And, of course, real ales. My local Lidl has fantastic deals on some of my favourite bottled ales.

The missus and I can often do a weekly shop for around £20-30 in Lidl.

    That's just the ales.

It's a lot cheaper at Waitrose as their security is poor.

    Overheard at Waitrose:

"Darling, can you see where Basil and Rosemary are?"
"Aren't the herbs on aisle seven?"
"No sweetheart I'm trying to find our children!"
In my experience your just as likely to hear someone screaming at Caleb to get his fuckin ass over here since they started handing out free coffee.
Apparently getting rid of free coffee as one of their top people thinks that it attracts the wrong sort, people who buy cigs and lottery tickets
If that's true Caleb and I will be shopping at Asda in future.

I'd shop at Lidl all the time but they fail to cater to my veggie needs (yes, how unreasonable I hear you say) so I get what I can there and then get the rest at Morrisons. Definitely save money that way instead of doing it all at Mozzas.

A Morrisons regular, and to be honest I can't see how Aldi / Lidl would work out cheaper for me as there are very few things I buy regularly that are not on offer

Choices for supermarkets in Rochester & Strood is not as wide as in some other places. Was spoiled for choice in the Bromley area. We use Ocado for our main shop and top up at either Morrisons, Asda or Aldi. I occasionally make a foray over to the Waitrose at Allington Park.

I started my working life at my local Waitrose, which is the one on Burnt Ash Lane, and I have a degree of loyalty to that brand - and am a little biased in liking the quality over most of the other chains. It is fair to say that they can be more expensive than other supermarkets - but not excessively so. A lot of the basics are fairly competitive in price providing that you're not comparing the super-cheap tertiary branded stuff like baked beans at 15p a tin (or whatever it may be). And they stock a lot of the specialist ingredients if you like to get creative in the kitchen.

Personally I find Morrisons comes out in second place, then Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco in that order. I find the quality of the food in Aldi is superb but that they don't stock a huge number of lines. Queues in Aldi are also a bit of a nightmare as their staffing complement is kept to a minimum...

Have been shopping in Aldi for over a year now and manage to save up to about 40% on what we used to spend.

The fresh produce is as good as you'll get elsewhere, and invariably better in a lot of cases.

You can also pick up a pair of hiking boots, a countersink bit set, a set of reflective badges for your bike and a 5 man tent.

I can normally get around Lidl in a bit less than 10 minutes, over a year in Aldi seems a bit odd...
The bargains just keep on coming.

You also spend less than 30 seconds at the checkout as all their staff take a course in Formula One Speed Checkout Skills.

    Congrats on your retirement!

Whilst not everything is cheaper in Lidl & Aldi I reckon 95% of it is so it's well worth doing. Two things to be mindful of though:
    - They don't accept credit cards, so you have to stay in budget.
    - The have an annoying habit of displaying their prices above the goods rather than underneath them which is traditional here. So you have to be careful when doing your price checks.

    Aldi do these days

Have a weekly delivery from Tescos as the main shop, and get top ups and odds and sods from Aldi.

now you've retired, hopefully with a nice NHS pension, you'll have lots of time to go shopping and to explore the jungle that is UK retailing

.. personally I like M&S, good quality, imaginative recipes, nice packaging and, though pricey, good v f m, unlike Waitrose in my opinion
... Morrison, Aldi, Lidl are all good for staples but the latter two have a limited selection of usually unfamiliar brands, generally OK though .. the German stores often have unusual products, watch out for the sell/use by dates in Aldi and Lidl ....
.. Tesco has the best selection of 'stuff' and the quality is decent, explore the different price ranges from 'basic' to 'Tesco Finest' ..
Sainsbury is decent quality but overpriced .. ASDA is ok, somewhere between Morrison and Tesco though my lady friend calls our local ASDA superstore 'chav central' (she can be a bit of a snob at times lol) ...

also, have a butchers around your local Ann Summers, very good stimulation for the old imagination and the errrrrrr physical awareness

    Good hunting (and gathering) ((:>)

Reliably informed the meat in Aldi and Lidl is exactly the same as the bigger (more expensive) boys.

Also informed by a "wine athlete" that some of the wines in Lidl are phenomenal. Proper top notch stuff.

Personally we do a weekly in Tesco as it's near home. Daily pickups from Waitrose (near wifey's office) or M&S at the petrol station where we live as it's on the way.

Avoid Asda like the plague for fruit as it tends to go off by the time you get home

We went from Sainsbury's to Aldi about 2 years ago, and the shops are £30 a week cheaper, and really do a full shop for over £50.

I guess that Nico Rosberg is in the same situation as you.

    Overheard in Waitrose.

" I shop here because most people on my estate do. Even the gamekeeper ".

Lidl over here has better quality and cheaper veg than the big 2 (Continente and Pingo Doce), but not such a good variety. Stuff like cling film and bin bags are much cheaper and far better quality in Lidl too.

Apolonia is great value for money as well

we will do an online shop once every 2/3 weeks with Tesco and then in between shop in Lidl weekly, did our normal huge shop in there once and whilst it's a nightmare at the tills etc, I reckon we saved circa 30%. Trouble is they don't have everything so we still ended up in Tesco for other bits.

Every time I go in Lidl I walk out having bought something really random that I don't need.

If you want to save a few quid Mysupermarket.com is good site for comparing specific branded products at different supermarkets.

I use this site to find cheapest whisky prices.

When I was over last month I took my mum to waitrose as that is where I shop in Dubai. She had never been. Funny thing is half the things I wanted to buy don't seem to be sold in the waitrose in the U.K.. so it was a wasted journey.

Aldi & Lidl just do not work for me as can only ever get halve the things on my list .... too busy to pop somewhere else for the rest so convenience of Tesco over cost I am afraid.

We use Tesco ...great selection and always lots of deals.

Don't like Morrisons much although they have a good bakery counter.

Asda is a mess, never use it any more.

Lidl's always has a lot of good fish/shellfish at Xmas time.

    Never tried Aldi.

Have used Ocado a few times and always very good quality.

I live in Norfolk. Almost everything is Norwich dominated - so Aldi and Lidl are there. Unfortunately I live roughly 30 minutes drive away.

Our nearest Tesco and Morrisons are in Beccles which is 10 Minutes drive. Sainsbury is south of Norwich so about 20 mins away.

We therefore tend to do Tesco's - don't like Morrisons. I detest Asda - I wouldn't shop there if it was next door.

When I have shopped at Aldi and Lidl I have been pretty impressed. Their business models are far superior to the behemoth stock sized "big four". As for Coop. We have a local one in our village. It's decent for topping up stuff but very expensive for many things.

    What about Roys of Wroxham?

Can people really do their weekly shop in Aldi/Lidl? You get some great stuff in there and can certainly save money, but I wouldn't have thought it possible to get EVERYTHING in there.

There's a Lidl in Farnham but locals don't use it because of the risk of being caught in there by your neighbour. True.

Sevenoaks residents fought for years to stop Lidl opening in the High Street.

    Very popular now.

Haven't seen you in there yet? Are you still in 7oaks area? I thought you moved away a bit?
