Sorry if there is a past thread for this. Away at Swindon in 1990 something (what year was it?)...absolute pissing down with rain...arguably the best Charlton away day I ever had. Happy days.
Glad you think so. I thought it was a bloody nightmare & it's due to pee down on Saturday. Hopefully, our end is covered & not behind the uncovered goal.
That was the play-off final season, 97/98. 1-0 to us, think Steve Jones was the scorer. Remember driving along the motorway on my way to the game, not too far from Swindon. Road was fairly empty but it was pissing down so hard that nobody was doing more than 30mph cos the visibility was so poor.
Don't normally drive to games, but glad I did that day - got back in the car after the match, peeled off my rain-soaked jeans and drove home in my pants with the heater on max.
So many good away days during those years that I'd totally forgot about this one. Quite undeserved if I remember but great celebrations when Steve Jones scored right in front of us.
Windy as too, the rain was coming in horizontal. My old man's flat cap got blew of and the wind just pinned it up against the railings at the back, about 5' off the ground, until he'd climbed over about 6 rows of seats to retrieve it. It never hit the ground.
Wasn't at Yeovil but the only other day that got close was West Brom away in about 94.
1998, it was the same seated stand behind the goal that are there now. I remember a Charlton flag in the dry area that we're in on Saturday with the fans waving at us as we were getting drenched! The rain at Yoevil '10 was far worse. Great celebrations when Steve Jones scored and I enjoyed the palace reject chants to George Ndah!
I don't think anything will top Yeovil. Remember going for a piss under the stand (where the toilets were) and there being people sheltering, not even watching the game. Almost left at the h/t whistle to find a pub as said to my mate theres no way there'll come back out for the second half. Think we were also 1-0 down and with 10 men. So glad I stayed, was a great second half, remember Bailey kept trying to score from corners and their keeper nearly scoring an og when his clearance blew back over his head and went for a corner. Anyway, back to Swindon, wasn't there, first trip was late '99, think we won 2-1 the year we went up as champions.
I always have bad memories of Swindon. I was there for a terrible 5-0 defeat. What made it worse was that the fact that it was the main match on Match of the Day when Div 2 games were a rarity on TV.
Portsmouth was bad one year when we were all so wet, people were wringing their coats and tops out but, I agree, Yeovil was the worst I have ever experienced.
Pretty sure I've seen us win seven times at Swindon (including the Steve Jones rain game).
Trying to remember them now...
2-1...night game; Webster pile driver. 3-1....league cup; great chip by Whyte but lost 2nd leg and went out! 1-0....windy; Grant far end. 2-1....Robinson and Newton 1-0....rain; Jones 3-0.....league cup; lots of new signings played like Mouta and McCleod 3-0.....Benson and Anyinsah
Plus quite a few draws and one defeat (Wayne Allson)
Portsmouth 81 promotion season was chucking it down all night.
The away end in those days was an open terrace. First time I got a real soaking at football.
Then there was Yeovil.
You could seethe torrential rain coming to us in waves as the heavy rain just gave us a tester. It was horizontal. Everything got soaked through, regardless of how many layers you had on.
As Drewman said, their keeper took a goal kick and the ball blew back to us to go out for a corner.
How the ref never abandoned the game I'll never know.
Weren't they handing out little plastic ponchos? It was a truly biblical downpour...
From my memory it was more a case of them trying to sell them to us at half-time, when we were all already drenched. I remember still being soaked when I reached home that evening.
Newcastle away in the early 80's was one of the wettest away days, met by police at Newcastle rail station & escorted to the ground at about 13.00 stood on open terracing to watch us lose to 2 Kevin Keegan goals, the game was one of the featured games on'Match of the day'.It did not stop raining for the whole time in the ground & was still soaked through by the time i reached home at about 22.30.
I was there with a few mates, one of whom drove us back to London completely naked after removing all of his drenched clothes before he got in the car.
It was alright doing 70 on the motorway but he got some strange looks as we got into London.

I was actually sat in Row AA for that match and the poor Lino slipped over in front of the seated (but soaked in my case) Charlton supporters. Happy days!

We lost 1-0 but I think she realised that day I was a keeper.
