If you are looking for a pair of trousers Johnny, ask to have your inside leg measurement checked
  • I only remember 4 cinemas in Woolwich that were opened at the same time.
Granada, Odeon, Century in Beresford Square, and the Regal which has just been pulled down.
Plumstead had 3 cinemas at one time, Century, Plaza and the Savoy on Plumstead Common
  • Woolwich was dead in my eyes the day they cut the 696 and 698 Trolleybuses.

I was there first day it opened as well 'Dedicated to the people of Woolwich' - is the plaque still there?

    - Lord John clothes shop
    - Best fish and chip shop in Spray Street
    - Woolwich Poly of course - The Union was the pub of choice for the sixth form!!
    - 98 shoe shops (well it seemed like it)
    - Used to buy my old mum Coty L'aimont every Christmas from Cuffs
    - Traffic in Powis Steet
    - Biggest Sainsbury's in the country when it opened (used to have a Saturday job there)
    - Royal Artillery at Home every summer on the common
    - Shoe shop next to the Covered Market where I bought my first pair of Squires Brogues.

So many happy memories. But it has changed a bit from the 60s/70s to now!

Now now, Robert - not the right approach for a wannabe peoples' moderator!

    LEWIS COACHES......

Wasn't there one in Plumstead as well? Pretty sure my Dad and Grandad used to book up for us there.
  • I too visited McDonalds in Woolwich the day it opened with vouchers. Also worked there on the odd occasion when they were short staffed and I was sent in a taxi from Eltham.

Had a quick chat with me mother.
Bearing in mind she is in her late 80's and memory isn't what it was.
She is fairly sure she remembers 5 cinemas - the 3 that were still operating when I was a lad; Odeon, Granada, Regal (ABC).
She said there was also one in Powis Street near corner of Hare Street that was bombed out in the War. She doesn't remember the name.
The fifth was in New Road along from where the Tramshed is and opposite the Post Office. She doesn't remember its proper name, but says it was known locally as the "Bug Hutch"
  • Blah blah blah. The blacks and the hipsters are here now. Deal with it. ;)

Come on now Leuth, relax your sphincter for a minute.

Actually, I remember buying a pair of Hipsters from Harry Fenton in the 60's/70's.
