Went on the Junior reds coach to this, remember we were made to sit in the stand on the side. Was quite funny seeing all the Charlton fans getting wet. Gotta love that away kit though.
Good to see that video, brought back great memories of one of my favourite ever Charlton sides. Presumably this was one of Ilic's long run of successive clean sheets leading up to Wembley.
It contained two very bizarre incidents though, possibly unique: - Danny Mills' slide-tackle leading with his upper body (clear penalty) - probably not a recommended technique - The ref head-butting a Swindon player (clear sending off - oh, hang on...)
I don't think anything will top Yeovil. Remember going for a piss under the stand (where the toilets were) and there being people sheltering, not even watching the game. Almost left at the h/t whistle to find a pub as said to my mate theres no way there'll come back out for the second half. Think we were also 1-0 down and with 10 men. So glad I stayed, was a great second half, remember Bailey kept trying to score from corners and their keeper nearly scoring an og when his clearance blew back over his head and went for a corner. Anyway, back to Swindon, wasn't there, first trip was late '99, think we won 2-1 the year we went up as champions.
A very young Michael Carrick scored for Swindon that night and looked a class above.
Oddly, though, I seem to recall it snowing rather than raining ! But Mr F confirmed the latter.
West Brom in the Cup ( standing in covered area behind a goal?) when the ball stuck in the mud and in the league, standing on the uncovered terrace corner - ah, those were the days.
For the league match , I was wearing a very fetching duck egg blue wool jacket which had to be binned the following day as it had stretched out of all proportion !

Newcastle away in the early 80's was one of the wettest away days, met by police at Newcastle rail station & escorted to the ground at about 13.00 stood on open terracing to watch us lose to 2 Kevin Keegan goals, the game was one of the featured games on'Match of the day'.It did not stop raining for the whole time in the ground & was still soaked through by the time i reached home at about 22.30.
Yep...exactly the same experience as you;
Up to the ground in the vans....stood in the rain for at least an hour before ko.....1-0 up (Paul Curtis)....Ryan Paris, Dolce Vita on the H-T tannoy (don't know why but I remember that) ....lost 2-1....detonators going off in the home end after the goals...kept in the ground in the rain after the game....watching the blokes take the nets down....just home to watch it on Match of The Day.....still wet!
It's on youtube that one and you can see all 35 of us huddled to the left side of the goal. That was the Saturday following the 7-0 bashing at Brighton.
Pigging stewards tried to insist on us sitting down for most of the first half too, they gave in by the 2nd half. Part of the 10 game unbeaten run to the playoffs. Funny how we all forget how fortunate we were to win, on another day ref could have given the home side 2 penalties and not lay out one of their players. Tom Morris caught my party and me sat huddled against the deluge, looking like we were considering a fate worse then death rather than enjoying ourselves at a football match. His photo made the end of season "memorable images" collection and he was decent enough to send me a couple of copies when I spotted that we'd been immortalised in celluloid. Friends who attended that one and Yeovil 2010 assure me that Yeovil was worse but Swindon 98 is the wettest I've ever been with that many clothes on.
I was one of the very few Charlton fans in the covered seats. I knew people getting drenched on the terrace were trying to bribe stewards into letting them into the stand but the stewards were having none of it. Rubbed it in by taking my coat and jumper off and gesturing to my friends on the terrace. God was obviously watching me because he made me experience Yeovil, which made Swindon seem like a condensation drip.
Also Villa away when their ground was being redeveloped. The weather was so bad my vegetarian Daughter almost had a Bovril at half time. We lost 3-1 and I recall Dion Dublin headed a brilliant goal - for us.
What a season that was! Imagine getting 88 points and not going straight up yet still having the guts to win the playoffs.
Can remember getting turned over at Stockport, I think in Feb, had you said then that we were going up, I would have been looking for the men in white coats.

Tee total in those days mate?
I would have thought you'd have slipped the escort otherwise!

Getting a corner directly from an opposing Goal Kick without the ball touching anyone says it all

Felt like REAL football.

I took my jeans off on my way home so I was sitting on the train in just my boxers. People must of loved that.
