'Sponsors' Dinner tonight at The Valley

  • I have been to the shirt sponsors event in happier times for the club. I was dreading last night and as GlassHalfFull said earlier the players seemed apprehensive about how they would be approached by us.

I was surprised at how much they wanted to know about how the fans are feeling about the situation at the club. They are as unhappy with the management as we are.

I was surprised at how open they were. Usually players are very circumspect when talking about the club at these sort of events.

Good to hear but can't help but believe that most of these players know that they won't be at the club next season.
  • Well said, Fanny.

And lovely to have met you before the Derby match.

  • BTW ....... Fanny, very impressed with the hard work you were putting in to collect POTY votes.

    Thank you.

I don't agree with the kit-sponsors-dinner, nobody invited me when i sponsored Garth Crooks' socks at s**hurst...

You avoided an evening listening to Garth Crooks. You should be happy!
  • The rule is, that Ex Players tells you more than current Players.

The fact that so many Players yesterday told it like it is; tells you how few of them will be at the Valley next season, as long as their Agents get to work, plus can the players pass a Proper medical.
And last but not least, is any only club interested in players who have struggled in the Championship ?

Being told by a 1st team player, the FIRST WEEK Riga took over, that the difference this time around was we didn't have 4 games in hand and that it was going to be hard to stay up, didn't fill me with confidence.

I think that it is remarkable that so many players were so free with their views.

Difficult to imagine all of them will be on their bikes. They have to be nearly as angry as most fans.

I just wish those who are opposed to the protests would open their minds and read this thread.
  • To be fair, hearing how open the players were last night has made me far more likely to now get a POTY ticket. Would love to hear first hand their experiences and their honest opinions of the situation, which based on last nights event, seem like they will be fairly forthcoming
  • Players are extremely well versed in what to say / what not to say, and the fact what they say will pretty soon go out on social media these days.

It's quite telling they were so open

Maybe they feel that the regime is on its last legs, so that they don't have to be as circumspect as normal...

Or is that wishful thinking on my behalf!

Thanks for the report, Henry. Pretty ghastly mood all round it seems, although it sounds like more fun than I thought it would be.

We were Tony Watt's sponsor this season, then Lookman's, but couldn't face going to be honest. Got drunk in Simpsons and then the Jampot instead.

Old school City drinking...Like!!! Jampot was a great favourite from the late 80s onwards, along with the Red Lion, the other side of Lombard Street. Happy Days
The Jam Pot, AKA the powder room. Happy days in the 80's

One of my favourite City pubs in the 80's ...great place.
We probably shared a white top SM, without even knowing!
    Indeed!
  • I would have thought the players would have welcomed the opportunity to open up last night. They obviously have an affinity with the fans and this was their chance to let everyone know that, basically, they feel the same as us. They're not stupid and they can see what has been going on. What a mess we are in. The sooner this lot are out of our club the better.

I can't believe we have somebody as incompetent as KM as CEO of our club. What a joke.

Don't want to re-open the whole POTY dinner debate but these reports from Henry and others suggest that the players are much more likely than we might have thought to want to engage with fans, even after such a difficult season.

Feel a lot more sympathetic to them after reading the comments on here. I think it would be a shame if the POTY award was hijacked and loads of people voted for Rhys Williams, as has been suggested before. Won't even register with Roland and Katrien, and harsh on the likes of Cousins, Solly, Teixera, Bauer, etc, who have put the effort in during the season and only find themselves part of a side that's been relegated because of what's gone on over there heads.
Good to hear your words, MrLargo and those of a couple of other posters in a similar vein.

The POTY dinner won't be hijacked- of that I'm certain - but it is a sad reflection on the mantra of "Support the team, NOT the regime" when regular attendees decide not to come this time. Forget the money" given" to the club - this is the time to assure our players that we're in this together.

I wish more fans could have met the players last night as I believe opinions would have changed after speaking with them.

This may well be the last opportunity supporters have to speak with some of our favourites & indeed stalwarts that we might have expected to be "one club players" if it wasn't for the antics of the Belgian spoilers.

Tickets for the dinner will be on sale until close of business next Wednesday so there's still time to book your place.

    You know it makes sense.

Oh and at this stage, there is no indication as to whether our CEO will be in attendance, or not....

Which potential 'one club players' are you referring to Fanny ?

  • Why would you want to ship Solly out?! Quite easily our most consistent player for years now. It can only be money orientated. It certainly explains his dip in form around about that time. Very unlike him.

I've been told he is one of the top earners at our club.....

Ah! The bottom line, of course!

Good business sense on one level, but do the Bel ends realise that football is part of the entertainment business rather than just business? They have to offer the customer more than low, low prices (with a nice margin on the side)
