecating humour. "This song is more or less the same as the last one", he told us. He played solo for half the set and with a band for the second half; I preferred the second half. It wasn't a mesmerising show, but there was something quirky and fascinating about it, which made it an enjoyable performance from a likeable man.

Indoor Pets and The Hubbards at Colours in Hoxton is next for me. Saw the Hubbard there last year and it’s a nice venue.

    The Pogues at Brixton.
I think there were about 20+ of them.
    8 seperate singers I think.
They were better than last time I saw them 13 years ago, when Shane was helped on and off stage about 5 times.
    Better than expected 9/10 recommended.
